Most subscription downloads require a paid plan, stay inside the app, and need periodic internet revalidation.
The word download is the important qualification. Streaming services usually save an app-controlled copy for offline playback; they do not hand you a transferable MP3 or FLAC file. This guide separates temporary subscription downloads, purchased music, and local-file players, then compares 25 practical choices. The shortlist includes 24 distinct services or players, with SoundCloud Go and SoundCloud Go+ counted separately as plan-level options.
Key takeaways
- Offline listening usually means an app-controlled subscription download, not a transferable MP3 or FLAC file.
- Spotify Premium supports up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices, but Spotify requires an internet connection at least once every 30 days to keep offline downloads active.
- YouTube Music Premium can download songs, videos, and podcasts, and its Android app supports saving downloads to an SD card.
- TIDAL is the strongest fit for lossless, Hi-Res FLAC, and Dolby Atmos listening, but higher-quality downloads consume more storage and require compatible hardware.
- Qobuz and Bandcamp are better choices than ordinary streaming caches when the goal is to purchase downloadable music, while VLC, foobar2000, Poweramp, Musicolet, and AIMP play files you already own.
- Country, device, subscription tier, storage capacity, and app version can change whether a particular download feature is available.
What does “download music” mean in a music app?
“Download” has three different meanings, and choosing the wrong category is the fastest way to end up with music you cannot use as expected.
| Download model | What you receive | What happens if you cancel or change apps? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription offline download | An encrypted or app-controlled copy available inside the streaming service | Access normally depends on an active plan, account authorization, and periodic revalidation; the download is not an ordinary MP3 or FLAC file | Flights, commutes, travel, and listening where mobile data is unavailable |
| Purchased digital download | A music file or album supplied through a music store, subject to that store’s file and licensing terms | The purchase is separate from a streaming cache; back up the files and check the store’s format and transfer rules | Building a permanent library that can potentially be moved between compatible players |
| Local-file playback | Files that you legally own or have legally downloaded and copied to the device | The player does not provide a streaming catalogue; your access depends on keeping the files available | Listeners who already maintain an MP3, FLAC, or other local music library |
Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, TIDAL, SoundCloud, and Anghami should therefore be described as offline-streaming services, not MP3-export tools. Qobuz and Bandcamp need more careful wording because purchased downloads are a separate proposition from content cached inside an app.

What are the 25 best music download apps?
The list below is a practical shortlist rather than an independent measurement of catalogue size or sound quality. The research dossier contains 24 distinct app or service names; SoundCloud Go and SoundCloud Go+ are shown as separate plan choices because both are relevant offline options, producing 25 entries without inventing another service. Rows marked for verification identify services whose current plan terms, geography, or download behavior should be checked immediately before publication or signup.
| # and app | Download model and cost gate | Catalogue strength | Offline scope | Quality and storage | Ownership, platform, or verification note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Spotify | Subscription cache; Premium is required for music downloads | Broad mainstream catalogue, playlists, podcasts, and strong cross-platform support | Albums, playlists, podcasts; individual songs may need to be added to a playlist first | Audio-only downloads are more storage-efficient than video or Hi-Res downloads; quality and storage settings should be chosen in the app | App-controlled rather than transferable files; Premium supports up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices and requires reconnection at least every 30 days |
| 2. Apple Music | Subscription download model; verify the current plan requirement | Strong Apple-device integration and library management | Offline workflow and supported devices should be checked against the current app version | Lossless support is a key comparison point; higher-quality downloads use more storage | Best considered by readers already using Apple devices; verify current regional terms and offline reliability |
| 3. YouTube Music | Premium subscription download model | Official music videos, remixes, covers, live recordings, podcasts, and automatic mixes | Songs, videos, and podcasts on mobile; Smart Downloads can automatically select recently played music | Video and high-quality downloads can use substantially more space than audio-only downloads; Android supports SD-card storage | App-controlled downloads generally require reconnection at least every 30 days; Google says Smart Downloads can select up to 200 recently played songs |
| 4. TIDAL | Paid subscription with offline listening | Mainstream and specialist catalogue with a strong sound-quality focus | Albums, videos, shows, and playlists on supported mobile devices and tablets | Lossless, Hi-Res FLAC, and Dolby Atmos options; high-quality downloads require more storage and compatible hardware | Offline playback remains service-controlled; do not assume every track, device, or output supports every format |
| 5. Qobuz | Subscription offline playback plus a separate music-download store | High-resolution listening and downloadable albums | Downloaded content can be played without an internet connection inside Qobuz applications | High-resolution files require more storage than standard-quality audio; verify the format for each purchase | Keep app downloads and purchased files separate in the explanation; purchasing a file is not the same as caching a stream |
| 6. Amazon Music Unlimited | Paid subscription download model; verify current plan names and rules | Large mainstream catalogue and Amazon, Alexa, Fire TV, and device integration | Songs and playlists for offline listening | Storage depends on selected quality and the size of the downloaded library | App-controlled downloads; Amazon Music Unlimited’s catalogue claim and current plan terms should be refreshed before publication |
| 7. SoundCloud Go+ | Paid subscription plan with offline playback | Major-label and independent material, DJ sets, demos, remixes, and creator uploads | Offline playback for content available under the plan | Quality, catalogue access, and storage behavior vary by content and territory | Downloads remain tied to the service; catalogue access varies by country |
| 8. SoundCloud Go | Paid subscription plan with offline playback | Creator-uploaded tracks, independent music, and discovery-oriented listening | Offline playback is listed for the Go plan, subject to current plan and territory rules | Verify current quality options and download limits | Go and Go+ are plans of the SoundCloud service rather than separate applications; access is app-bound and region-dependent |
| 9. Deezer | Subscription service; verify which current tier enables offline music | Conventional mainstream streaming catalogue | Verify current offline availability, device limits, and supported content types | Verify current audio-quality options and download-quality controls | Check United States catalogue coverage, plan terms, and app-version behavior immediately before publication |
| 10. Anghami Plus | Plus subscription download model | Arabic and MENA-focused music alongside international music | Songs, podcasts, albums, and playlists for offline playback | Verify current quality settings and storage controls | Availability and features vary by country; downloaded content should be treated as app-controlled |
| 11. Pandora Premium | Paid radio and streaming service; verify the current offline tier | Radio-first listening, stations, and personalized discovery | Verify whether current downloads are playlist-based, prediction-based, or on-demand | Verify current quality and storage behavior | Better for personalized radio than for a permanent download library |
| 12. Audiomack | Download-oriented service; free and paid download rules require verification | Hip-hop, mixtapes, and emerging artists | Verify which tracks download without payment and whether downloads are app-bound | Quality and regional licensing can affect the available catalogue and storage use | Useful for discovery, but do not promise free or transferable downloads without a current check |
| 13. Napster | Conventional subscription streaming option; verify current United States plans | Mainstream streaming catalogue | Verify offline limits and supported platforms | Verify current audio-quality options | App-controlled access; current competitiveness and plan details are volatile |
| 14. iHeartRadio | Radio, podcast, and personalized-station service; verify paid offline features | Broadcast radio, podcasts, and personalized stations | Verify which content can be saved for offline listening under current paid plans | Not primarily a direct music-download store; storage depends on the content type | Choose it for radio and podcasts rather than a conventional on-demand music library |
| 15. Boomplay | Regional streaming service; verify current plan and download support | African music and regional catalogues | Verify supported countries, offline behavior, and device coverage | Verify current quality and storage controls | Availability is geography-dependent, so avoid broad worldwide claims |
| 16. JioSaavn | Pro-plan offline model; verify current plan requirement | South Asian music | Verify current Pro downloads and whether saved content stays inside the app | Verify quality settings and storage behavior | Country availability is material to the recommendation |
| 17. KKBOX | Subscription download model; verify current tier | East Asian music markets | Verify offline-download support and supported territories | Verify current audio-quality options | Regional availability and plan requirements should be checked before signup |
| 18. JOOX | Regional streaming service; verify current download features | Music in markets where JOOX operates | Verify offline scope and content eligibility | Verify quality settings and storage controls | Do not generalize availability beyond operating territories |
| 19. IDAGIO | Specialist classical subscription option; verify current offline plan | Classical catalogue, with composer, work, and performer search as important decision factors | Verify current offline support and content limits | Compare recording quality and metadata usefulness rather than relying only on bit-rate labels | Best for classical listeners; catalogue depth and offline terms require a current check |
| 20. Bandcamp | Artist purchase and download model rather than a standard subscription cache | Independent artists and direct artist releases | Purchase and download music from artists; verify app playback and offline access separately | Format, quality, and storage depend on the purchased release | Do not describe Bandcamp as working like Spotify; verify the exact file and transfer terms for each purchase |
| 21. VLC for Mobile | Local-file player; no streaming subscription or catalogue | Your existing legally obtained music files | Files copied or transferred to the device can be played offline | Storage and quality are determined by the files and device; the player does not create a download | Ownership remains with the files; verify current mobile platform and format support |
| 22. foobar2000 mobile | Local-library player; no streaming catalogue | Personal music libraries managed by technically inclined users | Local files played offline | Storage and sound depend on the files, player settings, and hardware | Verify current mobile platform support and supported formats |
| 23. Poweramp | Android-oriented local-file player; verify current licensing | Personal library control, equalization, and playback customization | Local music files played without a streaming subscription | Useful when playback customization matters; storage depends on the files | Does not supply a licensed streaming catalogue; verify current Android features and license terms |
| 24. Musicolet | Offline local-library player; verify current file-management details | Personal Android music libraries | Local files played offline without a streaming subscription | Storage depends on the files and device | Good for a self-managed Android library; verify current platform and file-management features |
| 25. AIMP | Local-file music player; verify current mobile availability | Personal downloaded or transferred library | Local files played offline | Quality and storage depend on the source files and supported formats | Verify current mobile availability and format support; it is not a streaming download service |
Which app is best for downloading music for a flight?
Spotify Premium is the best general flight choice for listeners who want broad platform support, playlists, podcasts, and a large offline library. YouTube Music Premium is a better flight choice when videos, covers, live recordings, or automatic offline mixes matter; TIDAL and Qobuz are better when sound quality matters more than storage efficiency.
Spotify’s own support documentation says, “With Premium, you can download albums, playlists, and podcasts.” Spotify also documents Offline Backup for Premium mobile users, Android Auto, and CarPlay. The practical limitation is that downloads are available through Spotify rather than as files that can be opened in another music player.
According to Spotify’s support documentation, verified in the August 13, 2026 research pass, Premium supports up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices. Spotify also requires the account to go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active; prepare a flight shortly before departure rather than assuming a months-old cache will still work. Spotify’s offline-listening documentation contains the current limits and revalidation rule.

Which music apps let you listen offline for free?
Local-file players such as VLC for Mobile, foobar2000 mobile, Poweramp, Musicolet, and AIMP can play music offline without a streaming subscription, but only after you supply legally obtained music files. The research does not establish a universal list of mainstream services that provide free, transferable music downloads.
Most major subscription services require a paid plan for music downloads. Audiomack is specifically download-oriented, but its free-download rules, app restrictions, and regional catalogue vary and should be checked before relying on it. Pandora, iHeartRadio, Deezer, Napster, Apple Music, and the other subscription services in this list also require a current plan check rather than an assumption based on an old free trial or app-store description.
A free streaming tier is not the same as free offline listening. A service may let you stream at no charge while reserving downloads for a paid tier, limiting offline content, or keeping the content playable only inside its own app.
Which music app uses the least storage?
An audio-only download at a standard quality normally uses less storage than a video, lossless, Hi-Res, or Dolby Atmos download, but the dossier contains no independent storage benchmark for comparing all 25 apps.

| Storage choice | Why it uses more or less space | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Standard audio-only | Stores audio without video and avoids the larger files associated with higher-resolution formats | Best starting point for a large flight or commute library |
| Lossless or Hi-Res audio | Preserves more audio data and therefore generally requires more storage | Choose TIDAL or Qobuz when quality and compatible hardware are priorities |
| Video or music video | Stores both the soundtrack and moving images; file size also depends on video quality and length | Use YouTube Music video downloads selectively when the screen content matters |
| Local compressed files | Storage depends on the files you choose and copy to the device | Use VLC, foobar2000, Poweramp, Musicolet, or AIMP when you want direct library control |
Google says the number of downloadable items in YouTube Music depends on available storage and on the length and quality of the audio or video files. Google’s Smart Downloads feature can select up to 200 recently played songs, which is convenient but should be monitored if storage is limited. Google’s YouTube Music offline-download help page explains the storage and Smart Downloads behavior.
For listeners using a compatible Android device, a microSD card for offline music can provide extra space for YouTube Music downloads. Google specifically documents saving YouTube Music downloads to an SD card, but readers should verify the phone’s card capacity limit, card compatibility, and whether their chosen app supports SD-card storage. An SD card does not convert a subscription cache into a transferable music file. Google’s SD-card download instructions apply to YouTube Music and should not be generalized to every service.
Which apps download lossless or Hi-Res music?
TIDAL and Qobuz are the clearest choices in this shortlist for listeners seeking lossless or high-resolution listening, while Apple Music belongs in the comparison after its current plan and device options are verified.
| Service or format | What the research supports | What to check before downloading |
|---|---|---|
| TIDAL | Lossless, Hi-Res FLAC, and Dolby Atmos formats are advertised | Whether the specific track and device support the desired format, plus available storage and output compatibility |
| Qobuz | High-resolution listening and a separate downloadable-music platform | Whether the content is an app download or a purchased file, and the exact file format supplied |
| Apple Music | Lossless support is a relevant ecosystem comparison point | Current plan, device, regional availability, download workflow, and storage settings |
| Other services | Quality options vary by service and plan | Do not infer lossless or Hi-Res availability from the presence of an offline button |
TIDAL’s pricing page advertises “Ad-free, offline listening” and more than 180 million tracks in lossless, Hi-Res FLAC, and Dolby Atmos formats. According to TIDAL’s pricing page, verified in the August 13, 2026 research pass, the catalogue claim is more than 180 million tracks; that is a service-published figure, not an independent comparison measurement. TIDAL’s current pricing and feature page is the appropriate source for the claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHigh-resolution audio is a format and compatibility distinction, not a guaranteed audible improvement for every listener. A phone, Bluetooth connection, headphones, DAC, or car system may not reproduce every format at its full capability. Readers who can actually hear and use the difference may consider headphones for lossless music or wired headphones, but headphones are an optional listening accessory rather than a requirement for any app in this list.
Can I save music to an SD card?
YouTube Music documents SD-card downloads on Android, so YouTube Music Premium is the clearest verified choice for readers who need removable storage. SD-card support is not universal: the phone, operating system, app version, subscription tier, and service must all support the feature.

Google’s support documentation states, “You can download songs from the YouTube Music app to an SD card.” Google also cautions that download capacity depends on available storage and on the length and quality of audio or video files. Use the app’s current download and storage settings to select the card, then test a downloaded item before leaving Wi-Fi.
Do not assume that an SD-card download can be removed from YouTube Music and played in VLC, Poweramp, or another player. Subscription downloads are generally controlled by the service app even when the storage location is removable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I download Spotify songs as MP3 files?
No. Spotify’s offline-download feature stores app-controlled content for playback inside Spotify; it does not provide an ordinary MP3 export. The same warning applies to YouTube Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, SoundCloud, and Anghami: an offline button should not be described as file ownership.
Choose Qobuz or Bandcamp when the goal is to buy downloadable music, and choose VLC for Mobile, foobar2000 mobile, Poweramp, Musicolet, or AIMP when you already have legally obtained files. Purchased downloads and local files still have their own format, licensing, backup, and device-compatibility conditions.

A portable music player for downloaded files is relevant only when the music is supplied as a compatible file that can be transferred. A dedicated player cannot make a Spotify or YouTube Music cache portable, so check the file format and service rules before buying playback hardware.
Are downloaded songs permanent if I cancel a subscription?
Subscription downloads should not be treated as permanent ownership. Offline access can depend on an active subscription, the account remaining authorized, the content remaining licensed, and the app periodically reconnecting to the service.
Recommended Free Tools
Purchased music is a different model. Qobuz documents offline playback of downloaded content in its applications while also operating a separate music-download platform; the article should not merge those two forms of downloading. Bandcamp also belongs in the purchase-and-download category, but the exact file format, app playback behavior, and transfer rules should be checked for each release.
Before cancelling a subscription, identify which music is a purchased file and which music is only an app cache. Export or back up purchased files where the seller’s terms permit it, and do not assume that a downloaded playlist will remain playable after the subscription ends.
How should you choose among the 25 apps?
| Your priority | Best starting choices | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| One dependable all-round offline app | Spotify Premium | Broad platform support, playlists, podcasts, and a documented large offline allowance | Downloads are app-controlled and require periodic reconnection |
| Videos, covers, live recordings, and remixes | YouTube Music Premium | Downloads include songs, videos, and podcasts, with Smart Downloads | Video can consume much more storage; SD-card support is Android-specific |
| Lossless, Hi-Res, or Dolby Atmos | TIDAL | Strongest documented format range in this comparison | Higher-quality files need more storage and compatible hardware |
| High-resolution listening plus purchased music | Qobuz | Separates app offline playback from a music-download platform | Check whether the item is a streaming cache or a purchased file |
| Emerging artists, DJ sets, demos, and remixes | SoundCloud Go or Go+ | Creator-uploaded and independent material complements mainstream catalogues | Plan access and catalogue availability vary by territory |
| Arabic and MENA-focused music | Anghami Plus | Strong regional positioning with international music | Country determines availability and features |
| Amazon ecosystem integration | Amazon Music Unlimited | Fits users with Alexa, Fire TV, and other Amazon devices | Refresh current plan names, catalogue claims, and download rules |
| Radio and personalized stations | Pandora or iHeartRadio | Better aligned with radio, stations, and podcasts than permanent downloads | Verify current offline mechanisms and paid tiers |
| Regional South Asian music | JioSaavn | Relevant catalogue focus for South Asian listeners | Verify Pro downloads and country availability |
| Regional African music | Boomplay | Relevant African and regional catalogue focus | Verify supported countries, plans, and devices |
| Regional East Asian music | KKBOX or JOOX | Useful where those services operate | Offline features and territories require current verification |
| Classical discovery | IDAGIO | Composer, work, performer, metadata, and recording quality are central criteria | Verify current catalogue depth and offline support |
| Permanent artist downloads | Bandcamp or Qobuz downloads | Purchase-and-download models are separate from streaming caches | Check each release’s format, rights, and transfer rules |
| Existing local music files | VLC, foobar2000, Poweramp, Musicolet, or AIMP | Playback is controlled by your own library rather than a subscription catalogue | You must obtain, organize, back up, and transfer the files yourself |
What should you verify before relying on an offline music app?
Verify the plan, region, device, and app version before downloading an entire library. The most important checks are:
- Plan requirement: confirm whether music downloads require Premium, Plus, Pro, Go, Go+, or another paid tier.
- Offline scope: check whether the app saves songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, videos, stations, or only selected content.
- Revalidation: find out how often the account must reconnect and test playback before travel.
- Storage location: confirm whether downloads use internal storage, an SD card, or only an app-managed location.
- Quality: check whether standard, lossless, Hi-Res, or Dolby Atmos settings apply to the specific plan and track.
- Ownership: confirm whether the result is a transferable purchase or an app-only cache.
- Platform: check iPhone, Android, desktop, car, watch, and dedicated-player support separately rather than assuming feature parity.
- Regional catalogue: verify that the artists, albums, podcasts, or local-language catalogue you want are licensed in your country.
Spotify’s official offline guidance, Google’s YouTube Music download and SD-card documentation, TIDAL’s pricing and Android offline pages, SoundCloud’s subscription overview, Anghami’s app listing, and Qobuz’s offline-help page are the most useful primary references for the verified claims in this comparison. Current prices, free trials, app-store rankings, regional licensing, device limits, and affiliate availability remain volatile and should be refreshed immediately before publication.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Spotify Premium for the safest all-round flight and commute experience, YouTube Music Premium for videos and verified Android SD-card support, TIDAL or Qobuz for higher-resolution listening, SoundCloud for creator-led discovery, Anghami for Arabic and MENA catalogues, and Bandcamp or a local-file player when permanent file control matters. In every case, distinguish an app-controlled offline cache from a music file you actually own.
