Eminem released “Houdini” on May 31, 2024, as the lead single from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). The official video, directed by Rich Lee, sends an older Slim Shady into 2024 and features confirmed cameos from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Pete Davidson, Shane Gillis, and others.
The video treats Eminem’s past as a character who has literally returned through a portal. Modern Eminem appears as Rap Boy, Dr. Dre joins the opposition, and the story builds toward an “unholy hybrid version of Eminem.” The concept also provides a framework for callbacks to “Without Me” and “The Real Slim Shady,” as well as the video’s generative-AI effects.

What is the Eminem “Houdini” video about?
The Eminem “Houdini” video imagines an older Slim Shady emerging through a portal into 2024. The character reacts to modern life and tries to reshape the present according to his own worldview, while contemporary Eminem’s Rap Boy persona and Dr. Dre attempt to stop him.
The plot eventually produces what the official description calls an “unholy hybrid version of Eminem,” leaving the story with a deliberately comic-book-like transformation rather than a straightforward performance narrative. The video uses time displacement to contrast the provocative, early-2000s Slim Shady character with Eminem’s modern identity.

Director Rich Lee described the premise this way: “What if Shady from the 2000s got teleported into the modern day and we got his take on what the world has become…and what if ‘Rap Boy’ was the only person who could stop him?” The quote appears in Eminem’s official release announcement.
What does the “Houdini” video reference?
The video deliberately recalls Eminem’s earlier visual style, especially the videos for “Without Me” and “The Real Slim Shady.” The references work on two levels: the older Slim Shady character is brought back as a story device, while the video revisits the exaggerated comic-book presentation associated with Eminem’s early-2000s work.
The Rap Boy imagery also connects “Houdini” to Eminem’s earlier superhero parody. The result is less a remake of one specific video than a self-referential continuation of the visual language established by “Without Me” and “The Real Slim Shady.” Rich Lee directed “Houdini”; Joseph Kahn directed “Without Me,” and Phillip Atwell directed “The Real Slim Shady,” according to the official announcement.
How was generative AI used in the video?
Metaphysic created the generative-AI used in “Houdini,” with Jo Plaete and Chris Ume supervising the production. The technology supports the video’s visual transformation and its contrast between earlier and contemporary versions of Eminem; the official materials do not establish that every effect or every visible face was generated by AI.
