To watch the 2025 New Year’s Eve ball drop without cable, the best free option was the official Times Square webcast on December 31, 2024, starting at 6:00 p.m. ABC was a separate option through a local over-the-air antenna, while a complete official replay had not been verified as of August 13, 2026.
The date matters: “2025” identified the year welcomed at midnight, not the calendar year in which the event occurred. This article covers the Times Square celebration held on December 31, 2024, and separates the official webcast, ABC broadcast, and supplementary camera stream.
Key takeaways
- The 2025 New Year’s Eve ball drop took place on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, welcoming 2025—not on December 31, 2025.
- The best free no-cable option was the official Times Square webcast, which was scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on December 31 and continue through the celebration.
- The official Times Square coverage offered open captions and an American Sign Language stream.
- ABC’s separate network special could be received without cable through a local ABC affiliate, a digital television, and a suitable antenna where reception was available.
- A complete official replay was not verified in the research available as of August 13, 2026.
How to watch the 2025 New Year’s Eve ball drop without cable
The clearest free route was the official Times Square webcast. The event organizer listed commercial-free coverage beginning at 6:00 p.m. on December 31, 2024, with viewing through official Times Square websites and social channels, including YouTube. Viewers who wanted ABC’s network-produced special had a separate over-the-air option using an antenna and digital television.
Why the date says 2024 even though the event was called 2025
The 2025 New Year’s Eve ball drop happened on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, because the Times Square celebration welcomed the year 2025 at midnight. ABC called its broadcast Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025 and scheduled the program live from Times Square in its official holiday announcement.

What were the no-cable viewing options?
| Option | Cost and equipment | What it showed | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Times Square webcast | Free; internet-connected phone, computer, tablet, or television | The official Times Square celebration, performances, countdowns, confetti, and ball drop | Required a working internet connection; current full replay availability was not verified |
| ABC over the air | Free broadcast after the antenna purchase; digital TV and antenna required | Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025 | ABC reception depended on the viewer’s address, antenna placement, buildings, terrain, and other conditions |
| EarthCam livestream | Internet-connected device; availability depended on the platform | A supplementary 4K Times Square camera view | It was a separate camera stream, not the official Times Square entertainment webcast |
Where was the free official Times Square livestream?
The official webcast was available through the Times Square NYC NYE Live Webcast page and official Times Square social channels, including YouTube. The official page described the webcast as free and commercial-free, with live coverage starting at 6:00 p.m. on December 31.
The dated official Times Square ASL stream listing on YouTube documented a dedicated American Sign Language version. Times Square’s official New Year’s Eve FAQ also identified open-caption and ASL access.

Can you watch ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve without cable?
Yes, potentially. A viewer without cable could watch the local ABC affiliate over the air with a digital television and an antenna, provided the affiliate’s signal reached the home. The Federal Communications Commission says, “To watch a television station over the air, you need either: A digital TV set.” The FCC’s over-the-air television guidance also explains that broadcast TV can be received through an indoor or outdoor antenna instead of a cable or satellite provider.
ABC’s over-the-air feed was a different experience from the Times Square webcast. ABC carried Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025, while the Times Square stream focused on the organizer’s official celebration. An antenna therefore made sense for viewers who wanted the ABC program, not because the official Times Square webcast required one.

How to set up ABC with an antenna
- Confirm that the television has a digital tuner.
- Connect an indoor or outdoor antenna to the television.
- Run the television’s automatic channel scan.
- Check that the local ABC affiliate is received before the event begins.
- If the television is an older analog model, connect a compatible digital-to-analog converter box as well as the antenna.
Check reception for the exact address before buying an indoor HDTV antenna. AntennaWeb provides a free channel and signal estimate, but the actual result inside a home can differ because of antenna position, construction materials, nearby buildings, terrain, and other environmental factors. No particular antenna can guarantee ABC reception in every household.
Was EarthCam an official alternative?
EarthCam documented a separate 4K livestream of Times Square’s New Year’s 2025 celebration, with viewing through its website, apps, and connected-TV platforms. The dated EarthCam New Year’s 2025 livestream listing makes it useful as a supplementary street-camera view. EarthCam should not be described as the official Times Square entertainment webcast.

Can you still watch a replay of the 2025 ball drop?
The original live event is over, but a complete official replay was not verified as of August 13, 2026. The research found the official event pages and a dated official ASL listing, not a confirmed current full-event archive. Readers looking for a replay can check the official Times Square webcast page, official Times Square YouTube channel, and official social accounts, but should not assume that an old live-stream link still plays the entire event.
A short clip, camera view, or ASL listing is not necessarily a complete replay of the broadcast and Times Square entertainment coverage. Confirm the date and source before treating any third-party upload as the full 2025 celebration.

What should you remember about the 2025 ball drop?
For the December 31, 2024 celebration that welcomed 2025, the official Times Square webcast was the simplest free way to watch without cable. ABC was a separate no-cable route when local over-the-air reception worked. The webcast and antenna options had different dependencies: internet service affected online viewing, while signal strength and home conditions affected antenna viewing.
