To estimate the cost of running a PC for a 24/7 YouTube stream, calculate electricity from the computer’s average power draw and your electricity rate. Estimate upload data separately from the stream bitrate and runtime. Data volume is not the same as an internet charge: that depends on your provider’s plan, cap and overage terms.
Calculate the PC’s electricity cost
Use the computer’s average power draw while it is actually streaming—not the wattage printed on its power supply. The supply rating is not a measure of what the PC continuously draws from the wall.
- Estimate energy: average watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000 = kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Estimate energy cost: kWh Ă— your electricity price per kWh.
For continuous operation, use 24 hours for each day in the estimate. For example, a 30-day estimate uses 720 hours; a 365-day estimate uses 8,760 hours. If the PC is off for part of the period, use the actual runtime instead.

A plug-in electricity usage meter can help measure the wall draw of equipment connected through it. The result from the simple calculation is an energy estimate, not necessarily your full bill: fixed charges, taxes, tiered rates, time-of-use pricing and other tariff components may affect what you pay. The U.S. Department of Energy explains how to estimate appliance and electronic energy use; applicable rates and billing details vary by location.
Estimate how much upload data the stream uses
For a rough estimate, multiply the configured video bitrate by the time you stream. At a constant bitrate, 1 Mbps sends about 0.45 GB per hour using decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000 MB), before protocol overhead. Multiply that hourly estimate by the number of streaming hours. Actual usage can vary with settings and network protocol overhead, so treat the result as approximate.

These are illustrative calculations using the listed bitrates and 720 hours in a 30-day month; they are not measured usage figures. YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. Its live encoder settings guide lists the H.264 recommendations above and advises testing before going live. Use your actual configured bitrate for a closer estimate.
Keep the data estimate separate from internet cost. It does not tell you whether your plan has a monthly data cap, charges by usage or bills overages. Check the terms of your own internet service.

Check whether your upload connection has enough headroom
Your available upload capacity must support the stream’s total bitrate, with room for other network use and interruptions. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the upload speed available where the computer is connected. A speed test can help, but results may vary over time.
- Allow for other devices and applications sharing the connection. A connection that barely exceeds the stream bitrate may not be reliable.
- For computer streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet and checking outbound bandwidth; download speed is often higher than upload speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What the calculator can—and cannot—tell you
- It can estimate: energy use and energy-only electricity cost from your entered average watts, hours and per-kWh rate; and approximate upload data from bitrate and runtime.
- It cannot determine without your details: your complete electricity bill or the price of your internet service. Utility tariffs and ISP data policies vary.
- It should not assume: a universal PC wattage or a typical internet charge. Measure or supply your own inputs rather than treating an example as a personal result.
DIY PC versus cloud operation
With a home PC, electricity use depends on its measured average draw and how long it runs; upload data depends on the stream bitrate and runtime. Your calculations can help quantify those two items, but do not include any other equipment or service costs unless you add them separately.
