The Christmas Eve surprise
Makayla Dabney prepared the reveal as a gift for Stephen, the stepfather who had raised her since she was five. Reports from The Independent and ABC7 describe him as her father figure for roughly 14 years.
Rather than hand over the papers directly, Makayla built suspense with several nested Christmas boxes. Stephen opened one package after another until he reached an envelope containing the adoption documents.
What Makayla said
As Stephen opened the gift, Makayla explained the history behind the request. She said, “I’ve known you since I was five…you took me in as your own.” She then asked, “I was wondering if you would adopt me.”

The request made clear that the adoption was not a casual holiday gesture. Makayla was asking to formalize a parent-child relationship that, in her words and in contemporaneous reports, had already existed for most of her life.
Stephen’s reaction
Video of the moment shows Stephen becoming emotional and embracing Makayla after discovering the papers. ABC7 reported his description of the gesture as “the most amazing Christmas present a father could ask for.”

Storyful identified Stephen as the person who shared the video and Makayla as his 18-year-old stepdaughter. The footage attracted online attention in late 2017. The Independent reported approximately 130,000 YouTube views by December 31, 2017; that was a contemporaneous count, not a current total.
Was the adoption finalized?
The available coverage documents Makayla’s request and Stephen’s reaction, but it does not verify a later court filing, hearing, or finalized adoption date. The adoption papers shown in the gift therefore should not be presented as proof that the legal process was completed.
