The 2024 Wicked ends with her escaping Emerald City after refusing to help the Wizard control Oz’s Animals. Wicked: For Good completes the story: Oz is told Elphaba has died, while she survives and disappears with Fiyero.
What happens at the end of the 2024 Wicked?
The 2024 film ends with Elphaba rejecting the Wizard’s offer and the system he represents. She has discovered that he wants to use her power to strengthen his rule, not to protect Oz’s silenced Animals. In “Defying Gravity,” she reads from the Grimmerie, claims her power and escapes Emerald City on a broomstick.

That flight is the first film’s cliffhanger, not the end of the complete story. The Wizard’s government casts Elphaba as a threat, setting up the public identity named in the film’s title. Producer Marc Platt describes her as the character who “will become the Wicked Witch of the West” in NBCUniversal’s interview.
Why does Oz call Elphaba wicked?
The label is political. The Wizard and Madame Morrible use fear and misinformation to blame Elphaba for unrest and to turn the public against her. Her refusal to cooperate with the Wizard—not a change into the storybook villain’s motives—is what makes her an enemy of the regime.

Universal’s official synopsis for Wicked: For Good calls her “now demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West” and says she continues fighting for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals while trying to expose the Wizard. The wording distinguishes the reputation imposed on her from the cause she pursues.
Does Elphaba really die in Wicked: For Good?
No. The sequel’s ending reveals that the report of Elphaba’s death is a cover for her escape. She survives and goes into hiding with Fiyero, who has been transformed into the Scarecrow. Oz accepts the official version that she is dead, as Peacock’s ending explanation describes.

That public account fits the familiar The Wizard of Oz story, in which the Wicked Witch is said to be dead. The official stage musical education kit likewise records Glinda announcing that the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West is dead. In Wicked, however, the announcement does not reveal the private truth: Elphaba has escaped.
What does Glinda know, and why does she go along with the story?
Glinda’s position is divided. She remains within Oz’s public system and confirms the account that Elphaba is dead, while understanding that her friend was not the wicked enemy the regime claimed. The ending leaves Glinda as the public face of the accepted story and Elphaba alive beyond it; their friendship remains central even as their public roles diverge.

Is the ending different in the book and stage musical?
The film adapts the stage musical’s story across two movies, so the 2024 film stops at Elphaba’s escape and Wicked: For Good supplies the conclusion. The stage musical also frames Elphaba’s supposed death as the public account. Gregory Maguire’s source novel is a separate, darker and more politically adult version of the story, so its tone and character outcomes should not be treated as identical to the film’s ending.
