Documentary music has two separate questions: can you download the file? and can you legally use the recording in your film? A free MP3 may be licensed only for personal listening, while a track marked “royalty-free” may still require payment, attribution, or a one-project license.
The sites below are useful starting points for documentary filmmakers, editors, students, and independent producers. Always open the license attached to the individual track before placing it under narration, submitting a film to festivals, monetizing a video, or distributing the finished project.
What to check before downloading
For a documentary, music is normally being synchronized with images. That matters because a license that permits listening or redistribution may not permit synchronization. Look for permission covering:
- Commercial use, if the film is monetized, commissioned, advertised, or sold.
- Video synchronization and derivative works.
- Online publication, broadcast, festivals, television, or theatrical release.
- Attribution requirements.
- Territory, duration, and platform restrictions.
Creative Commons abbreviations are especially important. NC bars commercial use, ND restricts adaptations and can create problems when music is synchronized with video, and SA may impose a share-alike requirement on derivatives. “Free download” does not remove those conditions.

12 trustworthy sites for legal free music downloads
1. Free Music Archive: best general-purpose archive
Free Music Archive is one of the most useful places to find independent music with track-level license information. Its catalog is not public domain by default; most tracks remain copyrighted and are offered under Creative Commons or other specific terms.
Open a track page and click the downward-pointing arrow beside the track to download an MP3. For an album, use the arrow beneath the album artwork. Inspect “specific conditions” in the download window before saving the file.
FMA’s License filter can narrow results by permitted use. It is helpful for finding music allowed in videos, commercial projects, or remixes, but the individual track page is the final reference.
A legal FMA use can still produce a YouTube Content ID claim. Keep the track URL, license information, and attribution evidence so you can contact the artist or dispute a claim if necessary.

2. YouTube Audio Library: safest starting point for YouTube documentaries
For a documentary intended primarily for YouTube, the YouTube Audio Library is a practical first choice. YouTube provides music and sound effects that it identifies as copyright-safe for use on the platform.
The current path is YouTube Studio → Audio Library → Music. Search by genre, mood, artist, keyword, duration, or attribution requirement. Hover over the date column and click Download to obtain the MP3.
Use the Attribution not required filter when you do not want a credit obligation. For Creative Commons tracks, open the license icon, click Copy, and paste the supplied credit into the video description.
This is mainly a YouTube production-music resource. A track being safe in YouTube’s library does not automatically give you the same rights for television, a podcast, a cinema screening, or another platform. Also, credit alone does not make an unlicensed commercial song safe.

Pixabay Music offers downloadable tracks under the Pixabay Content License. The license generally permits use in commercial videos, client work, promotional material, paid training, podcasts, audiobooks, and subscription or OTT content without attribution.

- Critically acclaimed sonic performance praised by top audio engineers and pro audio reviewers
- Proprietary 45 millimeter large aperture drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Exceptional clarity throughout an extended frequency range, with deep, accurate bass response
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
- 90 degree swiveling earcups for easy, one ear monitoring, and professional grade earpad and headband material delivers more durability and comfort
The important condition is that the music must form part of a larger creative work. Do not redistribute the downloaded song as a standalone file, music library, or competing download.
Some tracks display a shield icon because they are registered with YouTube Content ID. A legal Pixabay use can therefore receive an automated claim. In YouTube Studio, use Content → See Details → Dispute → I have permission or a license to use the content. Include the track URL, Pixabay license URL, title, and an explanation of how the music is used.
Save the downloaded file, the track page, screenshots, project files, and any download certificate.
4. Musopen: strongest option for classical material
Musopen focuses on classical recordings, sheet music, and educational resources. It is particularly useful for documentaries about history, art, science, literature, and public-domain composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Schubert.
Its catalog can be filtered by composer, performer, instrument, period, mood, duration, rating, license, and quality. The free Lite account currently lists five music downloads per day.
Do not confuse a public-domain composition with a public-domain recording. Beethoven’s composition may be out of copyright while a modern performance remains protected. Musopen’s public descriptions and its Terms of Use also create enough ambiguity that commercial filmmakers should verify the recording-level license or obtain confirmation from Musopen before relying on it.
5. Jamendo Music: independent artists and Creative Commons releases
Jamendo Music is a good discovery tool for independent artists and albums. Artists may offer downloads under Creative Commons licenses, although downloads can be disabled and the exact license varies by release.

For a documentary, read the artist’s license carefully. Jamendo Music’s service terms limit downloaded materials to private and personal use in the context of the service, so a free download should not be treated as clearance for a commercial film, advertisement, podcast, or client project.
Jamendo operates a separate paid Jamendo Licensing service for synchronization. A purchased license normally identifies the project, media, territory, and other permitted uses; keep the certificate with your production records.

6. Bandcamp: artist-approved free releases
Bandcamp is not a free-music license library, but it is an excellent place to find artists who offer a track or album at no cost, through a zero-price “name your price” release, email-gated download, code, or promotional link.
The artist controls the price and the download format. The artist also controls the copyright. A free Bandcamp download gives you the file, not automatic permission to put it in a documentary, remix it, upload it to a podcast, or use it in advertising.
Check the release description for a Creative Commons notice or contact the artist directly. Get permission in writing that specifically covers synchronization, your distribution channels, and commercial or festival use.
7. Internet Archive: large, varied collections with uneven rights information
Internet Archive’s audio collection contains recordings, live performances, public-domain material, radio archives, and other uploads. It can uncover unusual historical or regional sounds that suit a documentary better than polished stock music.
Rights information is supplied at the item level, not guaranteed by the existence of an Archive download button. Open the item’s Rights or description section, identify the uploader and license, and check whether the recording itself—not merely the underlying composition—is cleared.
Do not assume that an old recording, a concert upload, or a “public domain” label is accurate. For a broadcast or commercial release, use material with a clear license or obtain permission from the rights holder.
8. ccMixter: remix-friendly Creative Commons music
ccMixter is built around Creative Commons music, remixes, samples, and instrumental tracks. It can be particularly useful when a documentary needs a rhythmic bed, electronic texture, or a version that can be edited around dialogue.
Read the license on each track and follow the attribution instructions. Some tracks permit commercial use and adaptation; others contain NC or ND restrictions. Samples and remixes can also involve multiple layers of rights, so do not rely on a vague “free” label.
Download the license information with the audio and record the artist, title, URL, and date accessed.

9. FreePD: public-domain-style production music
FreePD offers music presented as public-domain material, making it useful when you want to avoid attribution and Creative Commons share-alike conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is suited to simple documentary beds, historical montages, explainers, and background cues. Check the site’s current terms and the status of the specific recording before a major release. Even where copyright is not an issue, other rights—such as trademarks, publicity rights, or contractual restrictions—can matter in unusual recordings.
Keep a copy of the page describing the track’s public-domain status. Sites and catalogs change, and a saved record is more useful than remembering where a file came from.
10. Incompetech: dependable library for edited video projects
Incompetech, created by composer Kevin MacLeod, is widely used for online video and independent productions. Many tracks are available under Creative Commons terms with attribution, while a paid license may be available when you do not want to provide credit.
Read the individual track page for the current license and attribution wording. For a documentary, place the supplied credit in the end titles, description, or both, depending on the license and the distributor’s requirements.

11. Audionautix: free tracks with an attribution requirement
Audionautix provides a searchable library of music used in videos, podcasts, presentations, and other productions. Its free-use terms commonly require attribution, so it can be useful for independent documentaries that can accommodate a proper credit.
Search by genre, mood, or tempo, then read the site’s current usage terms before downloading. Include the requested website and composer credit in the film credits or online description. If your distributor will not accept attribution or you need broader rights, check whether a paid permission is available.
12. Bensound: free tier for selected production music
Bensound has a recognizable production-music catalog and offers a selection of tracks under a free license. It is useful for polished documentary intros, explainers, short films, and web videos.

The free and paid terms are not interchangeable. Free tracks may require attribution and may have limits on platforms, projects, or distribution. Paid plans can provide broader licensing, but you still need to select the plan that matches the film’s use.
Download the license certificate or retain the page showing the relevant terms. Do not use a preview, a free track, or a track found through a search engine without confirming which license applies.

Download-and-license checklist
- Save the original track URL and the artist or uploader name.
- Save a screenshot or PDF of the license and download page.
- Record the title, license name, license version, and date accessed.
- Check for NC before using the documentary commercially.
- Check for ND before synchronizing, editing, or distributing the music with video.
- Check SA obligations before distributing a derivative work.
- Copy attribution exactly and decide where it will appear: end credits, description, or both.
- Keep certificates, invoices, permissions, and correspondence in the documentary’s rights folder.
- Expect that YouTube Content ID may claim even legally licensed music.
- Do not confuse “royalty-free,” “free download,” “copyright-safe,” and “no attribution required.” They describe different things.
FAQ
Is music that is free to download automatically legal to use in a documentary?
No. The download price and the usage license are separate. A track may be free for personal listening but restricted for commercial films, synchronization, redistribution, or podcasts.
What is the safest free source for a YouTube documentary?
YouTube Audio Library is the clearest starting point because YouTube identifies its music and sound effects as copyright-safe on the platform. Check whether a track requires attribution and do not assume the same permission applies outside YouTube.
Recommended Free Tools
Can legally licensed music still trigger a YouTube copyright claim?
Yes. Content ID claims are automated and can affect licensed tracks from Free Music Archive or Pixabay, among others. Keep the license evidence and use YouTube’s dispute process when the claim is incorrect.
Do I need permission to use a public-domain classical composition?
You may not need permission for the composition, but the particular recording can still be protected. Verify the recording’s license rather than relying only on the composer’s public-domain status.
The Bottom Line
For most documentary projects, start with Free Music Archive for breadth, YouTube Audio Library for YouTube-first releases, Pixabay Music for commercial video backgrounds, and Musopen for classical material. Use Jamendo, Bandcamp, Internet Archive, and the other specialist libraries when their individual licenses fit the project.
The defensible workflow is simple: choose the track, read the track-level terms, save proof, provide the required credit, and confirm that synchronization and commercial distribution are allowed. That takes a few minutes and is far safer than trying to repair a rights problem after the documentary is published.
