For the U.S. weekend of October 9–11, 2026, the clearest film picks include a kidnapping thriller on Netflix, a new Spielberg sci-fi release on Peacock, and an Oasis reunion-tour documentary on Hulu and Disney+. The schedule also brings returning series, new episodes, and family shorts across several services. Availability can vary by location and subscription, so check your service’s listing before watching.
Friday, October 9: New films and premieres
Animals — Netflix
Ben Affleck directs, co-writes, and stars in this kidnapping thriller alongside Kerry Washington. They play a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife, who must figure out how to pay a ransom after their son is kidnapped; Gillian Anderson also co-stars. The Associated Press describes the setup, but that premise alone—not a claimed critical consensus—is the reason to put it on a thriller shortlist. Read the AP weekend roundup.
Disclosure Day — Peacock
Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller stars Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt and centers on extraterrestrials and people challenging those who keep secrets about them. AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr’s review calls it “a classic, big-hearted Spielberg adventure” and frames its ordinary people as rebelling against shadowy secret keepers. That is Bahr’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Read the AP roundup and review description.
The Housemaid — HBO Max
CinemaBlend lists the film’s HBO Max start date as October 9. The schedule listing establishes the service and date; it does not provide enough detail here to summarize the story or make a recommendation based on genre. See CinemaBlend’s October HBO Max schedule.

Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger — Hulu and Disney+
This documentary follows Oasis’s 2025 reunion tour. Bahr, writing for AP, says its portrait of forgiveness, fandom, and music is “quite moving,” while also noting it is not especially hard-hitting or revelatory. That may suit viewers more interested in the reunion and its emotional texture than in a deeply investigative account. Read the AP weekend roundup.
Matchbox: The Movie — Apple TV
John Cena plays an undercover CIA agent who brings childhood friends—including Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris—on a globe-trotting action adventure. AP notes that the title refers to Mattel’s Matchbox toys. The listing supplies the action-film hook and cast, but not a basis for judging the film’s quality. Read the AP weekend roundup.

- For a crime-thriller premise: start with Animals and its ransom plot.
