There is no neutral, universally certified list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. The best place to start depends on what you want from a list: an international snapshot of film opinion, a canon focused on American movies, or one critic’s personal guide. These approaches answer different questions, so their results should be read as invitations to watch and debate—not as a final verdict on taste.
What “greatest” means depends on who is choosing
A ranking can reflect a poll, an institution’s defined remit, or an individual’s taste. Each method has a different electorate, scope, and purpose. Treating their results as if they measured the same thing obscures what makes each list useful.

| List | Who selects | Scope and format | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BFI Sight and Sound | Critics and filmmakers | International poll conducted once a decade | A snapshot of professional film opinion and how critical consensus changes over time |
| AFI 100 Years…100 Movies | American Film Institute list | American movies | A geographically defined national canon and a starting point for discussion about American film |
| TIME’s 100 movies | Critic Stephanie Zacharek | An authored selection spanning ten decades | A personal guide whose stated considerations include craft, spirit, performances, emotional impact, and a film’s relation to its era |
Start with the Sight and Sound poll for an international perspective
The BFI’s Sight and Sound poll is the closest match for readers seeking a recurring international critical survey. Its 2022 edition includes the top 100 and introductions to earlier polls, making it useful both as a viewing guide and as a record of shifting professional opinion. It is not a universal measurement of quality: it reflects the views represented in a particular poll, at a particular time.
Use the list to explore across film histories and traditions, then follow titles or filmmakers that catch your attention. The BFI page also provides context for previous editions, so readers can see the poll as a changing conversation rather than a timeless scorecard.

Choose AFI when you want a specifically American canon
AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies is explicitly about the greatest American movies. That narrower scope is a feature, not a flaw: it answers a national-canon question that an international poll does not. AFI says its lists are intended to inspire “personal, passionate discussions about what makes a great film and why.”
Use AFI’s list when you want to explore American cinema within the institution’s stated frame. Do not compare its outcome to Sight and Sound as though both lists used the same eligibility rules or electorate.
Rank #2
Read a critic’s list as an individual point of view
TIME’s 2026 feature is critic Stephanie Zacharek’s own selection of 100 films across ten decades, not a poll or institutional consensus. Zacharek describes a method shaped by long experience—“I’ve spent more than 50 years choosing”—and considers qualities such as craft, spirit, performances, emotional impact, and a movie’s relationship to its era. The feature also acknowledges historical barriers that have shaped who has been able to make films.
This kind of list is valuable because its author can explain the sensibility behind the choices. It is best used as a critic’s guide: follow the reasoning, discover films beyond your usual range, and decide where your own responses diverge.
Why respected lists disagree
They are built to represent different things. A recurring international poll records the opinions of participating critics and filmmakers; AFI’s list is limited to American movies; Zacharek’s list is an individual selection. Differences in eligibility, geography, electorate, and stated purpose make disagreement expected. Combining their results into a single “definitive” ranking would require choices about weighting and inclusion—and those choices would belong to whoever created the combined list.
That disagreement can make the lists more useful, not less. Criterion Channel describes the Sight and Sound list as a prompt for debates about assumptions and biases in the canon and for “obsessive viewing quests.” A title’s appearance on one list, or absence from another, can be a reason to investigate the lists’ different frames rather than a simple verdict on the film.

How to turn a greatest-movies list into a watch plan
- Pick the question you want answered. Choose Sight and Sound for an international poll, AFI for an American canon, or TIME for one critic’s guide.
- Use the list as a discovery route, not a score. Select films that broaden your viewing—by era, style, or filmmaking tradition—and keep notes on what works for you.
- Follow disagreements. If a film appears on one list but not another, consider each list’s scope and method before treating the difference as a judgment.
- Check access in your territory. Criterion has physical releases associated with the Sight and Sound poll, and Criterion Channel has a poll-related streaming collection. Neither guarantees that a particular title is currently available in every region; verify the film and territory on the relevant pages before planning a watch.
- Consider a physical checklist if that suits you. 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die is a film-list guidebook that can serve as a separate watchlist or reference. It is an optional companion, not a substitute for understanding how a particular canon was assembled.
