The General Lee was more than a bright orange car: it was a recurring character, a carefully recognizable TV prop and, over the course of The Dukes of Hazzard, a heavily used stunt vehicle. Here are ten details that separate what the show presented from what production accounts and later history establish.

What was the General Lee?

1. It was a 1969 Dodge Charger

The series presented the General Lee as an orange 1969 Dodge Charger driven by cousins Bo and Luke Duke. Its key identifiers were the 01 on its doors and a Confederate battle flag on the roof. The series-car reference also notes that its horn played the first 12 notes of “Dixie.”

2. Its look made it instantly recognizable

The orange paint, large door numbers and roof emblem made the car legible even in fast-moving chase scenes. These details were part of the vehicle’s television identity, not incidental trim; they helped make the car itself one of the show’s central attractions.

How did the car become a stunt vehicle?

3. A notable early jump took place in 1978

History.com dates a stunt on the Georgia set to November 11, 1978, when a stuntman launched the Charger over a police car. The account captures the show’s early commitment to spectacular car action. History.com’s report describes the jump and the production’s use of the car.

4. More than 300 different cars reportedly appeared

History.com reports that more than 300 different General Lees appeared during the series. That is a published account, not an independently audited production inventory, so it is best understood as a reported total rather than a definitive count of surviving or documented cars.

5. The opening credits preserved one car’s jump

Although production used many Chargers, History.com says the first General Lee’s jump was reused in the opening credits, giving that particular car an appearance in every episode. That recurring footage helps explain how one car could become synonymous with the series even as other cars handled the work on set.

6. “The General Lee” was a fleet, not a single surviving car

It is easy to talk about the General Lee as though the show used one continuous vehicle. The reported production total and reused opening footage point to a more practical reality: the screen identity belonged to a succession of cars, while a signature shot supplied visual continuity.

What is show mythology, and what is production evidence?

7. The cars were exposed to repeated jumps and damage

The car stunts were demanding enough that the production account describes hundreds of different vehicles over the run of the show. That scale is consistent with a stunt-heavy series, but it does not establish the history of any particular Charger or prove how every example was built.

8. The welded-door story should not be treated as universal fact

A common claim says every General Lee had its doors welded shut, with actors climbing through the windows. The available material does not support that as a universal production fact; a Dodge-focused article explicitly disputes the claim. Without stronger documentation, it is safer not to repeat it as a blanket rule.

Why is the roof flag controversial?

9. The flag became more than a production design choice

The Confederate battle flag was integral to the General Lee’s familiar appearance, but it carries associations with slavery, segregation and white supremacy. Those meanings make it a contested symbol rather than uncomplicated decoration. The show’s car design cannot be separated from the wider history and public meaning of the emblem.

In 2015, amid renewed national debate over the flag, Warner Bros. said it would no longer sell merchandise adorned with it, as TIME reported. TIME also reported that TV Land pulled reruns; the network did not state its reason, so the action should not be presented as an explicitly explained decision.

10. John Schneider offered a defense, not a settled verdict

John Schneider, who played Bo Duke, told TIME in 2015: “The Dukes of Hazzard was and is no more a show seated in racism than Breaking Bad was a show seated in reality.” That is Schneider’s characterization of the program. It is not a neutral historical finding, and it does not resolve why viewers interpret the flag or its use differently.

What do collectibles tell us about the General Lee?

A historical Toy Wonders catalog lists an ERTL JoyRide General Lee die-cast model in 1:18 scale. That establishes that such a product was cataloged, not that it remains in production, is currently in stock or has a particular licensing status. Listings and images can also reproduce the Confederate battle flag, so collectors should check the specific item rather than assume all versions present the same graphics. Toy Wonders’ catalog is historical evidence of a past product, not a current shopping guarantee.

Likewise, old valuation material should not be mistaken for today’s market price. Kelley Blue Book published a 2005 press release about the 1969 Charger in connection with the film release, but that is not a current valuation guide. Kelley Blue Book’s press-release archive provides historical context only.
