Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was not the first animated feature. It was, however, Walt Disney’s first feature-length film—and a landmark because it brought ambitious storytelling, expressive animation, color, music and commercial success together in a way that helped make animated features a serious theatrical prospect. Calling it Disney’s “most important” film is an argument, not an objectively settled ranking; these ten connected reasons explain why it remains a strong candidate.
1. It established Disney’s feature-length ambition
Released on December 21, 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the Disney studio’s first feature-length film. Its production took about four years, according to the Walt Disney Family Museum. Moving from short cartoons to a feature meant sustaining characters, story and visual interest over a much longer running time—a different creative undertaking, not simply a longer short.
That distinction matters when asking whether Snow White was first: it was Disney’s first feature, but it was not the first animated feature overall. J.B. Kaufman’s essay for the Library of Congress National Film Preservation Board explicitly cautions against that broader claim. Kaufman’s essay on the Library of Congress site argues for the film’s importance in how it combined techniques, color, music and developed story.
2. It showed that an animated feature could command the theatrical stage
The film premiered at Hollywood’s Carthay Circle Theatre. The Walt Disney Family Museum recounts that the industry audience responded with laughter, tears and applause, and that the film enjoyed an extended engagement there before opening in New York and more widely. The scale of that reception helped challenge the idea that animation belonged only in short-form entertainment.

The achievement was not merely that audiences watched a feature-length cartoon. The film was presented as a major theatrical event, designed to compete for attention with live-action features.
3. It brought a wide range of animation techniques and rich color into one film
Kaufman’s Library of Congress essay identifies the film’s distinction not as chronological priority, but as its synthesis of a broad range of animation techniques, rich color, musical score and developed story. The combined effect gave the fairy-tale world visual variety and helped sustain a feature-length experience.
The point is the integration: technique served the film’s changing moods and scenes rather than functioning as a checklist of technical novelties. That breadth is a more supportable reason for calling the film groundbreaking than claiming it invented animated feature filmmaking.

4. It advanced personality animation
In Kaufman’s account, personality animation means using movement, gesture and even the way a character walks to make personality visible. The character is not just a figure that performs an action; the action expresses who the character is.
This approach gave the film a way to communicate character through animation itself. Viewers could read distinctive temperaments in behavior, not only in dialogue or plot descriptions.
5. It made seven similar-looking characters easy to tell apart
The dwarfs offered a particularly clear test of personality animation. Their shared size and broad visual resemblance could have made them difficult to distinguish, but the film gave each a recognizable identity through design and behavior. Their differences make the ensemble legible even when several appear together.

The result is more than a set of names attached to similar bodies: the group becomes a cast of individuals, each contributing a different presence to the story.
6. It developed a traditional fairy tale for feature-length storytelling
The filmmakers did not simply stretch the folk tale to fill a feature. Kaufman describes months of story conferences that shaped a cinematic continuity from the traditional story. Sustained development gave the adaptation room to build its world, establish its characters and carry the narrative across a longer form.

7. It made songs and score part of the film’s appeal
Music was one of the elements integrated with the story and animation. Kaufman credits Frank Churchill with all the film’s songs and notes that “Some Day My Prince Will Come” became an enduring American songbook standard. The songs gave the film memorable musical moments, while the score contributed to its broader emotional and theatrical effect.
Music, in this account, was not separate decoration: it formed part of the film’s identity and helped its appeal extend beyond the images on screen.

A reliable box-office total with a clearly defined accounting scope is not established by the sources cited here, so a precise gross or all-time ranking would overstate what they show. The museum’s account supports the qualitative conclusion: Snow White was a major success for Disney.
9. Its success encouraged the industry to pursue animated features
The commercial response mattered beyond Disney. The Walt Disney Family Museum says rival animation producers responded by announcing feature-length projects. That is evidence of an industry effect: Snow White made the prospect of investing in animated features harder for competitors to ignore.
It did not single-handedly create every later animated film, and the available account does not establish a complete causal history. It does show that the film’s success helped make feature-length animation look like a serious proposition to other producers.
10. It became a lasting cultural and preservation landmark
Recognition after the film’s release reinforces its long-term significance. The Walt Disney Family Museum reports that Snow White was among the first 25 films selected for the National Film Registry in 1989 and that the American Film Institute named it the Greatest Animated Film of All Time in 2008. It also recounts the Academy’s special custom award, whose citation called the film “a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field for the motion picture cartoon.”
These honors do not settle every possible ranking of Disney films, but they show that the film’s artistic and historical standing has endured. Its importance rests on the combination of creative achievement, theatrical success and influence—not on being first in every sense.
Why the original Snow White still matters
The strongest case for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is cumulative. It was Disney’s first feature, a carefully developed fairy-tale film, an experiment in personality-driven animation and a theatrical success that helped encourage feature-length projects elsewhere. Its legacy is not a single invention or a definitive “most important” title; it is the way those elements converged in one landmark film.
