Short answer: In the United States, classic theatrical Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts are still available, but not as one dependable streaming library. Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is Warner Bros. Discovery’s announced ongoing television home; Warner Bros. Classics offers authorized YouTube compilations; digital stores sell selected packages; and DVDs and Blu-rays remain the most reliable long-term option. Do not assume that Max still carries the complete classic catalog.

What counts as “classic” Looney Tunes?
This article means the original Warner Bros. theatrical shorts released primarily from the 1930s through the 1960s under the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies banners. That golden-age catalog includes Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, shaped by directors including Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Robert McKimson and Frank Tashlin.

TCM is the key television destination
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on January 26, 2026 that TCM had become the ongoing television home for the iconic Looney Tunes library. Its February launch included a Bugs Bunny Star of the Month presentation featuring 45 cartoons (Warner Bros. Discovery announcement).

That means scheduled programming, themed blocks and tributes—not an assertion that every short is available whenever you want. Check the current TCM schedule; schedules change and carriage depends on your provider. A published example is TCM’s July 2026 primetime schedule.
Watch TCM authentication
Watch TCM requires a TCM subscription through a participating cable or satellite provider. TCM’s settings information also lists device options including Amazon Fire TV and Apple AirPlay. It is authenticated streaming, not a universally free standalone service.
Hulu’s live TCM route
Hulu’s TCM page advertises access beginning at $11.99 per month as displayed in August 2026 (Hulu). This is access to the live network. It should not be read as a promise of a complete, on-demand Looney Tunes collection. Confirm the channel, plan and local availability before subscribing.

Free viewing: Warner Bros. Classics on YouTube
The verified Warner Bros. Classics YouTube channel posts authorized compilations and character-focused selections, including material from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. It is the easiest legal starting point if you want to sample the cartoons without paying.
Its videos are arranged by character or theme rather than as a complete year-by-year or director-by-director index. A compilation can disappear or change, so YouTube is excellent for casual viewing but unsuitable as your only archival plan.
Can you still watch them on Max?
Max once announced a classic library of more than 250 theatrical shorts from 1930–1969 (historical Warner announcement). That is catalog history, not proof of current availability. Current reporting indicates the classic library was removed from Max in 2025, and Max should not be treated as the dependable complete source in 2026 (current-status reference).
Rank #3
Max may carry Looney Tunes Cartoons or related Warner programming. Finding that modern series in an app does not establish that the original theatrical shorts are there.
Digital purchases: convenient, but inspect the package
Classic material is reported for purchase through Apple TV, Amazon Video and Fandango at Home (JustWatch’s U.S. listing). Digital stores may label shorts as episodes, seasons or mixed-era collections. Apple’s U.S. listing spans the 1930s through the 2000s and includes work associated with Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson and Friz Freleng (Apple TV).
Before buying, open the episode list and check each title, runtime, production year and description. A storefront listing called Looney Tunes does not guarantee that it contains only golden-age theatrical shorts, every short you want or a particular restoration.

Why physical media still matters
For dependable repeat access, physical releases remain the strongest choice. The Looney Tunes Golden Collection series comprised six four-disc DVD volumes with roughly 60 shorts per volume, although the sets are not automatically complete, uniformly in print or easy to find (catalog background). Warner Archive and other Warner releases may offer different selections and transfer quality.

- Durability: A disc is not removed because a streaming license changes.
- Context: Releases may include commentary, documentaries, music information or restoration notes.
- Trade-offs: Used prices, condition, standard-definition transfers and out-of-print status vary widely.
Inspect the actual contents and transfer details of each volume rather than assuming that a collection is definitive or uncensored. Warner’s consumer site and Warner Archive are useful starting points, but availability changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why these shorts are still worth watching
They make directing visible
Watch several shorts by one director and the differences become apparent. Jones often builds dry reactions and carefully staged escalation; Freleng emphasizes musical precision and tightly timed beats; Clampett pushes elastic motion and manic surrealism; Avery accelerates the premise and breaks the fourth wall; McKimson frequently grounds the comedy in direct physical characterization. These are not interchangeable factory products.
Best Value
They are compact comedy laboratories
A short usually presents one clear comic premise, develops it through repetition and reversal, then delivers a concentrated payoff. That structure works for a family watching two cartoons, an animator studying staging and timing, or an adult who wants a complete experience without committing to a long series.
They document animation history
The catalog covers a formative period in American theatrical animation. Music, background painting, layout, camera movement and editing all carry as much meaning as the dialogue. Watching by director, character or production era reveals how those techniques evolved.
How to watch with children
These were theatrical shorts, not a uniform preschool package. Some contain slapstick violence, weapons, smoking, racist caricature, cultural stereotyping or outdated gender portrayals. Apple’s listing itself flags violence (Apple TV). Preview selections, explain period context and decide what is appropriate for the child; do not assume that every short is equally suitable for very young viewers.
Some cartoons have historically been edited, withdrawn or accompanied by disclaimers. Unless a particular release documents its presentation, do not promise an uncensored or complete version.
