Yes—you can legally watch movies and TV shows on an iPhone or iPad without paying for a monthly streaming subscription. The catch is that “free” usually means ad-supported, not ad-free, and no single app has every film or episode. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, YouTube, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, and FilmRise primarily use advertising. Kanopy and Hoopla provide access through participating libraries, colleges, or universities.

Catalog size is not the same as catalog value. Free services often specialize in older films, genre titles, television libraries, documentaries, live channels, or rotating licenses rather than current theatrical releases.
1. Tubi: the best all-around free catalog
Verdict: Start with Tubi if you want one general-purpose app for movies, television, live channels, news, sports, and genre programming.

Tubi is a free, ad-supported service with both on-demand programming and live content. It supports iPhone and iPad, although the applicable operating-system requirement and availability should be checked in the current App Store listing or Tubi’s iOS device information. Tubi also describes its free catalog and supported platforms on its official service page.
Account: The current sign-in flow can change; an account may be useful for personalization, watchlists, and resuming across devices.
Best for: Viewers who want the broadest mix of free movies and TV without committing to a live-channel format.
Main drawback: Ads are part of the service, titles rotate, and availability differs by country. A film may appear in a search result but not be playable in your region.
2. Pluto TV: the best live-TV experience
Verdict: Choose Pluto TV if you prefer opening a channel guide and watching whatever is currently airing.
Pluto TV combines free live channels with on-demand movies and shows. Its U.S. App Store listing describes genre channels, news, sports, family programming, television series, and on-demand viewing. Channel lineups and counts are not permanent, so treat any number shown in the listing as time-sensitive.
Account: Check the current App Store and in-app sign-in flow; requirements may differ by feature.
Best for: Anyone who wants a cable-like experience without a cable subscription.
Main drawback: Scheduled channels are less convenient than on-demand playback. The service is ad-supported, and programming varies by location.

3. The Roku Channel: best for Roku Originals and free live channels
Verdict: The Roku Channel is worth trying even if you do not own a Roku device, particularly if you want free Roku Originals or live channels.
Roku offers free ad-supported movies, shows, Originals, children’s programming, and live channels through The Roku Channel. Roku says its Originals can be watched without owning a Roku device. The mobile app is also a Roku-device companion and remote, so do not confuse the remote-control function with the streaming catalog.
Account: Roku says some mobile-app features require signing in to a Roku account. Confirm the current requirement when installing.

4. Plex: best for free streaming alongside a personal library
Verdict: Plex is the most useful choice for people who want free ad-supported programming in the same app as their own legally acquired media.
Plex provides free ad-supported streaming and live TV, but it is also a personal-media-server platform. You do not need to assume that every title shown in Plex is free: some listings can involve rentals, purchases, paid features, or other providers.
Account: An account is generally the most practical way to use Plex’s full experience, especially when connecting to a personal library.
Best for: Existing Plex users and households that want one app for personal media and free streaming.

5. YouTube: best for finding specific official free titles
Verdict: YouTube is useful when you are searching for a particular official movie, documentary, classic program, or creator-uploaded series, but it is not a consistently organized free-movie catalog.
Some officially licensed movies and television programs are available with ads. YouTube Premium is a separate paid service and is not required for every free title. Search results also include trailers, clips, commentary, unofficial uploads, and links to paid services.

Main drawback: Finding a search result is not proof that the full title is legally available. Look for official channels and clear free-with-ads labeling.
6. Xumo Play: best for a large channel-style lineup
Verdict: Xumo Play is a live-TV-style alternative to Pluto TV and Sling Freestream.
The service is designed around free, ad-supported programming, with a channel-browsing experience and, depending on the current app and region, on-demand options. Because channel counts, iOS features, sign-in requirements, and availability can change, check the current Xumo Play listing in your country’s App Store before installing.
Account: Verify the current requirement in the app.
Best for: Viewers who enjoy browsing channels rather than building a queue of individual films.
Main drawback: The lineup changes, and the experience may emphasize live viewing more than on-demand movies.
7. Sling Freestream: best for free live channels and news
Verdict: Sling Freestream is a useful option for free live channels, particularly for viewers who want news and a television-style guide without subscribing to Sling.
Sling’s free tier should be treated separately from paid Sling plans. Confirm that the current iPhone or iPad app exposes Freestream without a paid plan, and check the present channel lineup, on-demand selection, and sign-in requirements.

8. FilmRise: best for older and specialist programming
Verdict: FilmRise is a good specialist option for classic television, crime, documentaries, reality programming, and older films.
FilmRise’s free programming is ad-supported and generally more focused than the broad catalogs of Tubi or Pluto TV. The exact app name, publisher, catalog, and whether genre-specific FilmRise apps appear in your storefront should be checked in the current App Store listing.

Main drawback: It is less likely to satisfy someone looking for the newest mainstream releases, and some FilmRise programming may also be available inside other free services.
9. Kanopy: best for documentaries, classics, and independent cinema
Verdict: If your public library, college, or university participates, Kanopy is often the strongest free option for documentaries, educational films, classics, and independent cinema.
Kanopy is not universally free for anyone who downloads the app. Access depends on a participating institution, and the institution may impose monthly play credits, title limits, or other rules. A library card by itself does not guarantee access: your library must have a Kanopy arrangement.
Account: A participating library, college, or university account is required.
Best for: Students, documentary viewers, cinephiles, and people seeking library-quality or educational programming.
Main drawback: The catalog and monthly allowance depend on the institution, so two users in different library systems may see very different selections.

How to choose
- Best overall: Tubi, for a broad mix of on-demand movies, TV, and live programming.
- Best live-TV replacement: Pluto TV or Xumo Play, for channel guides and scheduled programming.
- Best Originals: The Roku Channel, provided you are in a region where direct mobile streaming is supported.
- Best for personal media: Plex, if you already maintain a legal personal library.
- Best for documentaries and classics: Kanopy, if your library or school participates.
- Best for library borrowing: Hoopla, if your library offers it and its borrowing limit suits you.
- Best for a specific official title: YouTube, when you can identify the legitimate channel or rights holder.
What “free” really means
These services use several different models:
- Free with ads: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel’s free programming, Plex’s free programming, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, and FilmRise.
- Selected free titles: YouTube and hybrid services that also display rentals, purchases, or premium subscriptions.
- Free through an institution: Kanopy and Hoopla, where access depends on a participating library, college, or university.
A free trial is not the same as a free catalog. Netflix, Max, Paramount+, Peacock, Apple TV+, and similar subscription services should not be counted merely because they sometimes offer promotions. Likewise, an app that requires a cable login, paid rental, or subscription for the relevant title is not free for that viewing purpose.
Before installing an app
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search the exact service name.
- Check the developer name and official icon, not just the first search result.
- Read the current compatibility requirement for your device and iOS or iPadOS version.
- Install the official app.
- Create an account only when required or when it provides useful features such as watchlists and cross-device resume.
- Before playback, confirm that the title is labeled free rather than rental, purchase, or premium content.
Do not install apps or profiles that promise every new theatrical release at no cost. Be especially cautious with services requiring sideloading, configuration profiles, unofficial enterprise certificates, excessive pop-ups, forced notifications, or unrelated device permissions. An App Store listing is not, by itself, a guarantee that every similarly named app is trustworthy.
Ads, downloads, and regional restrictions
Most free ad-supported services are designed for online streaming. Do not assume that a movie can be downloaded for offline viewing, or that offline downloads are available without a paid tier. Unless the service’s current iOS documentation explicitly confirms downloads, treat offline playback as unconfirmed.
Catalogs are licensed territory by territory. Your Apple ID storefront, physical location, device compatibility, and the title’s individual rights can all affect what you see. If an app is unavailable, possible causes include country restrictions, an unsupported operating system, a different Apple storefront, a renamed or consolidated app, or removal from the store.

If a title appears but will not play
- Check whether it is free or marked as a rental, purchase, or premium title.
- Sign in if the service requires an account for that title or feature.
- Confirm that the title is licensed in your current region.
- Update the app and your device software where supported.
- Check Screen Time and parental-control restrictions.
- Try another network if the current one restricts video delivery.
- Search again later; a title can leave a service while an index or search result remains visible.
If advertising becomes unusually disruptive, update the app, review its playback and privacy settings, and try the service’s web or Apple TV interface if supported. You can also switch to another free service. Use a paid ad-free tier only when the provider officially offers one.
Watching on a television
You do not need extra hardware to use these services on an iPhone or iPad. If you want a larger screen, check whether your television already supports the relevant apps or AirPlay before buying anything. An Apple TV 4K, Roku player, compatible Google TV device, or a suitable HDMI adapter may help, but casting and wired mirroring are app-specific. A Roku mobile app can also be a remote for a Roku device, which is separate from using The Roku Channel directly on a mobile device.

Can I download free movies for offline viewing?
