HBO Max has not been folded into Paramount+. Paramount Skydance has announced plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery and combine Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto TV into a larger direct-to-consumer business. But as of August 16, 2026, the transaction had not closed, and there was no final price list, service name, app-migration schedule or subscriber-transition policy.
That means a single, simpler streaming experience is possible—but so are higher prices, more plan tiers and a difficult migration for existing customers.
What has actually been announced?
Paramount Skydance’s February 27, 2026 announcement described a definitive agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. It said the combined company would bring together Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto TV as part of a larger streaming business.
The announcement also cited consolidation of streaming technology stacks and other expected efficiencies. Paramount said the transaction could produce more than $6 billion in synergies. That is a company projection—not a promise that subscribers will receive lower prices.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The practical distinction matters: the deal is a corporate acquisition, while folding HBO Max into Paramount+ would be a separate product and technology decision. The first has been announced. The second has not been fully specified.
Is HBO Max definitely going away?
No. The strongest current conclusion is that Paramount plans to combine the businesses, but has not confirmed exactly how HBO Max will appear afterward.
Several outcomes remain possible:
- Full absorption: HBO Max becomes a section or content hub inside Paramount+.
- One app with multiple identities: Paramount+ becomes the main app while HBO remains a prominent premium destination.
- A new combined service: Both existing brands are replaced or subordinated under a new name.
- Gradual integration: Customers receive access to both libraries first, while apps, accounts and technology are consolidated later.
- Different international products: The rollout varies by country because rights, sports packages, regulations and existing services differ.
The HBO name could survive even if the HBO Max app does not. HBO has significant premium value, and earlier analysis noted that eliminating the brand entirely could weaken one of the company’s strongest reasons for charging more. Ars Technica’s November 2025 analysis treated the disappearance of HBO Max as plausible, not confirmed.
“One service” can mean several different things
Subscribers should not treat “combination” as a single event. It could involve several layers:

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
| Layer | What could change |
|---|---|
| Content | Shows and films from both libraries become searchable in one catalog. |
| Application | One app becomes the primary viewing interface. |
| Account | Customers use one login, profile system and billing relationship. |
| Plans | Existing subscriptions are mapped to new advertising, premium, sports or family tiers. |
| Technology | Back-end streaming systems, customer support and data systems are consolidated. |
| Brand | HBO Max, Paramount+ or both are renamed, repositioned or retained as hubs. |
| Rights | Catalogs remain limited by country, licensing agreements and plan restrictions. |
These changes do not have to happen together. A company can combine catalogs while keeping two apps, or retire an app while preserving HBO as a distinct premium section.
Why prices could rise
No post-merger price has been announced. Nevertheless, higher prices are a plausible commercial outcome for several reasons.
- A larger catalog can be used to justify a more expensive premium tier.
- Promotional discounts may be reduced after the services are combined.
- HBO’s premium reputation may support higher pricing than a narrow Paramount+ plan.
- Advertising tiers may remain relatively inexpensive while ad-free viewing, higher resolution, downloads or sports access move into costlier plans.
- A household paying for only one service could be migrated to a broader package that costs more.
- Live programming, sports or premium films could become upsells rather than universal benefits.
A merger may lower the company’s technology and operating costs without lowering the customer’s bill. Savings can instead improve margins, fund programming, support acquisition debt or be returned to investors. Paramount’s projected synergies should therefore not be read as a forecast of cheaper streaming.
Who could benefit?
The clearest potential winners are households already paying for both services. If the final product provides both libraries under one reasonably priced plan, those subscribers could eliminate an app, password and monthly bill.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
A combined service could also help viewers who want HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, DC programming, Paramount films and series, CBS content, Nickelodeon, Showtime-related programming and Discovery nonfiction in one place. Unified search, profiles, downloads and parental controls could reduce the friction of switching between services.
Paramount could benefit too. Consolidated technology, marketing, customer support and account systems may be more efficient than maintaining separate platforms. But those corporate benefits are not automatically consumer benefits.
Who could lose?
- HBO Max-only subscribers who do not want to pay for a broader Paramount package.
- Paramount+-only subscribers who prefer a cheaper, narrower service.
- Customers with grandfathered prices that disappear during plan conversion.
- Annual subscribers whose prepaid access, extensions or refunds are handled differently than expected.
- Third-party-billed customers using Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, a cable company or a wireless provider.
- Viewers in international markets where licensing and product structures differ.
- Customers on older devices if a new app ends support for legacy hardware.
- People who value HBO’s distinct identity and dislike a larger, more commercial catalog.
A single catalog can also be less flexible than two smaller services. The best HBO programming might be restricted to a higher tier, while the cheapest plan contains more advertising or fewer features.
What happens to the HBO brand?
The important question is not only whether the HBO Max app survives. It is whether HBO remains a distinct premium identity.

Possible approaches include keeping HBO as a prominent hub inside Paramount+, using HBO as a label for premium programming, or preserving a separate HBO-oriented product while broader Warner Bros. Discovery content moves elsewhere. Paramount could also create a new combined brand.
Retaining the HBO name would make commercial sense if the company wants to preserve HBO’s association with prestige programming and premium pricing. But a broader Paramount+ interface could still dilute that identity if HBO content becomes difficult to find or is presented alongside a much larger volume of unrelated programming.
What remains unknown for subscribers?
No final consumer migration plan had been identified by the August 16, 2026 cutoff. The companies had not announced:
- the final service name;
- the launch or migration date;
- post-merger monthly or annual prices;
- whether HBO Max subscriptions automatically become Paramount+ subscriptions;
- whether Paramount+ customers automatically receive HBO Max content;
- whether current prices will be grandfathered;
- how annual prepaid plans will be handled;
- whether watchlists, profiles, downloads and parental controls transfer;
- whether device limits, simultaneous streams or video quality change;
- how Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, cable and wireless billing will be treated;
- whether sports and live programming are included in every plan;
- how advertising tiers will divide the combined catalog.
Those details will determine whether the merger is genuinely simpler or merely a larger service with more complicated tiers.

The regulatory timeline is not finished
The deal has made progress, but regulatory clearance in one place does not mean an immediate consumer launch.
- November 7, 2025: Reporting described the possible acquisition and potential HBO Max integration.
- February 27, 2026: Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a definitive acquisition agreement.
- June 12, 2026: The U.S. Department of Justice said it had closed its antitrust investigation and did not believe the transaction was likely to harm competition based on the evidence it reviewed.
- July 22, 2026: Paramount announced European Commission clearance.
- July 24, 2026: The companies agreed to postpone closing amid a lawsuit by 12 state attorneys general. AP reported that closing would be delayed until five days after the state case is resolved or until the merger agreement expires in June 2027. AP report.
- August 6, 2026: AP reported that the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority had cleared the transaction, while U.S. state litigation remained relevant. AP report.
Accordingly, HBO Max has not already become Paramount+. The legal timetable still affects when any consumer-facing integration could begin.
What subscribers should do now
- Do not cancel solely because of the merger news. Keep a service if it currently provides programming you want.
- Review renewal dates. This is especially important for annual or promotional subscriptions.
- Identify your billing provider. A subscription billed through an app store, television provider or wireless company may require different instructions from a direct subscription.
- Do not create a second account during a transition. Wait for official instructions to avoid duplicate charges.
- Save account information and receipts. Keep confirmation emails, plan details and billing records.
- Watch for changes to ads, streams, downloads and video quality. A plan that preserves access to a catalog may not preserve every feature.
- Compare the final package with your actual viewing. If you watch only one or two shows, seasonal subscriptions or rotating services may be cheaper than maintaining a large bundle year-round.
For readers looking to reduce paid subscriptions, Pluto TV remains Paramount’s free, ad-supported service. The merger announcement names Pluto TV as part of the combined direct-to-consumer portfolio, but does not say that its free model will change. Pluto TV should not be treated as a replacement for the complete HBO Max or Paramount+ catalogs, premium video features or guaranteed access to particular programs.
How different households may view the deal
| Household | Potential outcome |
|---|---|
| HBO Max only | Could gain more content, but faces the greatest risk of paying for a broader package it does not need. |
| Paramount+ only | May receive more value, but could lose a low-cost plan or face higher pricing. |
| Both services | Most likely to benefit from one account, provided the combined price is below two separate subscriptions and the desired content remains accessible. |
| Family household | Could benefit from a broader children’s and family catalog, but should check profiles, simultaneous streams and parental controls. |
| Sports viewer | Should not assume that combining apps combines every sports right, regional restriction or live channel. |
| Ad-averse viewer | May face a higher bill if ad-free viewing becomes a premium tier. |
| Annual or third-party subscriber | Should wait for specific conversion, refund and billing instructions. |
Bottom line
Paramount Skydance has announced plans to combine Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto TV, but HBO Max has not yet been confirmed as a discontinued standalone service. The merger remained legally unresolved as of August 16, 2026, and no final consumer pricing, branding or migration plan had been announced.

The final value will depend less on the merger announcement than on the price, plan rules, technical execution and whether HBO retains its premium identity.
