There is no universally accepted winner among the best movie soundtracks of all time. This ranking brings together original scores, song compilations, musicals and hybrids, judging each on its musical quality, contribution to the film, memorable themes or songs, cultural staying power and appeal outside the movie. The order is an editorial judgment, not an objective canon.

That mix matters: the Recording Academy distinguishes albums made predominantly of original score from compilations made predominantly of songs or non-original instrumentals. Both can be called soundtracks, but they do different work. The picks below make the category clear so readers can compare them fairly.

How this ranking weighs scores and soundtrack albums

A film score is music composed chiefly to accompany a film; a soundtrack album may instead collect songs used in it, or combine songs and score. The Recording Academy recognizes the distinction in separate categories: its Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category covers albums predominantly comprising original score, while its compilation category covers albums predominantly comprising songs or non-original instrumental compositions.

These picks are not all the same kind of album. They are ranked for musical quality and cohesion, how effectively they define or support the film, the staying power of their themes or songs, and how rewarding they are to hear apart from the screen. Familiarity and sales can add context, but neither alone proves artistic merit.

10 best movie soundtracks of all time, ranked

1. Star Wars (1977) — original score

Music by: John Williams. Type: original orchestral score.

John Williams’s broad, instantly recognizable themes give the film a musical identity as vivid as its visual world. The score’s recurring motifs help make characters and places feel distinct, while its orchestral sweep gives the adventure momentum without depending on pop-song placements. It also works as a standalone listening experience: its themes and contrasts make the album feel like a complete musical journey.

There is meaningful institutional recognition, but it has a defined scope: the American Film Institute’s 2005 list covers 25 scores for American films and ranks Star Wars first. AFI presented the list at a Hollywood Bowl event on September 23, 2005; it is a prominent benchmark, not a universal all-time verdict. AFI’s 100 Years of Film Scores.

2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) — original score

Music by: Ennio Morricone. Type: original score.

Morricone’s score turns sound into character: its unusual vocalizations, sharp accents and memorable central theme give the film a musical language all its own. The music shapes tension and scale, and its bold timbres remain compelling without the images. Composer and director selections in TIME’s 2014 practitioner round-up include this kind of distinctive, score-led work among markedly different approaches to film music; that article records personal choices rather than a ranked consensus. 3. The Wizard of Oz (1939) — musical soundtrack

Principal songwriters: Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg. Type: musical soundtrack.

The songs are not incidental decorations: they carry character, mood and the film’s sense of discovery. “Over the Rainbow” anchors the emotional journey, while the contrasting musical numbers make the world feel populated and theatrical. Heard as an album, the songs retain their melodic clarity and a strong sense of progression. The film’s music remains a useful reminder that a soundtrack can be both a set of songs and a structural part of storytelling.

4. The Bodyguard (1992) — song compilation

Principal artist: Whitney Houston. Type: song-led soundtrack album.

Whitney Houston’s performances give this album its center of gravity. “I Will Always Love You” became inseparable from the film for many listeners, while the surrounding songs give the album a polished pop and R&B character. Its commercial reach is extraordinary: the Associated Press reported in March 2024 that the soundtrack had sold 45 million copies and called it the best-selling soundtrack of all time. That is AP’s reported figure, not an audited current total or a measure of artistic quality. Associated Press on the commercial reach of movie soundtracks.

5. American Graffiti (1973) — song compilation

Type: licensed-song compilation.

Its oldies-heavy selection does more than establish a period setting: the songs create a flowing soundtrack to a night of cruising, conversation and changing social worlds. The record’s strength is cohesion through sequencing and atmosphere rather than a single newly composed score. It is also a good example of a film making older songs feel newly connected to a shared screen story. TIME’s 2014 round-up of directors’ and composers’ selections includes American Graffiti among the varied films whose music practitioners value.

6. The Omen (1976) — original score

Music by: Jerry Goldsmith. Type: original score.

Goldsmith’s choral writing gives the score a striking contrast between sacred-sounding voices and menace. The music helps make dread feel ceremonial rather than merely loud, giving the film a recognizable sonic signature. TIME’s 2014 practitioner selections include The Omen, an example of how a score can remain memorable through its sound world and its effect on a film’s atmosphere, not just through a hummable melody.

7. Barbie (2023) — hybrid soundtrack

Principal artists include: multiple contemporary performers; executive producer: Mark Ronson. Type: hybrid of original songs and film music.

Barbie The Album gathers new songs designed to work within the film’s world while also standing apart as a contemporary pop album. That balance is central to its appeal: the tracks carry distinct artist identities, yet the collection keeps a shared, high-color sensibility. AP reported that the album sold 126,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2023, figures reported in its March 2024 coverage. Those numbers describe an opening-week result, not an ongoing sales total.

8. Nights of Cabiria (1957) — original score

Music by: Nino Rota. Type: original score.

Nino Rota’s music balances buoyancy and melancholy, helping the film move between comedy, vulnerability and emotional uncertainty without flattening those shifts. Its melodic warmth can be heard on its own, but the score’s real strength is the way it deepens the film’s changing emotional register. TIME’s 2014 list of personal soundtrack choices includes Nights of Cabiria, underscoring that practitioners value more than large-scale spectacle or familiar popular songs.

9. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) — musical soundtrack

Music by: Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman. Type: original musical soundtrack.

The songs make the film’s satire work on two levels: they are comic performances in the story and carefully built musical numbers in their own right. Their shifts in style and theatricality give the album variety, while recurring jokes and motifs reward listeners who know the film. TIME’s 2014 round-up includes the film among the selections of directors and composers, a reminder that animation and comedy can yield soundtrack albums with substantial musical craft.

10. American Beauty (1999) — hybrid soundtrack

Type: a combination of score and selected songs.

The album’s subdued textures and carefully chosen songs establish a reflective, unsettled mood rather than pushing every scene toward a dramatic peak. Its interest lies in restraint: the music leaves space for the film’s images and performances, then shapes the emotional aftertaste. TIME’s 2014 practitioner choices include American Beauty, illustrating a different route to a strong film-music identity from the sweeping themes of a traditional orchestral score.

Why “best soundtrack” depends on what you mean

There is no single authoritative list that settles the question across all kinds of film music. AFI’s list is limited to scores for American films; TIME’s 2014 article presents individual selections by directors and composers, not a ranked global album canon. Award categories also draw a line between predominantly original score and song-led compilation albums. A list that mixes them, like this one, should say so and explain the standard used.

The music can serve the film and still hold up beyond it. In AP’s March 2024 reporting, Sony Pictures Music Group president Spring Aspers described successful film music as an extension of storytelling, while Barbie executive producer Mark Ronson said music would be at the heart of the film even though it was not a musical. The strongest soundtrack albums make that dual purpose audible: they deepen the screen experience and offer something coherent when heard on their own.

Current award context is not an all-time ranking

The Recording Academy’s 2026 Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media winner was Ludwig Göransson’s Sinners. Eligibility for that award covered recordings released August 31, 2024, through August 30, 2025. It is current award context for a defined category and eligibility period, not evidence of an all-time ranking.
