Rachel Zegler’s “Waiting on a Wish” gives Disney’s live-action Snow White a new musical introduction to its heroine—and a strong case for Zegler as a Disney princess. The song is an original number written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, with a concept rooted in one of the 1937 film’s most recognizable images: the wishing well. That makes the performance more than a showcase; it connects a new Snow White to the story’s familiar visual and emotional language.
What is “Waiting on a Wish”?
“Waiting on a Wish” is an original song performed by Rachel Zegler for Disney’s live-action musical Snow White (2025). Disney credits Benj Pasek and Justin Paul as its writers. In Disney’s official video description, the company identifies it as an original song by the pair, performed by Zegler: Disney’s official “Waiting on a Wish” video.
The song was released in several distinct contexts. Apple Music lists the single with a March 5, 2025 date; Disney published its promotional video on March 6; and Disney UK described the number as “the first single from the film’s original soundtrack” in a March 12 press release about Zegler performing it at Spain’s Alcázar of Segovia. The film opened in theaters on March 21, 2025. These dates refer to separate release and promotional records, rather than one shared launch date. See the Apple Music single listing and Disney UK’s report on the Segovia performance.
Why the wishing well matters
The song’s connection to the animated classic is built into its setting. Disney production notes attribute the idea to producer Marc Platt, who said: “Benj and Justin came up with the idea of Waiting on a Wish, which allowed them to write a song around a wishing well, which is an iconic image of the animated Snow White.” The well is not merely a backdrop: it ties the new musical number to an image audiences associate with the original film.

That link gives the song a useful balance. Its title and composition are new, but its central image belongs to the story’s established visual world. Zegler’s performance can therefore introduce this version of Snow White while still signaling continuity with the character’s animated history. The wording and attribution appear in Disney’s production notes.
How the song supports Zegler’s Snow White
Calling the performance a moment that “solidifies” Zegler as a Disney princess is an interpretation, not a measured finding about audience reaction. The official materials establish that she plays Snow White and sings the number; they do not show that the song changed public opinion or prove a consensus about her status.

As a critical reading, though, the claim has a clear basis: the song places Zegler at the center of a new musical scene, written specifically for this film, while anchoring it in an emblematic image from the 1937 story. A princess is defined not only by costume or casting, but by how a film gives her interiority and presence. “Waiting on a Wish” offers Zegler room to make the character’s hopes audible. It is that combination of performance and story function—not an external popularity metric—that makes the number feel like a defining Snow White moment.
