Lady Gaga described the songs as a way for the characters to express what dialogue alone could not.
How Phoenix went from resistance to agreement
Phoenix said the idea of Joker performing songs began with a dream. He called director Todd Phillips afterward because he thought the notion might have something to it. Music already belonged to Phillips’s conception of Arthur Fleck: he saw romance and panache in the character, and treated the musical premise as an extension of Arthur’s gestures and the bathroom dance in the first film. The Hollywood Reporter’s September 2024 account describes how the idea took shape before Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver sat down to write the sequel.
Phoenix recalled that Gaga had suggested live singing early in the process. His first response was: “No, we’re not… You can sing live if you would like.” He later agreed. At the September 4, 2024 Venice press conference, he explained: “And ultimately we did it, and it was really the only way.” Phoenix also said they worked with a pianist and that “every part of the recording was live.” The Venice press conference records the exchange.
Why Phillips wanted the vocals live
Phillips said the filmmakers wanted the songs to feel spontaneous, off the cuff, and “dirty,” rather than polished in the familiar style of a conventional movie musical. His concern was that vocals recorded long before a scene was filmed could lose their connection to the actors’ emotional state on the day. As he put it: “So really, the only way to solve that is to sing it live, on the day, in the space.”

That is a creative rationale, not a claim that live vocals are always better. In Phillips’s account, recording during the scene gave the actors a chance to respond to the moment and the physical setting instead of trying to reproduce an emotion captured earlier. The available remarks establish the presence of a pianist and live recording, but do not describe the film’s microphones, playback methods, post-production, or final soundtrack mix.
What the songs do for Arthur and Harley
Gaga said she did not necessarily think of Joker: Folie à Deux as a conventional musical. Instead, the songs let the characters express what ordinary dialogue could not. “The way that music is used is to give the characters a way to express what they need to say because the scene and just the dialogue was not enough,” she said at the Venice press conference.

Gaga also described approaching the vocals by “unlearning technique” and allowing the song to come from the character. That approach fits the film’s stated aim of making the numbers feel less like polished interruptions and more like an extension of Arthur and Harley’s inner lives.
Why the film uses familiar songs—and how Harlequin differs
Phillips said the filmmakers chose existing songs they imagined Arthur might know, including music his mother could have played while he was growing up. Familiar material, in that view, belonged to Arthur’s inner world. The film’s song choices were not newly commissioned originals.

At the London premiere on September 25, 2024, Gaga described Harlequin as a companion album containing much of the music in the film as well as original pieces she wrote for it. She singled out “Happy Mistake” as an album-only song. The album therefore should not be treated as a track-for-track account of the film: Gaga’s description distinguishes its film music from additional original material. Billboard’s London premiere coverage reports her comments.

“It was really the only way” refers to the creative choice the cast and director made for these performances: sing in the moment, with the scene, rather than rely on vocals recorded well beforehand. Phillips emphasized emotional immediacy; Gaga emphasized music’s ability to carry what dialogue could not. Phoenix’s initial reluctance makes the line less a blanket endorsement of live singing than an explanation of why it made sense for this film.
