The episode’s most startling moments are not just shock scenes: they reveal how Jocelyn’s pressured comeback and Tedros’s growing influence are beginning to collide. Here are six scenes that stand out for their provocation, discomfort, or plot turn—not a universal ranking of viewers’ reactions.
What happens in “Double Fantasy”
In the episode, which aired June 11, 2023, Jocelyn presents her team with a revised version of “World Class Sinner” before trying to film a music video. The shoot becomes a pressure point where perfectionism, physical strain, grief, and the expectations surrounding her comeback converge. Meanwhile, Tedros brings Jocelyn and Leia into contact with Izaak and Chloe, and Dyanne’s connection to him comes into focus as Nikki considers Dyanne as a potential artist. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing credits Sam Levinson as director and Reza Fahim, Sam Levinson, and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as writers.
Six scenes that make the episode feel like a WTF turn
1. The new “World Class Sinner” opens with a provocation
Jocelyn’s revised track begins with overtly sexualized vocal sounds, immediately putting the new direction on display. TheWrap treats the choice as deliberately on-the-nose, while ELLE describes her team’s response as negative. The scene makes the comeback feel like a test: Jocelyn is presenting a bolder version of the song, but the people around her are not simply celebrating it.
2. The video shoot turns physical distress into part of the workday
The music-video shoot is the episode’s central pressure cooker. TheWrap reports that Jocelyn’s team says makeup needed extra time to cover self-harm scars, and describes her feet and thighs as bloody after the demanding performance. W Magazine recounts her breaking down and calling for her late mother. These details make the scene unsettling without turning self-harm into spectacle: the episode connects her distress to grief and the strain surrounding her return to work.

3. Tedros uses a shock collar on Izaak
In TheWrap’s account, Tedros uses a shock collar while directing Izaak. It is a stark display of control over someone in his circle, and a clue to the coercive dynamic behind his confident public persona. The moment also advances the second strand of the episode: Tedros is not merely entering Jocelyn’s social world; he is shown exerting authority over his followers.
4. Dyanne’s introduction of Jocelyn has another purpose
Nikki notices Dyanne’s performance and considers her as a possible signing, while the episode’s recaps establish that Dyanne is already connected to Tedros. That information changes how her role looks in retrospect: introducing Jocelyn to Tedros can be read as part of a plan, rather than a neutral social gesture. It is one of the episode’s most consequential reveals because it ties the music-industry plot to Tedros’s scheme.

5. Jocelyn and Tedros’s encounter is deliberately uncomfortable
Jocelyn and Tedros have a sexual encounter that ELLE and W Magazine criticize as awkward or uncomfortable. That is those critics’ interpretation, not a claim about every viewer’s response. In the episode’s wider context, the scene stands out because Tedros is moving closer to Jocelyn while the story has already shown his control over Izaak.
6. The piano singalong closes on blunt lyrics and a changed circle
The episode ends with Jocelyn, Tedros, Leia, Izaak, and Chloe singing together at the piano. ELLE reads the lyrics as conspicuously blunt; W Magazine emphasizes that this moment comes after Tedros has moved further into Jocelyn’s personal life. The scene is intimate on its surface, but the new group around the piano makes that intimacy feel loaded.

How the episode’s two storylines connect
Jocelyn’s strained return to music and Tedros’s expanding hold over her circle are the episode’s parallel tracks. The video shoot brings Jocelyn’s grief and physical distress into the work of making a comeback, while Dyanne’s double role and Tedros’s treatment of Izaak expose the dynamics of the group gathering around her. The shocks matter because they also move the plot: Tedros gains access, his followers’ roles become clearer, and Jocelyn’s professional pressure remains unresolved.
Critics do not read the episode in the same way. ELLE and W Magazine respond sharply to parts of it, while TV Obsessive offers a more thematic reading of its erotic-thriller and music-industry strands. Paul Keelan of TV Obsessive wrote, “Aptly titled ‘Double Fantasy,’ Episode 2 of The Idol is all about mirrors, substitutes, and double-crossing.” That is a critic’s interpretation of the title and episode, not official creator commentary.
