The Tomatometer is a measure of review sentiment, not an average grade. A film reaches 100% when every critic review currently counted by Rotten Tomatoes is classified as positive. It does not mean every critic gave the film 10 out of 10, nor does it mean the film will appeal equally to every viewer.
Review volume matters. A 100% score supported by a small review pool carries less evidence of broad critical durability than a perfect score supported by many reviews. Scores can also change when Rotten Tomatoes adds, removes, or reclassifies reviews. Audience scores measure a different group and can diverge substantially, as the difference between Only Yesterday’s 100% critic score and 82% audience score illustrates.
