Steve Perry said he left Journey because he no longer felt he could keep going: “It was my heart.” A serious hip injury and disagreement over surgery made continuing with the band harder, but Perry described his lost enthusiasm and desire to move forward as the deeper reason—not the injury alone.
Why did Steve Perry leave Journey?
In a 2018 interview with Tracy Smith for CBS News, Perry said his heart was no longer in continuing with Journey. He described the band’s push to address his injured hip as a group decision about surgery, one he was unhappy with and chose to postpone. As the band considered other singers, Perry said, “we went our separate ways.” CBS News’ interview and transcript capture both parts of his explanation: an emotional decision to step away and a practical disagreement over how to proceed.
He had lost the desire to continue
Perry’s clearest answer was brief: “It was my heart.” CBS also described him as worn down by years of touring. In a contemporaneous CBS Sunday Morning interview announcement, his explanation was summarized as falling out of love with music and wanting to move forward. The hip injury mattered, but Perry did not present it as the whole reason he left.
The hip injury became a practical breaking point
Perry had a severely injured hip, and Journey wanted him to address it so the band could continue. He recalled that surgery became “a group decision”; unhappy with that arrangement, he chose to put it off. Perry said the band checked out other singers, after which they separated. His account makes the tension clear: the band needed a path forward, while Perry wanted to decide when—or whether—to undergo surgery.

When did Steve Perry leave Journey?
The answer depends on what “leave” means. Perry’s Concord artist biography quotes him saying, “My last show with Journey was in February of 1987.” That is the date of his final Journey performance, not a complete account of the later separation discussed in his 2018 CBS interview. The CBS account concerns a later period after he and the band had reunited, when the hip injury and surgery decision became central. The sources cited here do not establish a precise date for that later split, so it should not be collapsed into the February 1987 show date.
In the Concord biography, Perry also described feeling he had to jump off “this big beautiful mothership” the band had built together. Read alongside his later comments, that image conveys the difficulty of leaving a successful group while feeling unable to continue. Was the split mainly about conflict with his bandmates?
There were disagreements, but the available accounts do not establish personal or creative conflict with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain as the sole cause of Perry’s departure. In a 2008 GQ interview, Perry was asked whether creative and personal differences contributed. The excerpt includes him describing disagreement as part of life and recalling the band’s chemistry positively. That makes conflict relevant context, but it does not outweigh his later, direct explanation about lost enthusiasm and the hip-surgery decision.

Journey continued with another lead singer; CBS reports that the band later settled on Arnel Pineda. Perry, meanwhile, said he wanted to move forward and stepped away from music for a long period. These are consequences of the separation, not evidence that the hip injury by itself caused it.
