The three familiar theatre seating levels are Orchestra, Mezzanine, and Balcony: usually the main floor nearest the stage, a raised section above or behind it, and an upper level. Those labels are common, not universal. Each theatre defines its own layout, so check the venue’s seating chart and accessibility information before choosing seats.
What are the three levels of seating in a theatre?
In many traditional theatres, the names describe broad areas arranged from the stage outward and upward:
- Orchestra: commonly the main floor closest to the stage.
- Mezzanine: commonly a raised section above or behind the Orchestra.
- Balcony: commonly an upper seating level.
These are conventions, not a standard shared by every venue. South Coast Repertory describes the Orchestra as its main floor, the Mezzanine as above and behind it, and the Balcony as the uppermost level. Shubert Theatre New Haven describes its Orchestra as the first level, Mezzanine as the middle, and Balcony as the top. South Coast Repertory’s seating chart and Shubert Theatre New Haven’s seating charts show how those terms apply at those particular venues.
Why the number and names of levels vary
A theatre may divide its seats into two, three, four, or more named areas. For example, South Coast Repertory’s Julianne Argyros Stage has four named levels: Orchestra, Mezzanine, Balcony, and Box. Shubert Theatre New Haven describes three levels, with box seats on the sides of each. Santa Fe Opera describes two broad levels: a main floor and a mezzanine it also calls a balcony. These venue-specific differences are why a section name alone cannot tell you exactly where a seat is.

Boxes, Loge, and other labels
Boxes may be separate areas, often at the sides of a theatre, or may be described alongside the main levels. At South Coast Repertory, boxes flank the stage and are listed as their own level; Shubert Theatre New Haven describes box seats on the sides of its three levels. Other theatres may use terms such as Loge. Check the venue’s map legend to see what any label means there.
How to compare seats on a theatre’s chart
Use the specific theatre’s chart rather than assuming that a familiar section name guarantees a particular distance, elevation, or view.

- Locate the section and row. Find the seat on the venue’s own map and note its level, row, and position relative to the stage.
- Check the elevation and overhang. Look for notes about upper sections extending over seats below them. At Santa Fe Opera’s Crosby Theatre, the mezzanine overhangs the main floor beginning at Row W; that detail applies to this venue, not theatres generally. See the Santa Fe Opera seat map.
- Look for view restrictions. Read any seat-specific or production-specific view notes shown by the venue or ticket seller. A section label by itself does not establish whether a particular seat has an obstructed view.
- Confirm the route to the seat. Check whether stairs are involved and whether an elevator serves that level. At the James Earl Jones Theatre, the published access information says the Mezzanine is reached by elevator or 25 steps and the Balcony by elevator or 55 steps; it also notes about two steps down per row in each section. These are details for that theatre. See The Shubert Organization’s James Earl Jones Theatre page.
Accessibility depends on the venue and seat
Do not assume an upper level has elevator access, that a seat is step-free, or that a wheelchair location is available just because of the level name. Access can differ by theatre and by row or section.
- South Coast Repertory identifies wheelchair spaces in the Orchestra and at Box D via elevator; it also says Mezzanine Row J is at ground level while several other rows require steps.
- Santa Fe Opera lists wheelchair locations on the main floor and mezzanine and identifies particular rows or zones with no stairs.
- The James Earl Jones Theatre lists an elevator serving the Mezzanine and Balcony, along with venue-specific stair counts and wheelchair and companion locations.
Before buying, consult the theatre’s current accessibility page or contact its box office with the patron’s specific needs. Venue arrangements may change, so verify the route and seat details for the performance you plan to attend.

Is Orchestra, Mezzanine, or Balcony always best?
No level is universally best. The venue sources establish that layouts, elevations, overhangs, and access routes differ, but they do not establish a universal ranking of views or audience satisfaction. Choose by checking the exact seat location, any view notes, and your access needs against the theatre’s current chart.
