Roofman is a 2025 comedy-drama based on Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army serviceman whose roof-entry robberies earned him the nickname. He was caught and sentenced, later escaped, and hid inside a Charlotte Toys ‘R’ Us. The film dramatizes that case; it is not a documentary, and the available reporting does not verify every scene.
Who was the real Roofman?
Jeffrey Manchester was a former Army serviceman who robbed fast-food restaurants by entering through their roofs. The Associated Press reported that he began robbing McDonald’s locations in 1998 and was believed to have targeted more than 40 stores. He was caught in 2000 and received a 45-year prison sentence, according to the AP’s 2025 account: Associated Press report.
The nickname “Roofman” comes from that method of entry. The case’s unusual next chapter—an escape followed by a prolonged hidden stay inside a toy store—is the basis for the film’s central story.
Did Jeffrey Manchester really hide in a Toys ‘R’ Us?
Yes. The AP reports that Manchester escaped in 2004 and hid inside a Charlotte, North Carolina, Toys ‘R’ Us for months. Paramount’s official film synopsis describes the hideout as lasting six months; that figure is the film’s synopsis, rather than a precise duration independently established here in case records: Paramount Pictures’ film page.

How much of Roofman is true?
The broad outline is grounded in Manchester’s reported case: the roof-entry robberies, his arrest and sentence, his 2004 escape, and the Toys ‘R’ Us hideout. The AP says most events happened broadly as portrayed, while also characterizing the movie as a made-for-Hollywood story. That supports calling it based on a true story, not treating it as a scene-by-scene record. The available accounts do not establish which individual scenes or dialogue are exact.
