Gale: Yellow Brick Road is a horror film inspired by L. Frank Baum’s Oz stories. Its trailer follows Emily Gale, Dorothy’s granddaughter, as visions draw her toward a decayed version of Oz—and familiar figures such as the Tin Man, Scarecrow and a wicked witch take on nightmarish forms. The film played as a one-night theatrical event on February 11, 2026.
What is Gale: Yellow Brick Road about?
Fathom Entertainment’s official synopsis begins decades after Dorothy returned from Oz. Now tormented by memories of a world no one believes existed, she is linked to her granddaughter Emily, who inherits a family curse and begins experiencing visions. Those visions pull Emily toward Oz, depicted not as a bright fantasy but as a ruined place ruled by madness and horrors.
The story blurs the line between past and present, and between dreams and reality. Its central question is whether Oz was only a tale Dorothy told—or a frightening place Emily must confront for herself.
Is it a horror movie?
Yes. The film is presented as a horror reimagining inspired by Baum’s Oz fiction, not as a newly announced adaptation of the 1939 film. The trailer announcement describes Emily seeing the world her grandmother recounted, then offers glimpses of recognizable Oz characters in disturbing, altered forms.

Director Daniel Alexander described his approach as drawing on realism rather than fantasy, with Oz shaped by “decay, memory, and emotional fracture.” He also said that expanding the story from short film to feature meant keeping its emotional core while making Oz darker and more immersive. Alexander’s comments were reported by Wesley Stenzel for Entertainment Weekly in an article hosted by Fathom on January 8, 2026.
Who is Dorothy’s granddaughter?
Emily Gale is the granddaughter at the center of the film. She is the character whose visions and inherited family curse lead her toward the horrors of Oz. The feature grew from Alexander’s 2023 short film Gale – Stay Away From Oz.

How does the film connect to L. Frank Baum’s Oz?
The film takes inspiration from the Oz stories and reworks their world and familiar characters through horror. Executive producer Dane Petrali said the project drew on darker themes in Baum’s original Oz novels. That is a statement about the film’s inspiration; it does not make the trailer a remake of a particular earlier screen version.
Petrali described Gale: Yellow Brick Road as the first film in a planned trilogy, with future chapters intended to reveal more of Oz and its characters. This describes a plan, not confirmation that additional films are in production.
