The Heene family became the focus of a national search on October 15, 2009, after a homemade balloon drifted away and they reported that six-year-old Falcon might be inside. The balloon landed empty; Falcon was found hiding in the rafters above the family’s garage. The ensuing criminal case ended in guilty pleas and sentences for Richard and Mayumi Heene, followed by pardons in 2020. In Netflix’s 2025 documentary Trainwreck: Balloon Boy, the family disputes the familiar account that the episode was planned for publicity. Recent reporting placed them in Florida, though exact current details have not been independently verified.
What happened in the Balloon Boy incident?
On October 15, 2009, a homemade helium balloon shaped like a flying saucer broke free in Colorado. The Heene family reported that their six-year-old son, Falcon, might be aboard. Responders and news helicopters tracked the balloon as it drifted; it landed empty about 50 miles from Fort Collins. Falcon was later found at the family home, hiding in the rafters above the garage. CBS/AP’s contemporaneous reporting recounts the search and its aftermath.
Two days later, Richard Heene denied that the episode was a hoax, telling reporters, “Absolutely no hoax.” At that point, the sheriff’s office said it was still considering the possibility and had no reason yet to conclude that the incident had been staged. The public suspicion that followed should not be confused with what officials had established on the day of the flight.
Was Balloon Boy a hoax?
The story shifted after Falcon appeared on television and was asked why he had not come out of hiding. His response helped fuel suspicion, but the central account of a planned publicity stunt came later through a search-warrant affidavit. In October 2009, CBS/AP reported that the affidavit said Mayumi Heene told investigators that she and Richard knew Falcon was at home and had lied to authorities. The affidavit reportedly attributed a motive of making the family more marketable and said the plan had been devised about two weeks earlier. CBS/AP’s report and ABC/Reuters’ account describe what the affidavit alleged.

That is an affidavit-based account as reported by news organizations, not a direct, independently verified confession from both parents. Richard denied a hoax in the initial coverage, and the family later disputed the publicity-stunt explanation. The legal case is a separate part of the record: both parents pleaded guilty to specific offenses, even as Richard later said the pleas were entered under pressure.
What happened to Richard and Mayumi Heene legally?
Richard Heene pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public servant and received a 90-day prison sentence. Mayumi Heene pleaded guilty to filing a false report and received a 20-day sentence. Colorado Governor Jared Polis pardoned the couple in 2020, according to TIME’s 2025 retrospective. The pardon followed the pleas and sentences; it does not erase the fact that those legal outcomes occurred.

What does Trainwreck: Balloon Boy say?
Netflix released Trainwreck: Balloon Boy on July 15, 2025. The documentary includes interviews with Falcon and his parents, whose retrospective accounts disagree with the familiar claim that the flight was planned as a publicity stunt. Richard says he did not intend for the balloon to break free, while Falcon recalls hiding in the garage attic. These are participants’ later recollections, not a new legal finding about intent.
The documentary also presents the perspective of Bob Heffernan, identified by TIME as an investigator with the Larimer County Sheriff’s office. Heffernan says the family had been trying to get a television show and that getting their name into the news was, in his assessment, the motive for the hoax. That is the investigator’s interpretation as recounted in the documentary, distinct from the family’s later version and from the court record. TIME’s report and transcript detail the film’s competing accounts.

Where is the Heene family now?
TIME reported in 2025 that the Heenes had moved from Colorado to Florida. In a July 2025 interview with The Daily Beast, Richard said he lived in Florida with Mayumi and their three sons, who worked on tiny homes on family property. Those details come from reporting and Richard’s statements; they do not establish an exact address, independently verified employment, or the family’s circumstances in 2026. The Daily Beast’s interview gives the family’s account of life after Colorado.
