Spoilers for season 2, episode 6, “Au Revoir les Enfants.” The finale ends with a partial escape, not a homecoming: Ash flies to the United States with Laurent, while Daryl and Carol stay behind and set out for England through the Channel Tunnel. Their journey—and whether they can eventually get home—remains unresolved.
What happens at the end of the season 2 finale?
Daryl and Carol each try to make sure the other gets a place on Ash’s plane. But an attack at the makeshift airfield derails their plan. Carol remains on the ground as Ash takes off with Laurent, sending the boy away from the immediate danger and toward the United States.
Daryl stays with Carol. With help from Fallou, they meet Fiona and Angus, Scottish travelers who know a way through the disused Channel Tunnel toward England. Daryl and Carol begin the crossing with them, but the tunnel brings dangers of its own. The finale ends before they reach England, much less make it home.
Who gets away, and who stays behind?
- Ash and Laurent: They leave by plane for the United States. The episode shows the plane taking off; it does not show their eventual arrival or what happens after.
- Daryl and Carol: They stay behind and continue together toward England through the Channel Tunnel.
- Fallou: He chooses to remain with Akila rather than continue the journey.
- Anna and Jacinta: Anna turns her bargain with Jacinta against her pursuers by redirecting them into walkers. Anna is killed, and Jacinta shoots herself after Laurent escapes.
Why do Daryl and Carol stay behind?
The attempted escape forces a choice: Laurent can get out of immediate danger on the plane, while Daryl and Carol must take a more perilous route together. Their staying behind is not a rejection of Laurent, nor does it prove they have given up on getting home. It is a bittersweet trade-off: Laurent gets a chance at safety, while Daryl and Carol accept the risks of continuing on foot.

The split also brings the season’s parallel conflicts into focus. AMC described the season as following Carol’s fight to find Daryl and his struggle over whether to stay in France (AMC Networks’ season 2 announcement, June 6, 2024). The plane separates the group, but Daryl and Carol’s decision to travel together reflects a bond built over years. In an AMC Talk interview published October 7, 2024, Norman Reedus called their relationship “a real, earned relationship.”
What does the Rolling Stones song mean?
Earlier, Daryl gives Laurent a guitar and sings “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with him. The song’s title fits the finale’s uneasy compromise: the characters cannot secure the outcome they want for everyone. It is a thematic reading, not a literal explanation of the plot. Director Daniel Percival said Reedus suggested the song and described the scene as a farewell; it was among the last scenes Reedus filmed with Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, who plays Laurent (TV Insider’s interview with Percival).

Was Carol really seeing Sophia in the tunnel?
No. The episode presents Carol’s encounter with her dead daughter as a vision during the tunnel crossing, not as evidence that Sophia has returned. The vision can be read as a grief-centered confrontation—a symbolic goodbye that helps Carol continue forward—but the episode does not establish a supernatural explanation.
What causes the tunnel hallucinations?
The group’s visions happen during a bat-filled crossing through a damp tunnel contaminated with guano. Den of Geek’s finale analysis connects the imagery to guano, mold, and the tunnel environment. The episode does not confirm a precise medical diagnosis or identify a specific toxin, so the exact cause remains uncertain.

Where does the finale leave Daryl and Carol?
They are heading toward England with Fiona and Angus, but the crossing is still underway when the episode ends. The Channel Tunnel is a route toward England, not proof that they have reached safety. Laurent is away from the immediate threat; the eventual outcome for the people left behind remains open.
