There is no universal difference between Loge and Mezzanine: theaters use the labels differently. Loge may mean a separate level of box seats, a section beside another level, or even the first row of the Mezzanine. Before choosing tickets, check the specific venue’s seating chart, row and seat, view notes, and accessibility information.
What do “Loge” and “Mezzanine” mean?
Mezzanine generally names an elevated seating level, but a theater’s own terminology determines exactly where it is. Loge is even less consistent: one venue may use it for boxes, another for side sections, and another for a row within the mezzanine. These are venue labels, not a dependable seating hierarchy.
That difference matters when comparing tickets. A Loge seat is not automatically closer, more centered, or better than a Mezzanine seat. Check the map for the actual location rather than choosing by the section name alone.
How theaters use the labels
| Venue | Loge on the venue’s map or guide | Mezzanine on the venue’s map or guide | What that means for a ticket buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boch Center, Wang Theatre | Dress Circle (Loge): second-level box seats at the rear and sides above Orchestra. The Dress Circle is generally reserved for Boch Center members. | Third level above Orchestra. | Loge and Mezzanine are separate levels here. Boch Center seating FAQs. |
| Boch Center, Shubert Theatre | The FAQ identifies boxes separately and does not call them Loge. | Second level above Orchestra. | Do not assume the Wang Theatre’s labels apply to the Shubert. Boch Center seating FAQs. |
| Santa Fe Opera, Crosby Theatre | The first row of the Mezzanine. | The upper level, also known as the balcony. Its overhang begins above main-floor Row W. | Here, Loge is a row designation within the mezzanine, not a separate level. Crosby Theatre seat map. |
| Opera Colorado, Ellie Caulkins Opera House | A separately marked area. | A separately marked area. | The overview map is not to scale, and prices may vary by performance; use it to orient yourself, then check the specific ticket listing. Ellie Caulkins Opera House seat map. |
| San Diego Civic Theatre | Lower and Upper Loge sections are side areas over the Orchestra and Lower Loges. | Section above the Dress Circle. | The uppermost Balcony is above the Mezzanine; consult the venue’s map and access notes for the exact seat. Civic Theatre seating guide. |

- Row and distance: Identify the precise row and its position relative to the stage. Section names alone do not tell you how far away a seat is.
- Angle: A centered seat and a side seat in the same section can provide different views. Check the map’s orientation and the seat’s location.
- Overhang or obstruction: Look for overhang boundaries and any limited-view notice. Productions can use the stage differently, so a general map may not capture every sightline issue.
- Price and listing details: Compare the price for the performance you plan to attend and what the venue says that ticket includes. Opera Colorado notes that prices may vary by performance.
- Access route: Check stairs, wheelchair locations, companion seating, and the route to the seat—not just the section name.
- Seller: Use the venue’s official ticket channel or a seller it specifically authorizes.
No general statistic establishes that Loge or Mezzanine seats have better views, lower prices, or higher satisfaction. The best choice depends on the exact seats and the venue’s information.
Check accessibility and stairs for the exact seat
Access arrangements differ by building and section. Santa Fe Opera identifies wheelchair locations by zone and marks some locations—including the first-row Loge—as having no stairs. San Diego Civic Theatre says its Balcony requires stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Those examples cannot determine access at other venues, or for a different seat within the same theater. Check the venue’s current accessibility details and contact its box office if you need to confirm a route or seating arrangement. Santa Fe Opera seat map; San Diego Civic Theatre seating guide.

Use authorized ticket sellers
Ticketing rules are venue-specific. Santa Fe Opera says it is the only authorized seller for its performances and warns that it cannot guarantee, refund, or validate third-party tickets. San Diego Theatres lists its own site and Ticketmaster as authorized sellers for its venues. Confirm the approved seller on the relevant venue’s official website rather than assuming one seller rule applies everywhere. Santa Fe Opera seat map; San Diego Theatres Civic Theatre seating guide.

If you choose a distant upper-level seat and want to see fine stage details, binoculars are optional. San Diego Theatres recommends them for Civic Theatre Balcony patrons interested in costume, facial, and staging details. That is a venue-specific suggestion, not a requirement for Loge or Mezzanine seats generally. San Diego Civic Theatre seating guide.
