From the six-episode Sonic Christmas Blast to Paramount’s theatrical films, these are 13 major Sonic screen works ranked from least successful to strongest. This is an editorial selection, not an official franchise-wide count: brief promotional shorts, game prologues and web animations are outside its scope. The ranking weighs how each story uses Sonic and his supporting cast, how well its comedy and action fit its format, how distinct its world feels, and how easily a new or casual viewer can follow it.

The 13 Sonic movies and TV shows, ranked

13. Sonic Underground (1999)

Sonic Underground gives Sonic a very different premise: he has siblings, a family mystery and a musical identity. That makes the show unusually distinctive, but its ingredients do not always come together into a satisfying whole. The songs and melodramatic setup can be fun curiosities, yet they compete with the fast, funny adventure many viewers come to Sonic for. Its unusual concept earns it a place in the franchise conversation; its uneven balance puts it last here.

12. Sonic Christmas Blast (1996)

This Christmas special is best approached as a seasonal detour rather than a substantial Sonic story. The holiday setup gives it an easy entry point, but its short format leaves little room for the character development or larger adventure that could make it resonate beyond the occasion. It is a modestly entertaining extra for franchise completists, not the strongest first stop for someone looking for a Sonic series or film.

11. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993)

The broad, cartoonish approach of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog makes its priorities clear: quick jokes, energetic chases and a lighter take on the characters. That can make individual episodes easy to dip into, especially for younger viewers, but the gag-driven format offers less of the sustained story or distinctive character work found higher in this ranking. It is a useful snapshot of one early TV version of Sonic, rather than a definitive one.

  • Genre: Action / Adventure
  • Number of Discs: 1
  • Playback Duration: 220
  • Rating: PG
  • Number of Movies: 2

10. Sonic Drone Home (2022)

Sonic Drone Home is a short animated film tied to the modern movie era, so it has limited room to build a story. Its compact format makes it a quick extra for viewers already familiar with that version of Sonic, but it is not a substitute for a feature-length adventure. It ranks above the earlier entries here for its place in a clearly defined screen continuity, though its brevity caps what it can accomplish on story and character.

9. Sonic the Hedgehog (1996 OVA)

This Japanese two-part OVA offers a self-contained animated take on Sonic, with a more concentrated adventure than a long-running episodic series can provide. Its strongest appeal is its distinct look and the chance to see Sonic outside the Western TV continuities. The two-part structure can feel compressed, however, and its particular tone may be less immediately accessible to viewers who know Sonic mainly from the recent films. It is a worthwhile alternate interpretation, if not the best all-purpose introduction.

8. Sonic the Hedgehog (1993, “SatAM”)

Often called SatAM to distinguish it from the other Sonic titles, this 1993 series takes a more serialized, dramatic approach than Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The contrast is the point: it gives Sonic a different supporting world and a continuing conflict, rather than leaning chiefly on stand-alone comic situations. Its more serious tone makes it one of the franchise’s most distinctive TV adaptations, though viewers expecting the breezier comedy of the games or films may find it a less natural fit.

7. Sonic X (2003)

Sonic X brings Sonic into a longer anime adventure, giving it space to build a recurring cast and stretch its stories beyond a single episode. That scale is a strength when the plot is moving, but it also asks more patience than a short special or a feature film. Its particular interpretation of Sonic and its anime storytelling style make it an important branch of the screen franchise rather than a universal starting point. Viewers curious about Sonic in a sustained animated format have a lot more to explore here than in the specials.

Rank #3
Sonic the Hedgehog (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital)
  • Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk has English audio and subtitles.

6. Knuckles (2024)

This six-episode event series occupies a specific place in the live-action continuity: Paramount’s guide places it between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Its focus on Knuckles gives a supporting character more space than a feature film usually can, but it is not as Sonic-centered as the title of the overall franchise might lead newcomers to expect. It works best for viewers who want more of the film universe and its cast; as a standalone introduction to Sonic, it is less direct.

5. Sonic Prime (2022–2024)

Sonic Prime sends Sonic through the Shatterverse after Eggman causes a universe-shattering event, giving the series room to explore multiple versions of its world and characters. Netflix’s announcement described a 24-episode first season; that number was the announced season count, not a statement of the complete series’ final episode total. The multiverse premise brings visual and character variety, but it also makes the story more involved than a casual viewer may want from a quick Sonic watch. It ranks highly for ambition and a clear animated identity, just below the most accessible entries.

  • Star-Studded Cast – Features performances by Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey, Krysten Ritter, and Keanu Reeves.

  • Exclusive Bonus Content – Enjoy deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and a special feature with Dr. Robotnik.
  • Perfect for Fans and Collectors – A must-have addition to any Sonic collection, packed with action, humor, and heart.

4. Sonic Boom (2014–2017)

Sonic Boom stands out by making comedy its central engine. Its episodic approach and distinct version of the cast give the series an identity that does not depend on matching the tone of the games or the live-action films. That makes it a particularly easy pick for viewers who want a lighter animated Sonic, even if its comedy-first structure offers less of an ongoing adventure than Sonic Prime or Sonic X. A distributor catalog lists a first-season DVD volume, but that listing does not establish current retailer stock or that the volume contains the complete series.

3. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

The first Paramount theatrical film has the most straightforward job of any entry near the top: introduce a movie version of Sonic to viewers who may not know the animated series or games. Its live-action setting gives this adaptation a different texture from the animated shows, while the film format keeps the story accessible without requiring a franchise viewing order. It is the natural starting point for the modern theatrical continuity and a stronger all-round entry than the spin-offs or short-form works.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

The second film builds on the first movie’s world and makes the ensemble feel larger, giving Sonic’s allies and rivals more room in the adventure. That expanded cast adds energy, although it also makes the film less self-contained for someone who has not seen the 2020 installment. It earns the runner-up spot by developing the live-action series while keeping the action-forward, broadly accessible approach that makes these films a useful entry point.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes the top position because it is the strongest culmination of the modern film continuity in this selection: it can draw on the characters and story built across the earlier movies while still delivering a large-scale theatrical adventure. That makes it the least suitable of the top three as a first watch, but the most rewarding one after the first two films. In its January 22, 2025 announcement, SEGA reported the film at $425 million worldwide, compared with $405 million for the prior film; these are figures reported by SEGA in that announcement, not a live box-office tally.

Where the modern films and Knuckles fit

The live-action story order is Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), the six-episode Knuckles event series, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). Paramount’s guide describes the first three films as available on Paramount+, but streaming catalogs vary by country and can change, so check the service in your region. SEGA announced a March 19, 2027 theatrical date for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in January 2025; release schedules can change.

Which Sonic screen work should you start with?

  • For the live-action story: Start with the 2020 film and watch the films and Knuckles in continuity order.
  • For a comedy-led cartoon: Try Sonic Boom.
  • For a serialized animated adventure: Choose Sonic Prime for its multiverse premise or Sonic X for a longer anime-style run.
  • For a markedly different early TV interpretation: Compare the light, gag-driven Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog with the more dramatic SatAM.

These adaptations are separate interpretations, not chapters in one shared story. The ranking favors works that combine a clear identity with a compelling use of their format; the best choice for a particular viewer may depend on whether they want comedy, serialized animation or the modern film continuity.
