The series is a fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books—not a continuation of the earlier television show. Its first season is based on the third book, and Netflix confirmed a second season before the new series debuted.
Who is in Netflix’s Ingalls family?
Netflix’s cast guide identifies the four central family roles as:
- Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls
- Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls
- Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls
- Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls
Halsey is the new screen Laura; Melissa Gilbert played the character in the earlier television adaptation, according to the Associated Press.
What story does the new series tell?
Netflix says season one draws on Wilder’s third book, also titled Little House on the Prairie. The Ingalls family tries to establish a home near Independence, Kansas, amid hardships that include fever, wolves and fire. Netflix describes the series as family drama, a survival story and an origin story of the American West.

Showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine told Netflix, “This show is a love story about a family. They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with.” The adaptation therefore shares its source material with earlier screen versions, but it is a new telling rather than a sequel to the 1970s series. Netflix’s cast and series guide and the Associated Press both describe it as an adaptation of Wilder’s books.
How does it include Osage perspectives?
Netflix says the Ingalls encounter Osage people who have long called the prairie home, widening the story beyond the family’s settlement. The service’s account of a community screening says episode seven depicts the signing of the 1868 Drum Creek Treaty between the United States and the Osage Nation. That describes what Netflix says the episode portrays; it is not a complete history of the treaty.

Osage cultural consultant Julie O’Keefe told Netflix, “If you’re going to tell the story, then you need to tell both sides.” At the screening, Wahzhazhe Communications deputy director Russ Tallchief said, “Everyone involved in bringing this series to life acknowledged the importance of sharing both sides of the story, including the Wahzhazhe side of the story.” These are contributors’ descriptions of the show’s aims and process, not independent historical assessments. Is season two confirmed?
Yes. Netflix announced the renewal in July 2026, before season one debuted. The announcement also named Willa Dunn as Nellie Oleson, Charlotte Sullivan as Margaret Oleson and Rachelle Lefevre as Eva Beadle. Netflix’s announcement did not give a release date, so none is confirmed here. The season-one guide says the first season is streaming; availability can vary by territory and change. How the books and screen versions differ in scope
The central distinction is not just a new actor in Laura’s role. Netflix says its adaptation expands the perspectives represented in Wilder’s story, including those of Osage characters, while the season-one plot still follows the Ingalls family’s attempt to make a life on the prairie. The Associated Press likewise reports that the series places the family’s search for land and opportunity alongside encounters with Osage neighbors and the politics of land ownership and treaties. Those are descriptions of the adaptation’s framing, not a substitute for a full historical account.
Netflix says the book series has sold more than 73 million copies in more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages; these are figures Netflix published in 2026. The same Netflix article attributes 13.25 billion viewing minutes in 2024 to the 1974 television show. That figure is viewing time, not a count of viewers and not a measure of the new adaptation’s audience. See Netflix’s 2026 announcement for the figures.
