X-Men ’97 is a continuation, not a reboot: it picks up the world of X-Men: The Animated Series and gives its familiar characters room to move forward. Its strongest case for existing is that it treats nostalgia as a starting point for a new story, rather than as a reason to reproduce the old show unchanged. The result is best suited to returning fans, but the central premise is clear enough for newcomers to follow.
Is X-Men ’97 a continuation or a reboot?
It is a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, the cartoon that ran from 1992 to 1997. Marvel framed the 2024 series as a return to that era, with refreshed designs and a new story—not an unrelated adaptation of the X-Men. The distinction matters: the revival draws on the characters and world viewers remember while asking what happens next.

Marvel lead character artist Amelia Vidal described the design approach as being made “with so much love, care, and consideration for the original show that aired between 1992 and 1997.” That is the creative intention; whether every updated design works is a matter of taste. The result aims for recognition without freezing the characters in the visual style of the 1990s.
What is the story about?
The series centers on mutants protecting a world that hates and fears them. Marvel’s official description names Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, Morph, Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Bishop, Nightcrawler, and Magneto among its central characters. That premise gives the show its familiar tension: the team’s extraordinary abilities make them defenders, while prejudice makes their place in society precarious.

Season one consists of 10 episodes and premiered on Disney+ on March 20, 2024. Its short season makes the revival a more manageable commitment than the original series, which ran from 1992 to 1997.
Does the revival feel like a real next step?
The key test for a continuation is whether familiarity serves character and story, rather than becoming the whole point. X-Men ’97 is built around a recognizable ensemble, so its appeal depends on the relationships among those characters as much as on the action. For returning viewers, the pleasure is seeing an established world in motion again; for new viewers, the team’s competing responsibilities and the hostility around them provide a straightforward way into the premise.
Rank #2
The series’ updated presentation follows the same balance. It preserves the identity of the original designs while refreshing them for a new production. That approach is more compelling than a frame-for-frame imitation would be, though viewers attached to one precise version of the 1990s look may prefer the original. The revival’s aim is evolution, not visual replication.
Do you need to watch the original first?
No. The continuation rewards familiarity with the earlier show, but the basic setup—a team of mutants trying to protect people who fear them—does not require a viewer to catch up on all 76 episodes before starting. Newcomers can begin with X-Men ’97; those who want more context can watch the original series first or alongside it.

What to read after the season
For an optional comic companion, X-Men ’97: Great X-Pectations collects issues #1–4 of the official prelude comic. Written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Salva Espin, it was created in collaboration with the show’s producers. It is additional context, not a prerequisite for watching the series. Marvel’s listing for the paperback has the collection details.
Marvel has also published a Season 2 reading guide that includes an X-Men ’97: Season Two comic described as leading from the first season’s ending toward the upcoming television season. That establishes a comic connection, not a television release date. Read Marvel’s guide.
