Its alien encounter and Deepcore mission are fictional, but real liquid-breathing research and underwater exploration helped inspire the film’s imagery and premise.
What parts of The Abyss are fictional?
The film’s main characters, the Deepcore underwater mission and its encounters with extraterrestrials are inventions. Cameron later acknowledged that he prioritized the story over technical accuracy. In a 2014 National Geographic interview, he said, “I bent the facts to fit the story,” adding that he would make a film about deep-sea work adhere more closely to how it is actually done.
That distinction matters: the film draws on the look and ideas of underwater exploration, but its central events are not presented as a record of a real expedition.
What real ideas inspired the film?
Liquid breathing research
According to the American Film Institute Catalog, Cameron conceived the story as a high-school student after a science lecture about a liquid-oxygenated saline solution that might let animals breathe liquid. The film’s rat scene was also grounded in a real research topic: AFI reports that a liquid fluorocarbon was used and that the rat survived.

This inspiration does not establish that people can safely breathe liquid. The documented basis is research involving animals and the film’s rat scene, not an established human practice.
Underwater exploration technology
Cameron recalled seeing 1986 news footage of the Jason Jr. submersible in a test pool and identified it as one source of inspiration in an interview with Scientific American. He also said that making the film involved developing equipment such as camera systems, diver propulsion vehicles and underwater lights.

The movie later helped connect Cameron with real deep-ocean practitioners. In the same 2014 National Geographic interview, he said making The Abyss brought him into contact with the “real deep-ocean community.” That influence shaped his later interest in ocean exploration; it does not make the film’s fictional encounter factual.
How was the underwater world filmed?
The deep-sea setting was created in controlled studio tanks rather than on the ocean floor. AFI reports that 40 percent of filming took place underwater in two tanks at Cherokee Studios in Gaffney, South Carolina. The larger tank held 7.5 million gallons of water and the second held 2.5 million gallons. Production notes cited by AFI place underwater filming at depths of up to 55 feet, and the actors trained as divers.

Those production details explain why the film can feel like an expedition while remaining a constructed movie set. They describe the filming conditions, not the depth of a real Deepcore mission.

The Abyss: Special Edition is a director-approved extended cut that restores nearly half an hour removed from the original release, according to AFI. Restored scenes add political context to the U.S.–Soviet tension, while the extended ending provides more information about the aliens’ mission. The added material develops the fictional story; it does not turn the film into a true account.
