Netflix’s Nonnas is based on Joe Scaravella’s real decision to open Enoteca Maria, a Staten Island restaurant where grandmothers cooked family recipes. The film draws on that true premise, but its named nonna characters and their stories are fictionalized—not documentary portraits of the restaurant’s real cooks.
Is Nonnas based on a true story?
Yes. The central idea is real: Scaravella opened Enoteca Maria in 2007 to give grandmothers a place to cook and share the food traditions they had learned from their families. Netflix’s official editorial guide says that after his grandmother Domenica died in 1999, he missed her home cooking. He named the restaurant for his mother, Maria. TIME’s May 9, 2025 interview describes the film’s relationship to the real story.
That makes the movie a dramatization based on a real restaurant and its founding idea, not a documentary or a literal biography of every character.
What was the real Enoteca Maria?
Enoteca Maria’s defining feature was its cooks: grandmothers making recipes rooted in their own family and regional traditions. The restaurant began with Italian nonnas and later welcomed grandmothers from around the world. CBS New York described the rotating schedule of Italian and international cooks in a January 2018 report. The organization’s current history says its international expansion began in 2015 and that cooks representing more than 50 regions have participated over time.

Scaravella has described the idea as cultural exchange rather than simply a place to eat. In TIME’s May 2025 interview, he said: “This is not a restaurant. It walks like a restaurant, smells like a restaurant, talks like a restaurant, but it’s not a restaurant. It’s a cultural exchange.”
Who were the real nonnas?
TIME names three of the restaurant’s first real cooks: Carmelina Pica, Adelina Orazzo, and Teresa Scalici. They were real people who cooked at Enoteca Maria; their lives should not be conflated with the fictionalized character arcs in the film. TIME reports that the movie’s nonna characters were inspired by women Scaravella knew, but fictionalized for the story.

The film was directed by Stephen Chbosky and written by Liz Maccie, according to the Associated Press review. Netflix’s guide identifies Vince Vaughn as Scaravella and lists the actors playing the film’s nonnas.
How to explore the real cooks’ stories and food
For recipes and reminiscences from the real restaurant, Scaravella’s cookbook Nonna’s House: Cooking and Reminiscing with the Italian Grandmothers of Enoteca Maria is a documented option. TIME says it features the original grandmothers as well as other cooks from Enoteca Maria. It offers a different experience from the film: recipes and accounts connected to the real cooks, rather than dramatized character stories.

Can you visit the real Enoteca Maria?
TIME reported in May 2025 that Enoteca Maria was near the Staten Island Ferry terminal and that reservations were made by phone. That information is historical, not confirmation of present-day hours or booking arrangements. The organization’s current site describes Nonnas of the World Community as a nonprofit carrying forward the former restaurant’s mission. Confirm the current status, address, hours, and booking process directly with the official organization before making plans.

Nonnas of the World Community reported that the film drew 15.3 million views in its first three days and 33.3 million in its first ten days in May 2025. Those are figures reported by the organization, not independently verified figures or numbers attributed here to Netflix.
