Live captioning displays spoken words as text while viewers watch a YouTube livestream. You can use YouTube’s automatic captions when they are available, or supply captions through compatible encoding or captioning software. Automatic captions are English-only in YouTube’s documented workflow, require normal latency, and may not be available to every channel.
How YouTube Live captions work
Closed captions are a visual display of a program’s audio. For a livestream, they can be generated by YouTube or supplied by the creator, an encoder, or a captioning service. The choice affects availability, control, and setup.
| Decision | YouTube automatic captions | Supplied captions |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Channel must have the feature; YouTube’s documented live workflow is English-only and requires normal latency. | Requires compatible encoding or captioning software and a configured caption source. |
| Control | YouTube generates text from the audio; recognition can be affected by audio quality, overlapping speakers, and language. | Captions are sent through embedded caption data or a caption feed. |
| Setup | Enable the option for each stream in YouTube Studio. | Configure the encoder or software; a caption feed may require broadcast delay and a signed URL handoff. |
| Replay | YouTube generates captions again during its VOD process, and they may differ from live captions. | Archive behavior can vary by workflow; check the recording and its captions separately. |
Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube documents automatic live captions as an English-language option for eligible channels streaming at normal latency. It is enabled per stream, not once for the whole channel. YouTube describes availability as a gradual rollout; its help guidance mentions channels with more than 1,000 subscribers in troubleshooting, but that is not a guarantee that the option will appear for every channel at that size. Check your own Live Control Room settings.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live.
- Choose Stream and open the stream settings.
- Turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source and select the video language.
- Check the live preview to confirm captions appear before relying on them for an event.
Labels and availability can change. If the caption source is missing, use YouTube’s current live caption guidance and check the settings available to your channel.

Use professional or supplied captions
For events that need a more controlled caption workflow, YouTube supports captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or a feed sent by supported software to a signed HTTP ingestion URL. Confirm compatibility and test the complete setup before the event.
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream setup, enable Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder to provide EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data.
- Test the stream and check that the captions reach YouTube and appear in the preview.
Although the 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, YouTube currently supports one caption track for this embedded workflow. See YouTube’s live caption requirements for current setup guidance.

Caption feed through supported software
- In the stream’s Advanced settings, add a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay as directed by YouTube’s event caption instructions.
- Turn on Closed captions in the stream setup.
- Copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL and provide it to the captioner for entry into supported software.
- Test the feed before going live. YouTube specifies one caption feed per stream entry point.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as examples of captioning software. The help page specifies minimum versions for some products: Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later, Case CATalyst BCS 14.52 or later, and CaptionMaker 5.22 or later. Software support can change, so confirm current compatibility and operating instructions with the vendor. YouTube also recommends keeping the computer’s system clock accurate and checking whether antivirus software interferes with the captioning application.
Choose latency with captions and interaction in mind
Latency is the delay between the event being captured and its display to viewers. YouTube’s documented automatic-caption workflow requires normal latency.

| Latency mode | YouTube’s guidance | Caption consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Best suited to non-interactive streams; least buffering and support for all resolutions and live features. | Required by the documented automatic live-caption workflow. |
| Low | For limited interaction; most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency, according to YouTube’s typical guidance. | Does not meet the normal-latency requirement for the documented automatic-caption workflow. |
| Ultra-low | For highly interactive streams; most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency in YouTube’s typical guidance, with potentially more buffering. | Does not meet the normal-latency requirement for the documented automatic-caption workflow. |
The low- and ultra-low figures are typical descriptions, not guaranteed service levels. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not let the creator choose a latency setting. Read YouTube’s latency guidance before choosing a mode for an event that depends on captions.
Improve caption readability before the event
Automatic captions can fail or become difficult to follow when speech is not recognized. YouTube identifies poor audio, overlapping speakers, unsupported speech languages, and multiple languages spoken at once as possible causes. A microphone is optional, not a caption requirement, and better equipment cannot guarantee recognition accuracy.

- Test speech and movement similar to the planned event, then listen for clear speech in the stream audio.
- Check the caption source, selected video language, and captions in the preview.
- Reduce avoidable background noise and overlapping speech where possible.
- Confirm the chosen latency setting works with the caption method you intend to use.
- If automatic captions are unavailable or unsuitable, test a supported professional-caption workflow before the event.
YouTube’s stream setup and testing guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Clear captured speech may help in the specific cases where audio quality is interfering with recognition, but it does not make automatic captions error-free.

Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates captions again through its VOD process, and those captions may differ from what viewers saw live. Review the archived video and its captions after the event, and correct them if needed. For externally supplied workflows, verify the resulting recording separately; YouTube’s guidance does not establish one archive outcome for every setup.

Troubleshoot captions that are missing or inaccurate
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic captions are not an available option | The feature may not yet be available to the channel, or the stream setup may not meet its documented conditions. | Inspect the current Live Control Room settings. The documented workflow is English-only and requires normal latency; rollout status varies. |
| Captions do not appear during the stream | Low or ultra-low latency, unsupported language, or a per-stream setting that was not enabled. | Check latency, language, and that Closed captions and Automatic captions are enabled for this stream. |
| Captions are incomplete or wrong | Poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, or multiple languages spoken at once. | Listen to the actual stream audio, improve clarity where possible, and avoid overlapping speech. Use a professional workflow if accuracy needs exceed what automatic recognition can provide. |
| Professional caption feed does not connect | Incorrect signed URL handoff, software compatibility issue, inaccurate system clock, or interference from antivirus software. | Recheck the URL and software configuration with the captioner or vendor, verify clock accuracy, and check for software interference. |
| Replay captions differ from live captions | YouTube creates captions again during the VOD process. | Review the archived video and its captions after the event rather than assuming the live text is preserved. |
Keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running
Live captioning is separate from keeping a channel live around the clock. If your YouTube stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and the stream can keep going with your computer off. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it has automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
