A black screen usually means the picture is missing at a particular point in the path from your local video file, through streaming software such as OBS, to YouTube. Compare the file’s local playback, the encoder’s scene preview, and the YouTube Live Control Room preview; the first place the picture disappears tells you what to check next. If YouTube replaces the picture with a placeholder after the stream begins, check YouTube Studio for a copyright notice.

First, locate where the picture disappears

A video file on your computer does not automatically become the picture in a YouTube live broadcast. Streaming software must include it in the scene being sent to YouTube, and the encoder must connect to the correct stream. Check the three stages below before changing settings.

  1. Play the file locally. Confirm that it opens and shows a picture on the computer.
  2. Check the streaming software preview. In OBS, look at the preview for the scene intended for the live output.
  3. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that you are viewing the current or scheduled event you intend to stream.

If the local file plays but the OBS preview is black, focus on the scene and media source. If OBS shows the picture but YouTube does not, check the stream connection and event. If YouTube initially receives the picture and later shows a placeholder or interruption, check for a copyright notice. This sequence follows the documented path from encoder to YouTube and YouTube’s separate guidance on detected third-party content (YouTube live streaming setup; YouTube live-stream copyright guidance).

If OBS’s preview is black

Check the scene and media source before changing YouTube settings. OBS documents Media Source as the source type for adding a media file to a scene, and its source controls determine visibility and layering (OBS media sources; OBS sources guide).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Select the intended scene. Make sure OBS is previewing the scene you want to broadcast, not a different scene without the video.
  2. Confirm the Media Source and file. In the Sources dock, check that the scene contains a Media Source pointing to the intended local file. If the file was moved or renamed, the saved path may no longer work.
  3. Check visibility. Ensure the source’s eye icon is enabled. A hidden source will not appear in the scene.
  4. Check source order and coverage. OBS layers sources: a visible, opaque source above the video can cover it. Move the video above sources that should not obscure it, or hide the covering source.
  5. Test playback outside OBS. If the source is present and visible but its picture is still missing, play the file locally to check that it opens and displays correctly.

OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the video formats supported by Media Source. A listed extension alone does not prove that a particular file is intact or that its codecs will decode properly on your system. If a file plays locally but not in OBS, the available format list does not by itself identify the cause.

Using a playlist instead of one file

OBS provides a VLC Video source for playlists. That source requires VLC to be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This requirement applies to the VLC Video source, not to every Media Source or local file.

If OBS shows the picture but YouTube is black

When the encoder preview is correct, the video source is reaching OBS; check what OBS is sending and which YouTube event is receiving it. YouTube’s setup guidance explains that the stream key lets the encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept. Do not share the key: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream.

  1. Verify the destination and key in the encoder. Check that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube stream and that its server or stream URL and stream key are correct.
  2. Verify the event. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the current or scheduled event that matches the encoder’s destination. A preview of another event will not show the feed you expect.
  3. Wait for and inspect the YouTube preview. Check whether the picture appears there before starting the event. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and monitoring stream quality during the broadcast (YouTube live streaming setup; YouTube stream health and quality).
  4. Read stream-health messages. Use any warning in Live Control Room to guide the next check rather than assuming the local file format is unsupported.

A black playback window by itself does not establish that a file format is unsupported. The comparison between OBS’s preview and YouTube’s preview is more useful: it shows whether the picture is already missing before the encoder sends the stream or disappears on the way to YouTube.

If YouTube shows a placeholder or interrupts the stream

YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. When it identifies such content, a placeholder image may replace the live stream; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning and follow the notice’s resolution process rather than trying to bypass detection. If you have a license, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist (YouTube live-stream copyright guidance).

This copyright case is different from an OBS preview that is black from the start: when a placeholder appears after content has been sent, check Studio for a notice instead of assuming the local source has failed.
