A product walkthrough can support evaluation; an explainer can teach; a social clip can earn attention and send interested viewers to a useful page; and a webinar can handle a topic that needs more depth.
Start with the buyer’s question, not the video format
Before scripting or filming, identify what a buyer needs to understand at a particular stage: a problem, a product workflow, a point of comparison, or a next step. Then choose a format and destination that make answering that question easy. A polished brand film is not a content strategy by itself; a set of useful videos can serve distinct jobs across the buyer journey.
Wistia’s 2026 State of Video report identifies product, educational, social, and webinar videos among the formats teams are emphasizing. Its findings are directional benchmarks: Wistia says the report surveyed more than 900 professionals and analyzed over 13 million videos and 79 million hours of viewing data on its platform. That is substantial vendor data, not a controlled study of SaaS revenue or a census of all marketers, so use it to inform choices rather than predict results. Read Wistia’s 2026 report.
Which types of videos work for SaaS?
“Work” depends on the buyer’s need and the action you want to support. Treat formats as complementary, not as a universal ranking.

| Format | Buyer job | Good places to use it | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product walkthrough | Understand a workflow, outcome, or feature during evaluation | Relevant product page, feature page, or sales-support page | Plays and retention; clicks to the next step; demo requests or other qualified actions |
| Educational explainer | Learn how to solve a problem or understand a concept | A useful article, resource page, or dedicated video page when the video is the main content | Engagement, useful onward clicks, and actions tied to the article’s purpose |
| Social clip | Encounter one helpful idea in a short, self-contained piece | Social channels suited to the audience, with a relevant site link when useful | Engagement and qualified visits to the destination page |
| Webinar or replay | Explore a complex topic, see a product in context, or join a deeper session | Registration page, live event, follow-up email, and on-demand resource page | Registrations, attendance, engagement, next-step clicks, and qualified follow-up |
Product walkthroughs
Show the task or outcome a target buyer cares about, rather than reciting a feature list. Keep the next step clear—for example, visiting a relevant feature page or requesting a demo. Update the walkthrough when product changes make its interface or claims inaccurate. Wistia reports that teams regard product videos as impactful, but each company still needs to check its own performance.
Educational explainers
Answer a question the audience already has, and make the video useful on its own as well as in context. An embedded explainer can strengthen a relevant article; a dedicated watch page makes more sense when the video itself is the page’s primary purpose.
Social clips
Cut a larger demo, talk, or webinar into self-contained ideas. Reframe the edit for the destination, including its aspect ratio, and provide enough context that a clip still makes sense on its own. Wistia’s 2026 survey reports that teams commonly adapt video size by platform and that 60% used social clips to link back to their websites. The 60% is a reported tactic, not evidence of traffic or conversion lift.

Webinars and replays
Use a webinar when the subject benefits from a longer explanation, a demonstration, or live interaction. Plan its afterlife before the event: provide a useful replay, identify sections that can become clips, and keep the page and follow-up relevant after the live date. Wistia reports that on-demand webinar plays can continue for up to 12 months after an event in its data; that is a finding, not a guaranteed lifespan for any replay.
Where should product videos go?
Place a video at the point where it answers a visitor’s likely question. A feature walkthrough belongs near an explanation of that feature; a product overview may fit a product page or a sales-support page. Match the surrounding headline and call to action to what the video actually shows.
Wistia’s platform data reports comparatively high play rates on homepages, video galleries, and product pages. That association does not mean those placements will perform best for every audience. Compare play and downstream action on your own pages, and do not put a video above the fold merely because a benchmark favors a particular page category.

Choose the destination based on intent. If visitors are primarily there to read an article, the video is supporting material. If the page exists mainly to present one video, give it a dedicated URL, descriptive title, and accurate description. Avoid making a video difficult to find behind an interaction that search crawlers cannot see.
How to distribute and repurpose SaaS videos
Use the channel that fits both the audience and the format. Wistia’s 2026 survey reports that 81% of surveyed teams shared video on LinkedIn and 76% on YouTube. Those figures describe reported use, not universal performance or proof that either channel will drive results for every SaaS company.
- Make one useful source video. Build a product demo, educational session, or webinar around a clear buyer question and an intended next action.
- Identify distinct moments. Select segments that deliver a complete idea without relying on context viewers will not have in the clip.
- Adapt the edit. Reframe for the destination, add accurate captions, and check that on-screen text remains readable at the intended size. Captions and transcripts also help people who cannot or do not want to listen to audio.
- Choose the destination link. Send viewers to the page that extends the clip’s idea, not automatically to the homepage. Use a site link when it adds a useful next step.
- Review results by channel and purpose. Compare engagement and qualified visits for clips, and actions such as demo requests for product videos. Do not treat raw views as interchangeable across channels.
Wistia’s survey says 48% of respondents planned to increase video-promotion budgets in 2026, referring to plans stated in its 2026 report about the following year. This is an intention, not a record of actual spending or evidence that increasing spend causes growth.

How do I measure video marketing ROI?
Set the business objective before selecting the metric. A video meant to explain a workflow should not be judged by the same immediate action as a social clip intended to earn a qualified site visit. Separate attention, engagement, and business outcomes so a high view count does not conceal weak follow-through.
| Objective | Useful measures | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Help visitors notice and play a page video | Play rate: plays as a share of page visitors or video impressions, using a consistent definition | Shows whether the placement and invitation to play attract attention; it does not show whether viewers understood or converted |
| Hold attention | Retention, completion, and where viewers leave | Finds sections that may need a clearer opening or tighter edit; compare like formats and audiences |
| Bring relevant people to a page | Social engagement, link clicks, and qualified site visits | Distinguishes interaction from visits that match the intended audience |
| Support evaluation or conversion | CTA clicks, form completions, demo requests, and conversion assists | Connects the video to a next action; attribution does not by itself establish that the video caused it |
| Assess downstream business contribution | Lead quality and pipeline influence linked to CRM or email data, where available | Provides context beyond views, but requires reliable tracking and careful attribution |
Wistia lists view counts, conversion assists, and social engagement among the measures marketers commonly use. It also reports that fewer than half connect their video platform to CRM or email marketing tools. Where the systems allow it, connect viewing and click activity to later lead quality and pipeline outcomes. Treat “influenced” as a contribution signal, not automatic proof of causation: sales cycles have multiple touchpoints, and viewers who watch more may already be more engaged.
Run a focused comparison
When a video underperforms, change one meaningful variable at a time—such as the thumbnail, page placement, opening hook, or call to action—and compare the same outcome over a suitable period. Keep the audience and measurement definition as consistent as practical. This is a useful testing approach, not a claim that Wistia’s report conducted such an experiment.

Make video pages discoverable and usable
Google Search Central says videos can appear in several Search experiences and recommends helping Google find videos, ensuring they can be indexed, enabling supported video features, and monitoring performance. Google’s guidance states: “If you have videos on your site, following these video SEO best practices can help more people find your site through video results on Google.” See Google’s Video SEO Best Practices.
- Make the video discoverable in the page’s HTML. Google can find references in common elements such as
<video>,<iframe>,<embed>, and<object>; do not rely on a user action to load the video. - For video features, ensure the page is indexed, the video is embedded and visible, and a valid thumbnail is available at a stable URL.
- Use accurate, consistent titles and descriptions. Google supports structured data, video sitemaps, and Open Graph metadata; metadata should represent the actual video.
- Consider a dedicated watch page when a single video is the page’s main purpose. An ordinary article with a supporting embedded video is not thereby a watch page.
- Use captions and, where practical, a transcript to make the content easier to follow and reuse. Do not assume captions alone settle accessibility or legal requirements.
For longer videos, Google’s VideoObject documentation describes Clip and SeekToAction markup for key moments. For YouTube-hosted videos, timestamps and labels in the description can also help Google identify key moments. These options can help viewers navigate, but do not guarantee a rich result.
Choose length by intent, not a universal rule
There is no single ideal duration for every SaaS video. Make a social clip long enough to deliver one complete idea; give a product walkthrough the time needed to show its important workflow; use a webinar when the audience benefits from depth. Wistia’s 2026 report finds that longer videos can have higher click rates in its data, but that association may reflect self-selection by highly engaged viewers. It is not a reason to make every marketing video longer.
Build a practical SaaS video program
- Choose a buyer question. Start with a question that appears in support conversations, sales calls, product evaluation, or audience research.
- Define the intended action. Decide whether the viewer should understand a concept, visit a relevant page, register, request a demo, or take another measurable step.
- Pick format and destination together. Match a walkthrough, explainer, clip, or webinar to the question and put it where the audience can use it.
- Plan for maintenance and reuse. Note which product screens, claims, and links may need updating. Identify sections that can become standalone clips or an on-demand resource.
- Publish accessibly and accurately. Check captions, transcript availability where practical, thumbnail stability, metadata, links, and page visibility.
- Measure the next action. Review play and retention alongside clicks, forms, demo requests, or qualified follow-up according to the video’s job.
- Use results to make one improvement. Adjust a meaningful element, then assess whether the intended outcome changed without claiming causation from a simple before-and-after comparison.
