To add closed captions to a live stream, send synchronized text to the platform through its built-in speech recognition, a compatible caption feed, or a human CART captioner. The right route depends on the destination, language, latency, format, and whether viewers need editable captions or a human-produced service. Test the actual stream and player before the event: a caption option being enabled does not prove that viewers will see captions.
What live closed captions do—and what they do not
Captions present meaningful audio as synchronized text. Useful captions can identify speakers and convey significant sounds, not just transcribe spoken words. Closed captions can be switched on or off in a compatible player; open captions are burned into the picture and remain visible.
W3C WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 says, “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” That criterion is accessibility guidance, not a determination of what legal obligations apply to a specific event. Requirements can depend on the event, location, platform, and distribution method.
Live captioning also differs from preparing subtitles for a finished documentary. There is little opportunity to correct text before it appears, so microphone quality, speech overlap, language support, synchronization, and the live workflow all matter.

Choose a captioning workflow
| Approach | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Platform-native automatic speech recognition (ASR) | The platform offers automatic captions for the event’s language and latency, and automated text is appropriate. | Availability for your account and stream type, language, latency mode, audio conditions, duration allowance, archive behavior, and simulcast coverage. |
| Third-party caption feed or delivery software | A captioner or speech-to-text source needs to send text into the platform through a supported route. | Ingest protocol, supported caption format, feed and track limits, synchronization, signed URL handling, software compatibility, and viewer display. |
| Human CART | A human captioner and a service tailored to the event are needed. | Captioner availability, preparation and specialist vocabulary, integration, latency, geography, cost, backup plan, and in-player display. |
| Cloud stream-processing captions | You control an HLS or DASH pipeline and want generated captions or translations in its output. | Supported location and language, output format, synchronization, total latency, pipeline complexity, and downstream player support. |
Compare accuracy assurance and opportunities to correct errors; caption-to-audio synchrony and total stream delay; language; platform integration and format; viewer controls; simulcast destinations; and whether captions can be retained or edited after the event. No universal accuracy figure is established for these options.
How to add captions to YouTube Live
Use YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube documents automatic live captions as English-only, with availability being rolled out to qualifying channels. The feature is documented for normal-latency streams, not low- or ultra-low-latency streams. That documentation does not guarantee that a particular channel has access to it.
Poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages can prevent captions from appearing. Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the event; the later VOD caption process generates new automatic captions, which may differ. Review generated captions where possible. See YouTube’s live automatic captioning guidance.

Send a separate caption feed
YouTube also documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and a separate caption-feed workflow that uses a signed HTTP ingestion URL. Its documentation names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as software or services supported for that workflow. YouTube states that each stream entry point has one caption feed and that this workflow supports one caption track. Confirm that your encoder, caption source, and chosen format match the current platform requirements in YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Use CART captions in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft describes Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) as a trained captioner listening and rendering speech as text. The captioner connects compatible captioning software through the Teams CART Captions API; Microsoft states, “The CART software you use needs to connect through the Microsoft Teams CART Captions API.”
- In Teams, have the meeting organizer create the CART caption link using the documented CART setup.
- Send that link to the captioner so they can connect using compatible software and the Teams CART Captions API.
- Arrange the handoff and technical check with the captioner before the event, not at its start.
- During the meeting, verify that participants can see the CART captions. When CART is enabled, Teams users can switch between CART and automatically generated captions.
Follow Microsoft’s current Teams captions and CART guidance for the organizer workflow and interface. Microsoft recommends clear speech directed into the microphone, low background noise, avoiding overlapping speakers, and using the highest-quality available certified equipment. Greater distance from the microphone can reduce caption accuracy; these steps improve conditions but do not guarantee a particular result. See Microsoft’s real-time caption suggestions.

Generate captions in an HLS or DASH pipeline
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documents AI-generated captions and translations for HLS and DASH live streams. For embedded captions distributed to endpoints, its documentation describes CEA-608 or CEA-708 text streams. Language availability depends on location, so confirm the current supported location-and-language matrix when designing the workflow.
Caption timing is a latency choice. Google explains that synchronous display reduces the gap between audio and text but increases end-to-end media latency. Check both caption synchronization and the total delay viewers experience. Start with the Google Cloud Live Stream API caption documentation and test the resulting stream in the player your audience will use.

Vimeo live-event captions and simulcasts
Vimeo documents optional automatic closed captions for live events in English, French, Spanish, German, and Brazilian Portuguese, with one selected caption language per event. The documentation lists two hours per year for Premium and Advanced accounts and 30 hours per year for Enterprise accounts, but it also says that beginning June 1, 2026, live caption hours migrate to AI credits. Check the current account interface and allowance rather than relying on the older hour figures.

Vimeo documents enhanced speech detection and an event vocabulary field for up to 50 words, which can help with names and technical terms. Captions are saved with the archived event and can be downloaded as WebVTT for editing. They do not appear at other simulcast destinations. HLS delivery can expose generated captions to third-party HLS-compatible players. Caption display is available on the event page or embedded player, not the low-resolution preview player. Verify the current details in Vimeo’s live automatic captioning guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will captions carry over when you simulcast?
Do not assume they will. Caption delivery is often tied to a particular platform’s stream entry point, player, and ingest workflow. Vimeo explicitly says its automatic captions do not appear at other simulcast destinations. YouTube’s caption feed limits apply to its documented stream entry point and workflow; they do not establish that a different destination will receive the same captions.
For every destination, confirm the caption source, transport, format, language, display controls, and archive behavior. Then watch a real end-to-end test on each destination, including any embedded player you will publish.

Preflight the caption workflow
- Confirm the destination and stream mode. Record the platform, player, latency setting, simulcast destinations, and whether the event will be archived.
- Choose a source and language. Confirm that native ASR is available for the account and stream, or book a CART captioner and arrange the technical handoff.
- Match the delivery method. Check ingest URL or API, caption format, feed and track limits, and whether the destination accepts the caption source you plan to use.
- Prepare the audio and vocabulary. Use a close, clear microphone signal, reduce room noise and cross-talk, and provide names or specialist terms where the platform supports it.
- Test the viewer experience. Check caption timing, readability, language, viewer controls, each simulcast player, and the archive output. Test the actual endpoint, not only an encoder or producer preview.
- Agree on recovery. For human CART, confirm who to contact and what happens if the captioner or connection drops. For automated feeds, decide how to identify and restore an interrupted feed.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube automatic captions | The channel is not included in the rollout; the stream uses low or ultra-low latency; language or audio conditions are unsupported. | Confirm current channel availability, normal-latency mode, English speech, clean audio, and limited speaker overlap. |
| Separate caption feed is missing or delayed | Wrong stream entry point, feed format mismatch, timing issue, software interference, or system clock drift. | Recheck the signed ingestion URL and supported format, verify the system clock, review antivirus interference, and test a viewer-facing endpoint. |
| CART captions do not appear in Teams | The CART link/API handoff was not completed or the captioner is not connected through compatible software. | Have the organizer and captioner verify the link and API connection before the event; use Microsoft’s setup guidance. |
| Text lags behind speech | Caption processing or stream delivery adds delay, or synchronization is configured differently from the media path. | Measure caption-to-audio timing in the actual player and adjust the stream workflow; in Google Cloud, synchronous display reduces the text/audio gap but increases total media latency. |
| Captions appear on the main event but not a simulcast | The destination does not receive or display the source platform’s captions. | Verify delivery independently for that destination; Vimeo says its automatic captions are not sent to other simulcast destinations. |
| Captions are absent from the archive or differ from live text | The platform does not retain live ASR, or creates a separate VOD caption track. | Check the platform’s archive workflow and review or edit the post-event caption file separately. |
What about Twitch captions?
Twitch’s help search result refers to adding real-time closed captions through broadcasting software and a Closed Captioning OBS Plugin, but the help page body is not available in the cited material. Before relying on that route, verify current plugin availability and maintenance, supported caption source, and how captions appear in Twitch playback. Do not treat the search-result reference alone as confirmation that a particular setup works today.
Keep a YouTube video stream running separately from captioning
Captions and stream continuity are separate jobs: a 24/7 video loop does not by itself provide captions. If your documentary channel needs a prerecorded video running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option that plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
To start, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Are live automatic captions the same as CART?
No. Automatic speech recognition generates text with software; CART uses a human captioner listening and producing text.
Do live captions guarantee legal compliance?
No. A platform feature is not proof of compliance; applicable obligations depend on the event, geography, platform, and distribution context.
