For YouTube Live, 16:9 is the conventional horizontal format, while 9:16 is the portrait format for vertical mobile viewing. You can stream in both formats under one live event: YouTube Live Control Room does this by default, using a center crop of the horizontal picture for the vertical version unless you choose a different layout. The key distinction is that aspect ratio describes a frame’s shape; resolution describes its pixel dimensions.
Aspect ratio and resolution are different
An aspect ratio compares a frame’s width with its height. A 1920×1080 image and a 1280×720 image are both 16:9: the first has more pixels, but the same landscape shape. A 9:16 frame is portrait. Changing an encoder’s resolution does not, by itself, recompose a landscape scene as portrait.
YouTube’s standard computer-player shape is 16:9, but its player adapts to other source ratios, including vertical and square. YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding to force footage into a different frame, since that can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios.
Choose horizontal, vertical, or both
| Format or workflow | Good fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal only (16:9) | Shows, gameplay, presentations, and events composed for desktop or television screens. | Viewers encountering the stream in a vertical mobile context may not get a portrait-specific composition. |
| Vertical only (9:16) | Portrait-first content designed for mobile viewing. | Requires framing and graphics designed for a narrow, tall picture. |
| Dual format (16:9 + 9:16) | A program intended to work in both horizontal and vertical viewing contexts. | You need to inspect the vertical crop or layout and ensure important content remains visible. |
These are format tradeoffs, not promises about reach or engagement. YouTube’s guidance describes where the formats appear, but does not establish that one aspect ratio improves audience results.

How YouTube’s dual-format live stream works
YouTube Help says that when you stream from Live Control Room, streams go live in both horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 by default. The vertical output is a center crop of the horizontal picture unless you select another layout. Viewers receive one go-live notification and share one URL; viewers browsing the Shorts feed in the YouTube mobile app see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. Vertical streams open in a full-screen mobile experience. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Check the vertical composition
A center crop can cut off subjects near the sides of a landscape frame, as well as captions, graphics, or other overlays. Keep essential action and text within the portion that remains visible in portrait, or choose a different layout. YouTube’s available layouts include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked; you can adjust zoom and position. The safe-area advice here is a practical consequence of cropping, not a published YouTube pixel specification.

Review the vertical preview before going live. If you edit the layout in the editing canvas, YouTube says zoom and position can also be adjusted while live. Choose a layout that keeps the subject legible rather than assuming that a landscape composition will translate cleanly to portrait.
Set up dual streaming
From YouTube Live Control Room
- Open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you plan to use.
- Inspect the horizontal and vertical previews. The default vertical view uses a center crop; choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked according to your content.
- Adjust zoom and position as needed, then check that the subject, on-screen text, and overlays remain visible in the vertical version.
- Start the stream and monitor stream health and both compositions as the event runs.
With a third-party encoder
- Use YouTube’s dual-stream workflow and select RTMP(S) as the protocol.
- Set up a second stream key for the vertical stream. Send each format to its matching key: horizontal output to the horizontal key and vertical output to the vertical key.
- Confirm both previews and their layouts before starting. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.
- Start the stream and monitor its health. Test beforehand with motion and audio similar to the actual event.

Encoder settings: shape is only one decision
Choose aspect ratio and composition separately from resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube’s encoder guidance asks you to specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; it can detect settings and transcode output formats. It recommends square pixels, progressive scan, and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Encoder frame rates up to 60 fps are listed. Select a resolution and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain, test before the event, and watch stream health while live. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Do not add black bars just to make portrait material fill a 16:9 canvas. Let YouTube’s player adapt to the source ratio, or intentionally compose and send the format you want viewers to see. YouTube’s 16:9 recommendation on its 360-degree live-streaming page applies to 360-degree content; it is not a universal requirement for every live stream. YouTube Help: Live stream 360-degree videos.

Common problems and fixes
- The vertical view cuts off a person or graphic: The default center crop is removing content near the edges. Review the vertical preview, adjust zoom or position, or choose fit to phone width or stacked.
- The stream looks like a small picture surrounded by bars: Check whether bars or padding were added to the source to force a different ratio. Remove unnecessary padding and allow the player to adapt to the source aspect ratio.
- The vertical version is missing from an external-encoder stream: Check that dual output was configured before starting, that RTMP(S) is selected, and that each format is sent to its matching stream key. You cannot add the vertical format after the stream starts.
- The stream becomes unstable at the selected quality: Resolution and bitrate may exceed what the encoder or connection can sustain. Choose settings that fit both, test with representative motion and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- A portrait composition is hard to read in the horizontal version, or vice versa: The two shapes demand different framing. Plan the scene and graphics for both, use an appropriate dual-format layout, or choose the single format that best fits the production.
Do you need a dedicated encoder?
A hardware encoder can be relevant to a multi-camera or higher-production setup, but it is not required just to set an aspect ratio. Live Control Room or a software-encoder workflow can handle many streams; choose equipment based on the production needs, not on a belief that portrait or landscape streaming requires a dedicated device. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded program running on YouTube rather than stream a live camera or production, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast, and it does not decide or create your portrait/landscape composition for you. Start a free StreamNeo day.
