H.264 Explained: What AVC Means for Streaming and Video Files

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

H.264 is a video-coding standard used to compress and decompress moving pictures. It is also known as AVC (Advanced Video Coding). If you encounter H.264 or AVC in a streaming, recording, or export setting, it identifies the video codec—not the file container or the audio format.

What is H.264?

H.264 is a standard for encoding video so it can be stored or transmitted using less data than an uncompressed picture sequence. A compatible decoder reverses that coding to display the video. The standard was designed for uses including videoconferencing, digital storage, television broadcasting, and Internet streaming, across varied network environments. ITU-T describes it as an evolution of earlier video-coding standards developed in response to the need for higher compression of moving pictures. ITU-T’s H.264 recommendation sets out the standard.

What does AVC mean? Is H.264 the same as AVC?

AVC means Advanced Video Coding. H.264 and AVC are two names associated with the same jointly standardized video-coding technology: ITU-T H.264 is identical to ISO/IEC 14496-10. The work was jointly standardized by ITU-T’s Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC’s Moving Picture Experts Group; Fraunhofer HHI says the first version was finalized in May 2003. Fraunhofer HHI’s overview describes the project and naming.

H.264, MP4, and AAC are different parts of a media file

A codec, a container, and an audio codec answer different questions. H.264/AVC specifies how the video is coded. MP4 refers to a media container format that can package video and other data. AAC is an audio codec. A file can therefore use H.264 video and AAC audio inside an MP4-family container; changing the container does not by itself change the video codec.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This separation is reflected in the IEC’s encoding guidance, whose title specifies an MP4 file format, AVC video codec, and AAC audio codec as distinct parts of an encoding combination. IEC TS 62592:2012 covers the ISO base media file format and its family alongside AVC video and AAC audio.

Why H.264 still appears in streaming guidance

H.264 remains useful to understand because streaming specifications may include it for compatibility. Apple’s HLS authoring guidance lists H.264/AVC among allowed video encodings and says some content should use it for backward compatibility. The same specification names other encoding formats too, so H.264 is not the only current streaming option. For a particular stream, follow the requirements of the target service and devices rather than assuming one codec is best for every situation. Apple’s HLS authoring specification gives its device-focused guidance.

Current H.264 standard status

The ITU-T recommendation is titled “Advanced video coding for generic audiovisual services.” The ITU-T record lists version 16, approved in June 2026, as in force; version 15, approved in August 2024, is superseded. The record gives May 2003 as the first-edition approval date. These dates describe standards editions, not a measure of image quality or compression efficiency. Check the ITU-T recommendation record for edition status.

What H.264 does—and does not—tell you

  • It tells you: the video-coding standard used for the video stream.
  • It does not, by itself, tell you: the container, audio codec, resolution, bitrate, or whether a particular device or service accepts the complete file or stream.
  • To check compatibility: confirm the video, audio, container, and delivery requirements specified by the service or playback device you intend to use.

Keeping a pre-recorded H.264 video live on YouTube

H.264 identifies the video encoding, not a way to keep a live broadcast running. If you want to loop uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube stream, a cloud service can handle the ongoing playback separately from your file’s codec. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It does not broadcast from a camera.
