You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from an encoder connected to a scheduled or newly created stream in YouTube Studio. But a stream made mainly of standalone game cutscenes is a rights-sensitive format: some publishers expressly prohibit it, YouTube may interrupt streams for third-party content, and extended gameplay footage may not qualify for monetization. Check the rules for every game and its music before you build a schedule.
Choose a format before building the stream
There is an important difference between a stream that uses game footage to support original commentary and a loop whose main purpose is to show cutscenes. The second format can conflict directly with publisher rules. A lore or analysis angle does not by itself establish permission: check the relevant game’s current policy, any rules for third-party material, and the rights for music in the footage.
- Commentary-led analysis: Plan original narration or discussion tied to what viewers see, and check the publisher’s terms. This may be a format to investigate, not a guarantee that the stream is permitted or monetizable.
- Standalone cutscene loop: Do not assume that scenes available in a game may be rebroadcast as a continuous viewing channel. The publisher examples below include explicit restrictions on streams primarily presenting cutscenes.
Set up a YouTube encoder stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow is the practical route for a gameplay-style broadcast. Use the current stream settings shown in YouTube Studio and your encoder; match the video and audio output to the source and verify the feed in preview before making it public. YouTube’s setup instructions explain where to create a stream and connect an encoder: YouTube encoder setup and YouTube stream settings.
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also states a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements for your account at Getting started with live streaming.
- Prepare the programming and rights checks. Decide whether you are producing commentary-led analysis, licensed material, or a loop of scenes. Review the current rules for each game and the rights for music and other included material before scheduling it.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. Create a stream, or use Manage → Schedule stream to schedule one. Scheduling can give viewers a watch page in advance and let them set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it using the controls described in YouTube stream settings.
- Test the whole feed. Check the video, game audio, commentary, overlays, and the local recording. Start the encoder before the intended start time, inspect YouTube’s preview, confirm that you can access the watch page, and monitor the feed once it is live. - Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate, with additional capacity for a backup stream if applicable. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee of a stable connection. Refer to the current live-streaming tips and encoder settings when choosing output settings.

Check publisher rules for each game
Game policies are not interchangeable. These official examples show why a continuous cutscene channel needs a game-by-game review; they are examples, not permission for other titles.

Understand YouTube monetization and copyright risks
Gameplay monetization is conditional
YouTube says monetization of game footage depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. Its guidance says footage without the appropriate license must be minimal, and that monetization may require step-by-step commentary tied to the live action that provides instructional or educational value. It also warns that simply showing gameplay for extended periods may not be accepted. This is YouTube’s monetization guidance, not a general legal ruling about copyright or fair use. Music and Content ID can affect a live broadcast
YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content, including other broadcasts. It may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued third-party content can lead to a temporary interruption or termination. Even where you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruptions. A Content ID claim can also arrive after an archived stream ends. Plan archives and stream rotation
Do not rely on a very long broadcast to become a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, save a local recording and plan rotations below that threshold. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Check YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Rotation helps manage replay and recording files, but it is not an uptime guarantee. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 service. Follow YouTube’s operational recommendations: prepare ahead, test and preview, check the watch page and monitor stream quality, and confirm the local recording continues to grow. Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck that the encoder has the stream URL and key from the intended YouTube stream, then inspect Studio preview before going live. If the key may have been exposed, reset it through the stream settings.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check available upload bandwidth against the stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test before restarting a scheduled broadcast rather than assuming the connection is stable.
- Viewers see a warning, placeholder, or interruption: Review the video and audio for third-party material, especially game music, and check whether the relevant rights owner must allowlist the channel. A license does not necessarily prevent automated interruption on its own.
- The full replay is missing: Check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that streams longer than that may not be archived; retain a separate local recording when a complete replay is important.
- The stream is live but monetization is unavailable: Review the publisher’s commercial-use terms and YouTube’s game-content policy. A long recording of play or cutscenes without qualifying commentary may not meet YouTube’s monetization guidance.
Before you schedule a continuous channel
- Check YouTube live eligibility and the current encoder settings.
- Check current publisher rules for every game, plus rights for music and other third-party material.
- Decide whether the program is genuinely commentary-led or primarily a cutscene loop; the latter can be expressly prohibited.
- Test the stream, preview it, preserve local recordings, and plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation.
- Do not promise uninterrupted playback or monetization based only on a successful technical test.
