Neither Azure VM nor AWS EC2 is automatically cheaper or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The result depends on a like-for-like comparison of region, VM family and size, operating system, disk, IP and networking, video bitrate, and billing option. Estimate the complete monthly bill with each provider’s current calculator, then test the encoder and route to YouTube ingest in the region you plan to use.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Both Azure Virtual Machines and Amazon EC2 can host an encoder that sends a continuous stream to YouTube. The available official pricing and setup information does not establish a winner for this particular workload, and there is no Azure-versus-EC2 benchmark here. Treat price, encoding headroom, and reconnect behavior as questions to measure against your chosen region and configuration, not as provider-wide traits.
For a useful comparison, keep the workload identical: region, VM family and size, OS, persistent disk, public IP and network setup, output bitrate, stream schedule, and purchase option. Then compare the full monthly estimate and run an actual encoder-to-YouTube-ingest test. A VM price alone is not the cost of a continuous stream.

How much outbound bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
Bitrate is a major cost driver because the VM sends the video continuously. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Over 30 days of uninterrupted streaming, those rates represent approximately 3.24 TB and 5.51 TB of decimal video payload, respectively. These are calculations from the stated bitrate and duration, before protocol or other overhead—not YouTube-published monthly usage figures.

These are video payload estimates only. Add headroom and account for any backup feed or other traffic when estimating network capacity and transfer charges. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth above the combined stream bitrate and says to account for both primary and backup feeds. See its encoder bitrate guidance and streaming tips.
What belongs in each provider’s monthly estimate?
Build an equivalent estimate in the AWS EC2 pricing information and the Azure Linux VM pricing information or their current calculators. Include each applicable line item rather than comparing the VM compute line by itself.

- Compute time and purchase option: Use the hours the VM will actually run and the same pricing approach where possible. AWS says On-Demand instances are billed by time consumed, with per-second billing for listed OS families subject to a 60-second minimum. Other capacity-related items may cost extra. AWS also offers Savings Plans and Spot; Spot capacity is subject to its availability model, so it is not equivalent to guaranteed continuous capacity. Azure reservation pricing depends on matching VM type, region, and commitment term.
- Operating system and licensing: Choose the same OS for both estimates where it is suitable, and account for any applicable license cost rather than assuming it is included or equal.
- Persistent disk: Include disk capacity and type for the OS, media, logs, and any recovery files. Azure recommends Managed Disks; the disk remains a separate consideration in a complete estimate. AWS notes that storage can be an additional charge.
- IP and networking: Include the public IP and any other network resources the configuration needs. Confirm whether the calculator’s assumptions include them.
- Outbound transfer: Estimate the stream’s bitrate-driven traffic for the destination region and the provider’s current egress pricing. This can be a substantial part of a 24/7 bill.
AWS transfer figures are region-specific
AWS states that customers receive 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out, aggregated across AWS services and regions, with China and GovCloud exceptions. Check the current terms and how your usage qualifies. For US East (Ohio), AWS lists outbound internet transfer at $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB per month, $0.085/GB for the next 40 TB, $0.07/GB for the next 100 TB, and $0.05/GB above 150 TB. Those are Ohio tier figures, not a quote for another region or a complete EC2 bill; see the AWS regional pricing table.
Azure costs depend on location and VM state
Microsoft says standard egress charges apply to Linux VMs and that the exact cost depends on location and traffic. Use the current Azure calculator for the intended region and stream volume. Pay attention to VM state when testing or pausing: an Azure VM in Stopped state remains billable for compute, while Stopped (Deallocated) indicates compute is not being billed. The VM’s other resources may still have costs.
Discounts are not directly interchangeable
Microsoft advertises “up to 72%” savings against pay-as-you-go for eligible one- or three-year Azure reservations matched to VM type, region, and term. This is Microsoft’s maximum marketing claim under specified commitment conditions, not a forecast of savings for this stream. AWS Savings Plans and Spot have different terms and availability considerations. Compare the actual eligible price for your configuration and the operational constraints—not vendors’ maximum discount headlines.

Compare sustained encoding capacity and recovery in the chosen region
A continuous encoder needs enough sustained CPU or GPU capacity for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, with room for normal workload variation. The reviewed provider information does not identify a VM size that is proven best for a 24/7 YouTube encoder. Start with a candidate size, run the intended encoder settings under load, and observe resource use over a representative period before committing.
Region choice also needs measurement. Test the route from the VM to YouTube ingest, whether the encoder can maintain the target bitrate, and how it behaves when the connection drops and reconnects. Neither provider can be called more reliable for this use based on the available comparison evidence. Design and test your own restart and recovery process, including what happens after an encoder process failure or VM reboot.

- Choose a region and matched VM candidates. Select regions available to your account and appropriate for your needs. Match OS, VM family and size as closely as possible in both estimates.
- Model the complete month. Enter compute hours, disk, IP/network needs, and projected outbound data in each current calculator. Keep purchase terms explicit.
- Run the real encoder configuration. Send a test stream from each candidate region at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Check for sustained resource pressure, dropped frames, and ingest interruptions.
- Test failure recovery. Deliberately test the recovery path you plan to use, such as restarting the encoder after a failure. Record how long it takes to resume and whether YouTube accepts the reconnect; this is a workload test, not a provider-wide reliability score.
- Recheck the bill with measured usage. Replace estimates with observed transfer and resource requirements, then compare the full cost and the recovery effort you are willing to operate.
YouTube stream settings and key handling
For an encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance also specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. Select settings for the actual output resolution and frame rate, and use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance rather than assuming that a faster VM can compensate for an unsuitable encoder configuration.

Create or manage the broadcast and stream key through YouTube’s live-stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to the stream. The YouTube live stream settings help page explains the relevant controls. Configure the encoder with the ingest URL and key required by the chosen workflow, and test before relying on a continuous broadcast.

YouTube’s help page says an encoder stream under 12 hours is automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours; plan separately for any recording or archive you need. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A cloud VM does not grant rights to the video it transmits. Before scheduling a documentary, music, or other pre-recorded material, confirm you have the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s rules. Repeating a video continuously is not a substitute for permission, and an uninterrupted stream does not guarantee monetization or archive availability.
