YouTube lists OBS as a verified encoder, and OBS documents both individual media sources and a VLC-based playlist source that can loop. If you need a stream to keep running when your own computer is off, compare a self-managed FFmpeg setup on a VPS with a managed cloud service such as StreamNeo.
Which PRISM Live Studio alternative fits your workflow?
| Option | Best fit | What it supports | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A creator who wants an unattended prerecorded YouTube loop without maintaining a computer or server. | StreamNeo says its cloud service loops uploaded videos and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. | It is a paid recurring service and is less suited than scene-compositing software to live overlays and complex production. Its terms and features are vendor claims; see StreamNeo. |
| OBS Studio | A creator supervising the stream, or one who wants overlays and flexible desktop scenes. | YouTube lists OBS as an encoder; OBS documents media sources and a loopable VLC playlist. | It runs on your computer, so a continuous broadcast depends on the computer and its internet connection remaining available. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS | A technically comfortable creator who wants a self-managed stream running on a remote server. | StreamNeo’s guide describes an FFmpeg approach for continuous playback, including the -stream_loop -1 option. |
You are responsible for server setup, monitoring, and restart or recovery behavior. Server prices vary by provider and date. |
| PRISM Live Studio | An existing PRISM user checking whether a change is necessary. | PRISM’s FAQ confirms YouTube connectivity and video and audio media sources. | The reviewed PRISM documentation does not establish its precise repeat control. Check the current app before concluding that it cannot loop. |
The cloud and VPS descriptions above draw on StreamNeo’s vendor-authored guide, published July 3, 2026 and updated September 12, 2026 for paid-plan and trial details. Treat its service descriptions and cost examples as vendor information, not independent reliability testing or universal cost estimates. YouTube’s encoder directory identifies compatible encoders; it does not certify that every listed encoder can loop prerecorded video.
Why OBS is the clearest desktop alternative
YouTube includes Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) in its encoder list. OBS’s documentation explains how to add a Media Source for an individual file and how to use a VLC-based source for a playlist. The documented “Loop Playlist” property restarts playback after the media list runs out. VLC must be installed for the VLC-based source to appear in OBS.
Loop one video
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the YouTube broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the video file. Enable the source’s loop option if it is available in your installed OBS version, then confirm that the preview restarts after the end.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast using the stream key for that broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Start the stream in OBS and check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview before making the broadcast public.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed, then restart OBS so it can detect VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video Source.
- Add the video files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. OBS describes this setting as restarting the source when it has run out of media files.
- Test the end of the playlist and the transition back to its first item. Check the stream preview and audio before leaving the broadcast unattended.
OBS documentation lists common supported video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Compatibility can depend on the file and installed components, so test the actual media you plan to stream.

Get YouTube and the encoder ready
YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. An encoder can also support screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, and multi-camera production. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a time-sensitive broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming encoder setup guide and its encoder information.
- In YouTube Studio, schedule or create the live stream and locate its stream key and connection details in the Live Control Room.
- Enter the key in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Use a separate key for a different broadcast when appropriate, and do not publish or share the key.
- Confirm the encoder is sending video and audio and that YouTube displays an incoming preview. Allow time for YouTube’s stream checks before going live.
- For OBS, match the media source to the intended output and monitor playback, audio, and connection status. YouTube and OBS settings may change; use the current interface and official guidance for the broadcast you are configuring.
StreamNeo’s guide recommends H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4 container, a constant frame rate, and two-second keyframes. These are recommendations from that vendor guide, not requirements established here as current YouTube rules. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements before treating them as mandatory settings.

What PRISM users should check before switching
PRISM’s FAQ confirms that it can connect to YouTube and use video or audio files stored on the device as media sources. Its documentation reviewed here does not establish the exact behavior or availability of a repeat control, so verify the current app directly if looping is the only reason you are considering a switch.
PRISM’s performance guidance recommends matching a media source’s resolution to the transmission resolution and enabling hardware decoding when appropriate, particularly for large files when the GPU is stronger than the CPU. This is PRISM-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for OBS or other encoders. See the PRISM Live Studio FAQ.

Choose between a desktop, VPS, and cloud loop
OBS on your computer
Choose OBS when you want direct control over scenes, overlays, and the playback setup, and can keep the computer and network available for the duration of the stream. It is the most directly documented desktop choice in the sources here for both a single looping file and a playlist. A power cut, computer restart, or lost connection can interrupt a home-run broadcast.
FFmpeg on a VPS
A virtual private server can keep a process running away from your home computer, but it transfers the operational work to you. StreamNeo’s guide describes using FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option for repeating media. You still need to configure the server, provide the YouTube stream destination and key securely, monitor the process, and decide how it should restart after an error. The guide’s example costs are time-sensitive vendor estimates rather than a market-wide price comparison.

Managed cloud looping
A managed service reduces the need to operate your own computer or server, in exchange for a recurring fee and less flexibility for elaborate live scene compositing. StreamNeo’s service is specifically for uploaded video looping to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms. Its terms and prices can change, so check the current service page.

Do not assume that repeating a video makes a channel eligible for monetization. StreamNeo’s guidance cautions that monetization depends on originality review; that is vendor advice, not a substitute for YouTube’s current policy wording. Check YouTube’s official channel monetization policies and copyright guidance for the rules that apply to your channel.
Troubleshooting a loop that will not run
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops after one play. | The media source’s loop setting is off, or the playlist source is not configured to restart. | Check the Media Source loop control or enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video Source. Test the end-of-file transition in OBS. |
| The VLC playlist source is missing. | OBS has not detected VLC. | Install VLC and restart OBS, then check the Sources panel again. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview. | The stream may not be started, the key or destination may be incorrect, or first-time live access may not yet be enabled. | Recheck the broadcast’s stream key and connection settings in YouTube Studio and OBS. If this is the first live stream on the account, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement time of up to 24 hours. |
| Video or audio plays incorrectly. | The file may not work as expected with the selected source or installed components. | Test the file locally and in OBS, confirm that the right source is selected, and check audio levels and playback before going live. For PRISM-specific media playback, follow its guidance on resolution matching and hardware decoding where appropriate. |
| A stream stops when the home computer is unavailable. | OBS is running on that computer, so it cannot continue broadcasting when the machine or connection is down. | Restore the computer and connection, or choose a VPS or managed cloud workflow if you need the broadcast to run independently of the home machine. |
| A VPS stream does not restart after an interruption. | The process or server may need monitoring and restart behavior that was not configured. | Check the FFmpeg process, server status, logs, and recovery configuration. A self-managed VPS does not configure or monitor itself. |
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays your uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera, and supports YouTube only.
