To restart a YouTube stream after FFmpeg exits on a Hetzner server, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager such as systemd and configure the service to restart after failure. FFmpeg’s reconnect options solve a different problem: they can help with supported input or output interruptions while FFmpeg is still running, but they do not relaunch a process that has exited.
Choose the recovery mechanism for the failure
First determine whether FFmpeg is still running. A dropped input, a temporary output problem, and an exited process are different failures, so one recovery setting cannot handle all three.
| What you observe | Recovery layer to investigate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process has exited | Operating-system service manager | Starts FFmpeg again after the process fails. |
| FFmpeg remains running, but an input connection drops | FFmpeg input/protocol options | Reconnect behavior for supported inputs and protocols. Applicability varies by protocol. |
| FFmpeg remains running, but YouTube output has a transient failure | FFmpeg output/muxer behavior | The FIFO muxer has output recovery options; validate them with the actual build and protocol. |
| FFmpeg reconnects, but YouTube does not show the expected live event | YouTube Live Control Room settings | Checks the current stream URL and key, event state, and auto-start/auto-stop configuration. |
Use a service manager for an exited process. Treat FFmpeg reconnect options and output recovery as complementary measures for failures that occur while the process remains alive.
Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Use the event’s current stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that the encoder sends its feed to the stream URL using the key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use it with an FFmpeg build and configuration that support it. Keep the stream key private.
- Check event lifecycle settings. In Live Control Room, confirm whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled for this particular event. YouTube says these settings allow starting or stopping the stream from the encoder; they are copied when stream settings are reused. Do not assume a restarted encoder will have the lifecycle behavior you want: Manage live stream settings.
- Keep credentials out of exposed files and logs. Put the invocation in a service unit or wrapper script, and protect the key using restrictive file permissions or an appropriate secret mechanism. Avoid world-readable files and logging the key.
Run FFmpeg under a service manager
On a Linux server, systemd is a common service manager. The general approach is to put the exact FFmpeg command you intend to use into a service unit, have systemd restart it on failure, and include a delay or rate limit so a persistent fault does not create a rapid crash loop.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The exact unit directives and paths depend on the operating system, systemd version, FFmpeg installation, and your input and output. No Hetzner-specific systemd recipe is established here, so treat this as general Linux guidance rather than a provider-validated configuration. Check the directives supported by your server’s installed systemd version before deploying.
- Save and validate the production command. Use the same FFmpeg binary, input, YouTube URL/key handling, and output settings that you will run unattended. Verify that the command works manually before putting it under supervision.
- Create a service unit or wrapper. Store the command in a systemd service or a wrapper script referenced by one. Keep secrets protected; do not embed the key in a file that other users can read.
- Set failure recovery deliberately. Configure systemd to restart the service after a process failure, with a restart delay or rate limit appropriate to your environment. Avoid an immediate, unlimited loop: repeated restarts will not fix invalid credentials, missing media, incompatible output settings, exhausted resources, or an ended YouTube event.
- Enable and start the service using your server’s normal systemd workflow. Confirm that systemd reports the service as active and that FFmpeg is sending a feed before relying on it.
- Inspect service and FFmpeg logs. Confirm the reason for an exit and that the supervisor actually starts a new process. Scrub logs and diagnostic output before sharing them if they might expose credentials.
This outline intentionally does not prescribe a copy-and-paste unit: the right command and supported directives depend on the installed system and stream. Validate against local systemd documentation and your installed FFmpeg build.

Use FFmpeg reconnect and output recovery only for the failures they cover
Input interruption
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation defines reconnect as automatic reconnection when disconnected before EOF is hit. Input reconnect options apply only where the input protocol supports them; the documentation discusses protocols such as HTTP, so do not assume an option works identically with every source. Check the options exposed by your installed build with ffmpeg -h and test with the actual input. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Temporary output interruption
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents output recovery options and a network-output example. This may help with a transient output failure while FFmpeg remains alive; it does not replace process supervision if FFmpeg exits. Verify the relevant FIFO options against your installed build and actual output protocol: FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Process exit
If the FFmpeg process has terminated, input reconnect or FIFO recovery cannot relaunch it. That is the service manager’s job. Diagnose the exit cause before relying on repeated restarts.
Test the restart without risking a real event
Do a controlled test with a noncritical or staging stream before depending on unattended operation. YouTube recommends testing failover and checking the preview, accessibility, local archive, and stream audio/video: Live streaming tips.

- Start the supervised FFmpeg service and confirm the feed appears in the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Stop or terminate the FFmpeg process deliberately. Confirm that the service manager detects the exit, waits as configured, and starts FFmpeg again.
- Check the new process’s logs and the Live Control Room preview. Confirm playback and audio/video, and verify that the expected event lifecycle behavior occurred.
- If transient network interruptions matter to your setup, test those separately. A process-exit test does not prove that input reconnect or output recovery works.
- Confirm auto-start/auto-stop settings before testing. Do not use a real event if a test could stop it or end it unintentionally.
YouTube’s encoder guidance notes that ending a stream requires stopping content from the encoder. Verify the event’s state in Live Control Room after testing rather than assuming that a restarted process restored the intended live session.

- The service does not restart: Check the service-manager status and logs, confirm the unit’s restart policy is appropriate for the failure, and verify that the command can run under the service’s configured user and environment.
- FFmpeg restarts repeatedly: Inspect the first failure, not just subsequent restart messages. Check the input’s availability, credentials, stream URL, output compatibility, and server resource constraints. Add or adjust delay/rate limiting to avoid a rapid crash loop.
- FFmpeg stays running but the input is gone: Confirm that the input protocol supports the reconnect option you selected and that the installed FFmpeg build exposes it. Do not treat process supervision as input recovery.
- FFmpeg stays running but YouTube output fails: Check the output protocol and FIFO muxer recovery configuration for the installed build. Confirm YouTube’s current stream URL and key in Live Control Room.
- The encoder sends data but the event is not live as expected: Check the correct event, URL, key, preview, and auto-start/auto-stop settings. Test lifecycle behavior with a noncritical event.
- The key may have been exposed: Treat it as a credential. Restrict file access and logs, and use YouTube’s current controls to replace or reset it if necessary.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than managing an FFmpeg process on a Hetzner server, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video, not a camera feed.
