How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive

A 24/7 MediaLive broadcast needs a continuously available source as well as an AWS input, channel and YouTube output. Here’s how to connect and operate the full chain.

To run a 24/7 YouTube stream through AWS Elemental MediaLive, you need more than a MediaLive channel: you need a source that stays live, a MediaLive input and channel, and an output configured for YouTube. Create a YouTube stream in Live Control Room, connect the source to MediaLive, configure the output, then start and verify the workflow. MediaLive handles ingest, transcoding and delivery; it does not create or supply the continuous programme.

What a 24/7 MediaLive workflow needs

The practical chain has three parts: an upstream source, a MediaLive input and channel, and a downstream output to YouTube. The source supplies the picture and sound; the input brings that feed into AWS; the channel processes it; and the output sends it to YouTube. AWS’s Elemental MediaLive User Guide describes this workflow and its channel pipelines.

The source could be a camera and production system, an always-on computer running an encoder such as OBS, or another live feed. It must keep supplying content for the broadcast’s full duration. MediaLive is not a substitute for that source, and it does not make an intermittent source continuous.

Do you need OBS?

No. OBS is one possible upstream encoder, not a MediaLive requirement. Use it if it is the system producing or encoding your programme; another compatible live source can feed MediaLive instead. The right choice depends on what is generating the content and how reliably it can remain available.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create a stream or load one you have already set up.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The encoder needs both to connect to YouTube.
  4. Store the key as a secret. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, source code or public configuration; someone with the key may be able to send a feed to that destination.

YouTube’s Help page, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder,” describes entering the stream URL and key in the encoder. Check the channel’s current live-stream eligibility and YouTube’s current ingest requirements in YouTube Studio and its current help materials; eligibility and technical requirements are not established here for every channel or region.

Create a MediaLive input for your source

Choose an input architecture based on network reachability and which side should initiate the connection. In an RTMP push setup, the source pushes to MediaLive. In an RTMP pull setup, MediaLive connects to a source URL. Push is not mandatory for every workflow.

RTMP push

  1. In AWS Elemental MediaLive, create an RTMP push input and attach an input security group.
  2. Allow the upstream source’s public egress IP addresses in that security group. Where practical, use a narrow allowlist of known addresses rather than opening access more broadly.
  3. Use the input destinations generated in your AWS account. Do not copy sample IP addresses from documentation as if they were your endpoints.
  4. For a standard-class input, configure the source to send to both generated destinations; a single-pipeline input uses one destination.

AWS’s “Create an RTMP push input” guidance says a push source must already be sending when the channel starts. The source therefore needs working network access to the generated destination or destinations before you start the channel.

RTMP pull

For a pull workflow, configure the upstream RTMP source URL or URLs and any required credentials so MediaLive can reach the source. Confirm routing, firewall rules and credential handling on the path MediaLive will use. The initiating side differs from push, so the right choice depends on your network and who can accept or establish the connection.

Configure the channel and YouTube output

  1. Create a MediaLive channel and attach the input you created.
  2. Choose an output group appropriate to the YouTube ingest path you intend to use. An AWS Public Sector walkthrough demonstrates an RTMP(S) output to YouTube using a stream key.
  3. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the relevant output configuration. Treat the key as a secret throughout configuration and operations.
  4. Set video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe cadence to match the actual source and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
  5. Review the complete input, channel and output configuration before starting the channel.

Do not copy a bitrate or keyframe interval from an old example as a current universal setting. The AWS examples cited here do not establish a current general-purpose YouTube bitrate table. YouTube’s requirements can depend on the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec; check the current specification for the intended stream before configuring the encoder.

AWS’s Media Blog published a specialized HLS ingest example for 4K/HDR YouTube streaming on 2021-04-14. It used an HLS output group and showed 4K, 59.94 fps and 20 Mbps as example settings. Those are dated example values, not universal recommendations. Recheck current AWS console settings and YouTube requirements before adapting that specific HLS workflow. For ordinary streaming, that advanced example is not the only route.

RTMP(S) or HLS?

Choose the output path based on the YouTube ingest workflow, supported packaging and codecs, and any resolution or HDR requirements. RTMP(S) is demonstrated in the AWS Public Sector walkthrough; HLS is the path in AWS’s specialized 4K/HDR example. Neither example proves that one protocol is best for every channel. Confirm current compatibility and requirements for your intended setup.

Choose the channel’s resilience level

AWS recommends two-pipeline processing for MediaLive resiliency. Its User Guide explains that the pipelines work independently while performing identical processing. That protects against some failures within MediaLive, but it is not end-to-end redundancy by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice What it means What you must plan
Single-pipeline One MediaLive processing pipeline; simpler, with less MediaLive pipeline redundancy. Accept the reduced MediaLive redundancy and consider whether the source, network or other components also have single points of failure.
Standard, two-pipeline Two independent MediaLive pipelines perform identical processing. Provide two upstream sources and two downstream outputs, and plan how the full chain behaves if a source, link or destination fails. Standard channels have a different charge basis from single-pipeline channels.

Do not treat the standard channel setting as a guarantee that every part of the broadcast is redundant. If both pipelines depend on one source, one network link or one destination arrangement, that component can still interrupt the stream.

Start the workflow and verify the broadcast

  1. Confirm that the source is ready and sending wherever the chosen input requires it. For RTMP push, AWS says the upstream must already be pushing when the channel starts.
  2. Check the MediaLive input, channel and output configuration, including the YouTube URL and protected stream key.
  3. Start the channel and confirm that MediaLive reaches Running.
  4. Check Live Control Room for an incoming preview. Resolve input or output errors before beginning a public broadcast.
  5. Start the broadcast using the controls appropriate to the chosen YouTube workflow. The exact order can depend on input type and output configuration: AWS’s social-streaming tutorial starts MediaLive first and then OBS, while RTMP push requires the upstream to be sending when the channel starts.

A preview confirms that YouTube is receiving an ingest feed; it does not prove that your source, network or channel will remain healthy indefinitely. Monitor the source, connectivity, credentials and MediaLive channel during operation, and decide who will respond to an interruption.

Plan continuity and archiving beyond the initial connection

A 24/7 service needs an operational plan for source disconnects, YouTube rejecting or losing the feed, maintenance and restarts. Decide how you will detect a failure, restore the source or output, and communicate any interruption. MediaLive can process and send a feed, but the source and the rest of the chain still need to be maintained.

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce one complete automatic archive. If preserving the full programme matters, arrange a separate recording or a deliberate segmentation and restart strategy.

Copyright and reused material

Before scheduling a documentary or other continuous stream, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track and other element in the programme. A technically successful ingest does not establish that the material is cleared for a YouTube livestream or archive. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content, and retain a separate copy if you need reliable preservation of the programme.

Estimate AWS costs for the actual configuration

There is no defensible single current price for “MediaLive 24/7” without the region and configuration. AWS’s MediaLive pricing guidance says input charges depend on input characteristics and output charges on output characteristics. A running channel can incur charges for every attached input, even when an input is inactive or not receiving content. Output configuration and channel class also affect charges, and idle resources can incur charges.

  • Estimate the AWS region, input count and characteristics, output count and characteristics, codec, resolution, frame rate and any add-ons.
  • Include the channel class: standard two-pipeline and single-pipeline channels have different rates.
  • Check for resources left running or idle, because they may still cost money.
  • Use AWS’s current pricing page or calculator for the estimate rather than relying on an old tutorial’s hourly figure.

An AWS Public Sector walkthrough published around 2020 gave a $1.26-per-hour example for a 1080p, multi-destination setup in selected US regions. It is historical, configuration-specific and not a current estimate for your account or region.

Common setup problems and what to check

Symptom Likely cause What to check
MediaLive cannot receive the RTMP push feed The source is not sending, the generated destination is wrong, or the security group does not allow the source’s public IP. Confirm the source is pushing to the account-generated endpoint, check its public egress IP against the input security group, and verify connectivity before starting the channel.
A standard-class push input is not receiving as expected The source may be sending to only one of the two destinations. Check that the source supplies both destinations required for the standard-class input.
MediaLive runs but YouTube has no incoming preview The output destination or stream key may be incorrect, or the configured output may not match the intended ingest path. Compare the output’s server URL and key with the current Live Control Room values, confirm the output group and format, and check both MediaLive and YouTube status.
The broadcast stops when the source stops MediaLive is receiving an upstream feed that is no longer available; the channel does not create replacement content. Restore the source and network path, and design monitoring and recovery for the upstream system as well as MediaLive.
The stream is not fully archived The continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition. Use a separate recording or planned segmentation and restart process when a complete archive is required.
The AWS bill is higher than expected Attached inputs, output settings, standard-class processing or idle resources may be contributing charges. Review running and idle resources and estimate the actual region and configuration using current AWS pricing information.
