To lower CPU use in a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, first switch from software encoding to a compatible hardware encoder if your computer has one. Then simplify the OBS scene, reduce unnecessary source dimensions and filters, and test a lower output resolution or frame rate if the image still looks right. These changes target two separate workloads: encoding the video and rendering the scene. The best combination depends on your hardware and setup; there is no established CPU-saving percentage or universal lofi preset.
Find out whether encoding or scene rendering is the problem
A stream can use CPU for encoding—the work of compressing video for YouTube—and for rendering the OBS scene, which combines sources, effects and overlays into each frame. Changing the encoder can reduce encoding work on the CPU, but it will not necessarily fix a scene that is expensive to render. Simplifying sources and filters addresses the scene workload.
Make one change at a time, then test with the same scene and similar audio and motion. This helps you see which adjustment matters on your computer without assuming a particular setting will work for every system.
Switch to a compatible hardware encoder
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder selected for streaming. If it is x264, that is software encoding on the CPU. If your computer offers a suitable hardware option, select it and test the result before relying on it for a long broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and, on supported Macs, Apple VideoToolbox. Availability depends on your hardware, operating system and drivers. OBS explains that hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. This can ease CPU load, but it uses GPU resources and is not a guarantee of a particular reduction.
Compare the actual output at your intended bitrate. OBS cautions that older generations of hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset. If the picture degrades or the stream becomes unstable, try another available encoder or return to the previous setting.

Make the OBS scene cheaper to render
A mostly static lofi stream often does not need a complicated scene. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible, and that browser sources and filters can add performance costs. Remove or disable sources you do not need, including hidden ones.
- Use an image source for static artwork rather than a browser source when the graphic does not need to change.
- Reduce browser-source dimensions to the size actually displayed in the output.
- Resize large media assets to what the scene needs, rather than loading unnecessarily large files.
- Remove filters and animated overlays that do not contribute enough to the visual to justify their cost.
- Use media or VLC sources for video and audio assets where appropriate.
After each change, watch the stream output and OBS performance indicators during a representative test. A scene that is easy to encode may still be demanding to render if it has costly sources or effects.

Test a lower resolution or frame rate
If hardware encoding and a simpler scene are not enough, test a lower output resolution or frame rate in Settings > Video. A static illustration or gently moving background may remain suitable at a lower frame rate, but the right choice depends on the source material and the look you want. Check the live output rather than assuming that a lower setting will be acceptable.
Lower output settings also change the bitrate YouTube recommends. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended bitrates by codec, resolution and frame rate; for example, its H.264 recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Those figures are ingest recommendations, not CPU-performance targets. Check the current table for your selected codec and output settings at YouTube’s encoder settings guide.

Keep YouTube ingest settings in range
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the guidance for your chosen codec and output rather than raising settings without a visual reason. These are YouTube ingest requirements and recommendations, not a recipe for lowering CPU by themselves.
Test with audio and movement similar to the broadcast you plan to run, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. A successful short test is useful, but it does not establish that every computer or scene will remain stable indefinitely.

Separate upload bandwidth from CPU load
A network bottleneck can interrupt a stream even when the computer has enough processing capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is network guidance, not a CPU setting. See YouTube’s streaming tips before settling on a bitrate.
Troubleshoot common causes
- CPU remains high after choosing hardware encoding: Check whether the selected encoder is actually active, then simplify sources and filters. Encoding and scene rendering are separate workloads.
- The picture looks worse after switching encoders: Compare the output at the same bitrate. An older hardware encoder generation may deliver lower quality than software encoding; try another supported option or revert.
- CPU or rendering load stays high with a simple-looking scene: Check hidden sources, browser overlays, oversized source dimensions and filters. A source need not be visible to consume resources.
- YouTube reports stream-health or connection problems: Check whether the bitrate fits your upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. A network issue is distinct from CPU encoding load.
- The stream is stable in a brief test but fails during a long run: Test the representative audio and motion, monitor stream health during the event, and make changes incrementally. No setting in the available guidance guarantees continuous operation on every system.
When a graphics-card upgrade makes sense
Consider a graphics card with a compatible hardware video encoder only if your current setup is CPU-bound and does not offer a suitable hardware encoder. First check the encoder options available in OBS and try reducing scene costs. A new card is not a universal requirement for a lofi stream, and older hardware encoder generations can involve an image-quality trade-off. Without your computer specifications, there is no grounded model recommendation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on to keep the cloud stream running.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
