Before relying on it, test the VPS’s sustained outbound bandwidth and route to YouTube; a Mumbai location alone does not establish upload capacity or stability.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and an event selected or created in Live Control Room.
- A Mumbai VPS with the media files available locally, sufficient CPU if you need to transcode, and sustained outbound capacity for the chosen stream bitrate.
- An FFmpeg build with the required input and encoder support. The example below uses
libx264; check your build before using it. - The event’s RTMPS URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, shared logs, or shell history.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), permits up to 60 fps, and specifies a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For the example’s H.264 profile, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps at 720p30. YouTube’s encoder settings recommend RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP.
1. Create or select the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS address if your FFmpeg build and event support it. YouTube documents encoder connection setup and stream keys in its Live streaming setup help.
- Set the event’s privacy and latency options. Choose normal, low, or ultra-low latency based on how much real-time interaction matters; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering.
- Keep the key in a protected environment variable or service configuration. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
2. Prepare the playlist
For a sequence of compatible files, make an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list. The paths below are examples; use the actual absolute paths on your VPS.
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/srv/media/clip-03.mp4'
The concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. Compatibility matters: differences in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio layout can prevent clean stream-copy concatenation. If the clips do not match, normalize or re-encode them; FFmpeg’s concat filter is an option when the inputs need filtering during a re-encode. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Send a paced, looping stream with FFmpeg
A file plays as fast as it can be read unless it is paced. FFmpeg’s -re reads the input at real-time speed, while -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. Store the event credentials as protected environment variables rather than typing the key directly into a command that may be saved in shell history.
export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='YOUR_RTMPS_URL'
export YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY='YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting template, not a tested command. It targets H.264 video at 6 Mbps for YouTube’s recommended 720p30 bitrate, with AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Set the output resolution and frame rate explicitly if the playlist does not already have the intended format. Set -g to approximately two seconds’ worth of frames: 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Confirm the RTMPS URL format against the event’s displayed value and verify that your FFmpeg build includes libx264. FFmpeg documents -re and -stream_loop in its command-line documentation; YouTube’s recommended bitrate and keyframe settings are in its encoder guidance.

Do not apply -re to an actual live network input: FFmpeg warns that imposing a slower read rate on a live source can cause packet loss. It is appropriate here because the inputs are files.
4. Check bandwidth and confirm the stream
The configured video bitrate is not the full network requirement. Audio and protocol overhead add traffic, and YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. Measure sustained outbound performance, packet loss, and route stability from the VPS itself; a host’s advertised download speed does not prove its upload performance. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Start FFmpeg ahead of the intended broadcast and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check that the preview has both moving video and audio.
- Check playback from another device, then monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while the test runs.
- Only use the selected VPS and bitrate for a longer broadcast after the actual outbound connection remains stable under that load.
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates vary with output settings: 6 Mbps at 720p30, 8 Mbps at 720p60, and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can sustain the stream. Higher resolutions and frame rates need more bandwidth; transcoding also needs adequate VPS CPU. The available YouTube guidance does not establish performance for a specific Mumbai VPS plan, so test the chosen instance rather than assuming its region or advertised speed is sufficient.
5. Plan reconnects and broadcasts longer than 12 hours
FFmpeg documents FIFO-muxer recovery behavior for some temporary output failures, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted end-to-end recovery for every network problem or YouTube event. Test the behavior with your FFmpeg build and event configuration. If the FFmpeg process itself must restart after exiting, configure a process supervisor and verify how the selected YouTube event handles reconnection.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous broadcast expected to run longer, plan an event restart and archive workflow, then verify it before deployment. See YouTube’s encoder setup help. For media with rights restrictions, confirm that you have permission to stream every video and audio element; a successful technical connection does not grant copyright rights.
