Build a seven-day programming grid, prepare a rights-cleared playlist for each block, and decide whether each playlist repeats or hands off to the next. Then configure and test the playback system that sends the videos to YouTube. The grid is your programming plan; a scheduled YouTube stream is a separate live event that can have its own watch page and reminders. For a continuous 24/7 broadcast, also plan a local recording: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Plan the rotation before setting up the stream
A dependable rotation starts with two separate documents: an asset inventory and a weekly grid. The inventory tracks what you may play; the grid determines when and in what order it plays. Keeping them separate makes it easier to update the schedule without losing rights records or runtime information.
Inventory every video
Create one row per asset and record:
- Title and file name
- Runtime and theme
- Audience suitability
- Rights evidence, including territory, term, and permission for live-stream use
- Last-played date
- Any required opening slate, transition, or end card
Set aside anything with unclear rights until you resolve them. A video’s availability on YouTube does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights: YouTube livestream terms and conditions.
Choose a repeat pattern viewers can learn
Use a handful of recurring dayparts or themes—such as “how-to morning,” “archive afternoon,” or “community picks”—so the channel has a recognizable rhythm. Decide how much material the library can support before a viewer sees the same items again. There is no ideal rotation length established in YouTube’s cited guidance; the right cadence depends on your library and editorial goals.

YouTube recommends a sustainable upload schedule, recurring formats or day associations, and clear communication when the schedule changes. Those principles help viewers understand the rotation, but they do not prescribe how often a video should repeat: YouTube upload schedule tips for Live.
Draft a seven-day grid
Use one time zone consistently. UTC is useful for a worldwide audience; otherwise label the audience time zone clearly and account for daylight-saving changes. Give each block a start time, theme, ordered video list, estimated duration, transition plan, public-facing title or description, rights check, and operator or automation note. Reserve a maintenance or contingency block instead of assuming every minute will be uninterrupted programming.

This is an illustrative template, not a YouTube requirement. Replace the themes with your own material. Calculate each block’s length by adding video runtimes and transition time; a playlist is not a day long simply because it is labeled for a day. Decide what happens at the end of the list: loop it, hand off to another block, or show a holding slate.
Choose how playback will follow the grid
Fixed-order playlist
A fixed order is best when the sequence itself matters—for example, an introduction followed by a series of episodes—or when viewers should encounter the same progression each time the block returns. Mark where the sequence starts and ends in your grid, and calculate how frequently the first video will recur.

Shuffled playlist
Shuffle can make a large archive feel less repetitive, but it makes the exact sequence less predictable. Keep a record of the last-played date if you need to avoid returning to the same title too soon. In OBS, shuffle is off by default for the VLC Video source, according to its documentation.
Themed dayparts
Separate playlists for different blocks make a weekly schedule easier to understand and update. They require a reliable handoff at the grid’s designated times, whether an operator switches playlists or an appropriate automation system does it. The OBS documentation describes playlist playback and looping, but does not document a complete seven-day calendar scheduler; do not assume a playlist source alone will change blocks on a weekly timetable.

Set up playback and connect it to YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before the planned launch. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Prepare the playback source. In OBS, use a Media Source for one local file that should loop, or a VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple files. The OBS guide documents playlist playback; enable Loop Playlist if the list should restart, and leave Shuffle Playlist off for a deliberate sequence. Confirm the controls in the OBS version you install because the cited OBS knowledge-base article is dated January 11, 2022: OBS Media Sources.
- Get the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the encoder workflow to obtain the server URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder’s stream settings. The key directs the encoder feed; treat it like a password and do not share it. Follow the current interface in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure the grid handoff. Prepare a playlist for each block and specify who or what switches to it at the scheduled time. Test the handoff, transitions, and fallback slate; the documented playlist loop is not itself a weekly scheduling system.
- Check bandwidth and recording capacity. YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom. Include the combined bitrate of a backup encoder if you use one. For local recording, size storage according to the recording bitrate, resolution, hours retained, and backup plan. Decide whether to run one continuous event or scheduled events
A weekly grid and a YouTube event solve different problems. The grid organizes programming; a scheduled event creates an upcoming stream page that viewers can find and opt to be notified about. You can schedule separate broadcasts for particular blocks or milestones, while a continuous broadcast can carry the repeating or dayparted playlist. Preflight, monitor, and protect the archive
Before going live
YouTube recommends beginning encoder setup at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the watch page is accessible, and verify that audio and video are correct before relying on the schedule. While the stream is running
- Monitor audio and video rather than assuming a successful connection means playback is healthy.
- Check that the current block and next handoff match the grid.
- Keep total stream bitrate within upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- If a local recording is important, confirm that the recording file is growing and that storage will last through the planned retention period.
Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24/7 VOD
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 event therefore cannot be counted on to produce a complete YouTube archive. Record locally and keep a backup if continuity matters.
