Choose OBS Studio if you want a graphical way to manage scenes, sources, and a looping playlist; choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable running a command-line media pipeline under Linux service supervision. Neither is proven inherently more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube radio station. The outcome depends on the input, network, configuration, monitoring, restart plan, and YouTube’s live status.
What the comparison means for a 24/7 station
YouTube accepts encoder-based livestreams and supports continuous 24/7 streams. You set up the stream in YouTube Studio, then enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. If live streaming is being enabled on a channel for the first time, YouTube Help says activation may take up to 24 hours; check the channel’s own eligibility and Studio controls during setup. OBS and FFmpeg are different operating workflows, not guaranteed reliability levels. OBS is a graphical production application. FFmpeg is a command-line tool that can run a scripted input-to-output pipeline. The available evidence does not include a controlled uptime, crash-rate, CPU, bandwidth, or cost comparison.

Where OBS fits
OBS is a practical fit if you want to see and adjust scenes, visuals, and sources while operating the station. Its streaming settings let you select a service or server and enter a stream key; it also includes an automatic reconnect option. Looping audio and visuals
For a single local file, OBS Media Source can play and loop it. For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlist looping and shuffle. Pick the source based on how you have assembled the station’s audio and visual material, and test that it continues playing as intended. OBS Media Sources
Startup and remote control
OBS supports launch parameters including --startstreaming and options for choosing a profile or scene. This can help automate startup, but a launch command is not a substitute for checking that the stream reaches YouTube and stays live. FFmpeg: a scriptable pipeline for an unattended host
Where FFmpeg fits
FFmpeg suits an operator who is comfortable configuring a command-line pipeline and maintaining the host that runs it. A documented community example uses an Ubuntu VPS to loop audio and video inputs and send the output to YouTube over RTMP, with a systemd service to restart the process. This shows one possible deployment, not an official FFmpeg or YouTube recommendation, and it does not establish that FFmpeg requires a VPS.
Restarting is not the same as recovering the stream
In that same operator report, a watchdog checked progress and scheduled restarts were added after a silent freeze that server-side counters did not detect. The operator reported a four-hour recovery bound for that particular setup; it is not a general FFmpeg result or recommended interval. The lesson is operational: a running process or advancing local counter does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream. Monitor the platform-visible result as well as the encoder and host. Set up whichever encoder you choose
- Confirm the channel can go live. Open YouTube Studio and check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and controls. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube Help, so allow for that before a planned launch.
- Prepare the audio and visuals. In OBS, choose a Media Source for a file or VLC Video for a playlist and configure looping as needed. In FFmpeg, configure the input files and loop behavior in the command or script you will run. Listen and watch through a full test cycle.
- Configure the encoder in YouTube Studio. Create or open the live stream, then copy the Live server URL and stream key shown by YouTube into OBS or the FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a public script or screenshot.
- Plan how the process starts again. In OBS, test automatic reconnect and any chosen launch parameters. With FFmpeg, configure the host’s service manager to start and restart the process, then verify the actual service behavior after a test stop or host restart.
- Test the complete path. OBS Project recommends testing before the first live stream. Confirm locally that playback continues, and in YouTube Studio or the public viewing experience that the stream is live and audio is reaching viewers. A process that appears active locally can still fail at the platform end.
- Keep a recovery route. Record where the stream key is stored, how to restart the encoder, and how to check YouTube’s live status. Test the recovery procedure before relying on it unattended. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Troubleshoot the failure you can observe
- OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects: OBS’s troubleshooting guide associates these symptoms with an unstable network link or a connection unable to sustain the configured bitrate. - The encoder is running, but YouTube looks frozen or offline: Treat encoder health and platform-visible health as separate signals. Check the live status and viewer-facing output, then investigate the connection and restart or recover the stream if needed. A process-only monitor can miss a silent freeze, as the cited FFmpeg operator report illustrates.
- The playlist stops or does not repeat: Check the selected OBS source type and its loop or playlist settings, or verify the loop behavior in your FFmpeg inputs. Run the source through a test cycle before leaving it unattended.
- The encoder starts, but the stream does not appear live: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the current YouTube Studio stream details, confirm the channel is eligible to stream, and verify that the encoder is actually sending output.
- Automatic reconnect or service restart does not restore viewing: Confirm the process restarted, then separately verify that YouTube shows a live stream and viewers can receive audio. Process recovery alone is not proof of a successful stream recovery.
