In OBS, use a Media Source for a track or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Set up and test the source before the broadcast; adding music this way does not give you the rights to play it.
Prepare the songs and source before going live
First confirm that you have the rights needed to use each track in a livestream, including any intended territories and an archived replay. Then add the audio source to the OBS scene or mix you plan to use. Preparing it in advance lets you start playback or switch scenes while the encoder keeps sending its feed to YouTube.
For one or a few local tracks: Media Source
OBS Media Source supports audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Add the source to the scene that is part of your live output, then select the authorized file. The exact controls can vary by OBS version and scene layout; OBS documentation on media sources is dated January 11, 2022, so check the labels in your installed version.
For a queue of tracks: VLC Video source
OBS documents a VLC Video source that can use a list of media items. VLC must be installed. Load the authorized files in the intended order and set looping or shuffle behavior before the stream. Choose this approach when you want a prepared playlist rather than starting individual tracks one at a time.

Test the audio and transition
- Keep the current encoder feed running. Open the project and identify the scene or mix already being sent to YouTube. Do not stop the encoder just to insert a source; stopping its feed ends the encoder connection.
- Check the source in the live output. Start the track or playlist during a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Confirm it is audible in the program output, that other audio remains balanced, and that switching scenes does not silence the stream.
- Check YouTube’s preview. Use the Live Control Room preview to verify the stream before relying on the setup in a public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before a live event.
- During the broadcast, start or switch to the prepared source. Enable playback in the scene already being sent, or switch to the prepared scene. Leave the encoder running. The precise button sequence depends on your scene layout and OBS version.
- Monitor for warnings. Keep an eye on the Live Control Room. If YouTube reports a copyright issue, stop or replace the flagged material promptly; continued third-party content can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.
Music rights and Content ID still apply
This workflow addresses stream continuity, not music licensing. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say providers represent that they hold the rights needed for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, it may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if it continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a licence, a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the live event.

For Indian songs, do not assume that buying a track, having a consumer music subscription, crediting the artist in the description, or obtaining permission from just one participant covers every right required for a livestream. Confirm with the relevant rights owners or a qualified rights provider that the permission covers your repertoire, intended territories, live use, replay or archive use, and any required Content ID allowlisting. The sources cited here do not establish a universal India-wide licence or verify a named licensing provider.
YouTube’s separate live Content ID matching feature is intended for eligible Content Manager partners with global rights and exclusive ownership; it is not a way for ordinary streamers to obtain permission to play someone else’s music.

What happens to the replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended through its documented encoder workflow. An archive can still receive a Content ID claim, so make sure your permissions cover the replay as well as live playback.
