You can use a spare Windows, macOS, or Linux PC as a nonstop sermon-stream encoder: connect your camera and audio, build a scene in OBS, send the stream to YouTube with the channel’s stream URL and key, and test the full signal path before relying on it. The main caveat is that meeting OBS’s minimum system requirements does not prove an older computer can encode reliably around the clock. Test the actual PC, network, and YouTube viewing page—and plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary.
1. Choose what the stream should show
Start by mapping the signal path from source to viewer. Decide whether the channel will show a live sanctuary camera, slides with the pastor, recorded sermon material, or a combination. Identify the audio source as well: a soundboard output, a microphone connected to the PC, or a computer microphone in a simple home setup.
Connect the video source
- USB webcam: Connect it directly to the PC; it does not need an HDMI capture card.
- HDMI camera or switcher: The computer needs a compatible capture input. If it does not already have one, a USB HDMI capture card may be appropriate. Check the camera’s output, operating-system and driver compatibility, and card compatibility before buying.
- Slides and pastor video: Presentation software such as Proclaim can compose slides and video for the stream. Its setup guide describes a camera or webcam, microphone, optional video switcher, OBS, and at least 5 Mbps upload speed. That is the vendor’s recommendation, not a guarantee for every resolution or shared network. Proclaim’s live-stream setup guide explains its workflow.
2. Check the PC and prepare it for continuous encoding
Install the current OBS Studio release from the official OBS Project site. Review OBS’s system requirements, but treat them as baseline compatibility information, not proof that this particular computer can sustain your chosen stream. The workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Open OBS and run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers the available hardware and network conditions to suggest a starting setup.
- Begin with a simple scene and modest output settings. Avoid assuming that an unspecified older PC can run continuously; observe its encoding load and stream behavior under your real setup.
- During streaming, dedicate the PC to encoding: close unnecessary applications, prevent sleep, provide ventilation, and connect reliable power and network. These are prudent operating measures, not guarantees of uninterrupted service.

3. Build the OBS scene and verify the sound
In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add only the sources it needs: the camera or capture card, slide output if applicable, and any title or static graphic. Select the intended audio device explicitly rather than assuming OBS chose the correct microphone or mixer feed.
Check before going live
- Speak or play audio through the soundboard and watch the OBS mixer meters move.
- Listen for clear, consistent speech; make sure the feed is not clipping.
- Check that desktop audio or an open microphone is not being captured unintentionally.
- Confirm camera framing, slide legibility, and any scene transitions.
If the default devices are wrong, select the correct devices manually in OBS. For a church mixer feed, make a private or unlisted test before broadcasting publicly. OBS’s quick-start instructions also recommend checking the audio meters and testing the setup before the first live broadcast.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. A channel enabling live streaming for the first time may have to wait up to 24 hours before it is available.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not reveal it in a screen capture or public view. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- If your encoder supports encrypted ingestion, use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe encrypted RTMP streaming.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your PC can encode and your upload connection can sustain. OBS explains that bitrate must fit both the available upload speed and the platform’s limits; 60 fps can place more load on the system than 30 fps. The at-least-5-Mbps recommendation in Proclaim’s guide is not a universal guarantee, especially when other devices share the connection.

5. Test the real stream before depending on it
Do not treat a successful OBS preview as proof that viewers can see and hear the broadcast. Start with a short private or unlisted test, then inspect the actual YouTube viewing page on a second device.

- Verify the camera picture, framing, sound, slide text, and scene changes.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames and encoding overload.
- Check that the viewer-side page plays correctly, not just the encoder preview.
- Run a longer test to look for heat, sleep, power, and network problems. A short test cannot establish 24/7 reliability.
OBS recommends testing before a first live broadcast. Its requirements guidance also cautions that system capability depends on the workload; no test of your specific spare PC is implied by a compatibility checklist.
6. Decide how “nonstop” works with archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single broadcast longer than 12 hours to produce a complete replay. Decide whether the church needs one continuous viewing feed, separate replayable sermons, or both, and plan when to end or segment broadcasts accordingly.

Before launch, check the channel’s current Live Control Room workflow and confirm how reconnecting, broadcast auto-stop, and archive boundaries behave for that channel. YouTube’s encoder help establishes the under-12-hour archive rule, but does not provide a complete operating procedure for a 24/7 sermon channel.
