For a recurring Sunday service, create a separate scheduled event as needed; for one uninterrupted broadcast lasting more than 12 hours, plan for YouTube’s archive limitation and keep a local copy.
First decide what “continuous” means
A continuous church stream can mean a service that runs for its full duration, recurring weekly services, or a single always-on broadcast. OBS can send a composed program to YouTube for any of those workflows, but event scheduling and recording plans differ. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if the complete service matters, regardless of the intended archive.
Create a YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. For a recurring worship service, set up the event for the date and time your channel will use.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube, and connect the account or enter the key, depending on the option shown.
- Treat the key as a credential: YouTube says it functions like a password and address for the feed. Do not publish it, put it in a public document, or show it on screen. YouTube channel owners or managers can reset a compromised key. You can reuse a custom stream key for later events.
Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends it for encoder connections. Its Live Control Room preview is useful for checking the incoming signal before the event is public.
Configure OBS for a church service
Match the canvas and output to the source
For a conventional landscape church video, a 16:9 canvas and output are a practical starting point. In Settings → Video, set the base canvas to fit the actual camera or switcher sources, then set the output resolution to the resolution you intend to send. Avoid enlarging a lower-resolution source just to label the stream “HD.”

For a mostly fixed sanctuary shot, 30 fps is a sensible starting point if the cameras and computer handle it reliably. Use a higher frame rate only when the source has meaningful motion and the system can sustain it. YouTube supports up to 60 fps; the correct bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Set video encoding and bitrate
In Settings → Output, choose Advanced output mode if you need separate encoders for streaming and local recording. For H.264, set the rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest examples, not guarantees of stream reliability. Choose the row matching your output resolution and frame rate, then confirm your connection can sustain it:
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
If the available connection cannot sustain the selected output, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. A static sanctuary scene may not need 60 fps; a lower, stable output is preferable to a higher setting that drops frames.

Choose an encoder and configure audio
OBS can encode in software with x264 or use a supported hardware encoder. Hardware encoding moves work from the CPU to specialized GPU hardware and may have low performance impact on modern hardware. Older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. Test the encoder on the actual computer rather than assuming one option is always better.
For stereo worship audio, AAC at 128 Kbps is a platform-recommended baseline; YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. In OBS, check the selected audio device and sample rate, then listen to the actual program mix. A camera’s built-in microphone may not capture the congregation, pastor, instruments, or house mix clearly. Route an appropriate console or interface feed into OBS if the church’s signal chain allows it, and check for clipping, hum, and excessive room echo during rehearsal.

Plan the church signal path and network
Map the audio and video sources
Before building scenes, identify how the service reaches the streaming computer: camera or cameras, any video switcher or capture device, the audio console or interface, and the final program scene in OBS. Equipment needs depend on that existing signal path; not every church needs a separate capture card, mixer, or encoder. Confirm each source is visible and audible in OBS before the service.
Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions
Run an upload speed test at the streaming location and, if possible, at a time resembling the service’s network load. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says the total bitrate should not exceed upload bandwidth. For a primary and backup stream, its recommendation is to allow for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. OBS’s general connection guidance suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. If the connection varies or is shared with other users, use the more conservative result.

- Prefer a wired Ethernet connection when possible. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable.
- Account for other traffic on the church network, including staff devices and guest Wi-Fi.
- If the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen bitrate, lower the bitrate or output resolution and retest.
- A cable can help address Wi-Fi instability; it cannot fix a poor ISP connection, a heavily shared network, or an incorrectly high bitrate.
Build scenes, rehearse, and start early
- In OBS, create the scenes and sources that make up the program: for example, a camera or switcher feed, service slides, and any appropriate audio input. Confirm that transitions do not expose private information or unintended desktop content.
- Follow YouTube’s timing guidance: set up the encoder at least two hours before the scheduled event and start it at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Start OBS streaming and check the Live Control Room preview before the public start. Confirm that the correct event is receiving the feed.
- Test representative moments—not only a silent still frame—including speaking, music, slides, camera movement, and transitions. Check lip sync, sound level, picture framing, and stream health.
- Open the event’s watch page as a viewer, including on a mobile device, and verify the intended privacy and access settings.
- Start a local OBS recording and confirm that its file size is growing. Do not rely solely on YouTube’s archive for a long service.
- Assign a person to monitor the stream during the service and document who will restart OBS or network equipment if the feed fails. If the church has a backup encoder, test its failover in advance.
The OBS Project’s Overview Guide strongly recommends testing everything before the first live stream. YouTube Help also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Save the settings and scene layout separately
Use an OBS Profile for the YouTube output and stream settings, and save or export the Scene Collection separately. Profiles do not store scenes. Keep a known-good copy of each so the team can restore the encoder configuration and production layout independently if the computer or OBS installation changes.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not connect to YouTube | Incorrect or revoked stream key, wrong event, or connection issue | Confirm the selected event and key in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS. Check that OBS is using the intended YouTube connection and RTMPS where available. |
| Dropped frames or an unstable stream | Upload variation, Wi-Fi instability, shared bandwidth, or bitrate beyond the connection’s sustained capacity | Use wired Ethernet if possible, retest upload under service-like load, and reduce bitrate until the stream is stable. Check network or security software, VPN settings, drivers, and an alternate server if problems continue. |
| YouTube preview is black or missing a source | Wrong OBS scene, unavailable capture source, or incorrect event | Check the active scene and source visibility in OBS, confirm capture-device input, and ensure the event preview is receiving the intended feed before going live. |
| Viewers hear poor or missing audio | Wrong input device, muted source, bad routing, clipping, or a camera mic instead of the program mix | Check OBS audio meters and device selection, then listen to the stream preview. Verify console/interface routing and levels during rehearsal. |
| The online archive is incomplete or absent | The broadcast exceeded 12 hours or the archive otherwise did not preserve the full feed | Use the local recording as the dependable copy. YouTube Help says an over-12-hour stream may not be captured at all. |
| OBS or the computer stops streaming unexpectedly | Application, computer, power, or network interruption | Enable OBS automatic reconnect under Settings → Advanced, rehearse the recovery procedure, and assign someone to act if reconnection does not succeed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If “continuous” means an always-on YouTube channel playing pre-recorded church videos, OBS requires a computer and connection to remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free day.
