You can build a sleep-sounds stream in OBS by adding the visual and audio files as separate sources, setting each to loop, and sending the finished scene to YouTube Live. For a local setup, OBS and your computer must stay running, and you should test how the two files behave together before relying on a long broadcast. If you want playback without keeping a computer on at home, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud on YouTube.
What you need before you start
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay powered on and connected to the internet throughout the broadcast.
- A visual file, such as a still image or looping video, and a separate sleep-sounds audio file. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for source options and supported formats.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Permission to use both the sound and visuals in a live broadcast and, if you plan to keep the replay, its archived version.
This setup is for prerecorded media, not a live camera feed. A local OBS stream also depends on your computer, power, files and upload connection remaining available.
Build and test the separate sources in OBS
-
Create a scene
In OBS, create a scene for the sleep-sounds broadcast. Keeping the broadcast in its own scene makes it easier to check the intended sources before going live.
-
Add and loop the visual
In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source, select the visual file and enable its Loop option. If your visuals are a sequence of files, use VLC Video Source as a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies matching 64-bit VLC.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-
Add the sleep-sounds file separately
Add another source for the audio file rather than embedding it in the visual source. Configure its playback and looping behavior for the source you chose. OBS’s source documentation describes available controls, but it does not guarantee that independent audio and video files will stay synchronized or restart in lockstep.
-
Preview the complete scene
Start playback and listen while watching the scene. Confirm that both sources begin, continue through their loops and behave as expected after you switch scenes or restart OBS. Treat this as a necessary preflight check: source options alone do not establish that your particular pair of files will stay aligned over time.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private; reset it if you believe it has been exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
-
Check the YouTube preview and stream health
Before treating the broadcast as ready, confirm that the Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and that the audio is audible. Watch the stream-health information for warnings, then continue to monitor the feed after you go live.

Prepare a local computer for an overnight or continuous broadcast
OBS on a personal computer is a do-it-yourself encoder setup, not a hosted service. If you choose it for a long-running stream, plan for the dependencies that can stop playback:
- Prevent the computer from sleeping or automatically shutting down while OBS is broadcasting.
- Keep the media files at stable paths so OBS does not lose access to them.
- Keep the computer powered and the internet connection available; a home upload failure or power interruption can affect the stream.
- Check the YouTube feed rather than assuming that a running OBS window means viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
- Decide how you will respond if OBS, the computer or the connection stops. The cited documentation does not establish a tested 24/7 local configuration or guarantee automatic recovery for your setup.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, make a local recording backup and plan a deliberate event or restart before crossing that threshold. A restart creates a separate broadcast; do not promise viewers that one watch page will continue uninterrupted across separate broadcasts. Read YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes a broadcast (an event or video) from a stream (the audio-video feed sent to YouTube). Its example describes using the same stream for a 24/7 feed while creating another broadcast for a subset event. That example clarifies the terms; it does not establish that every creator has an automatic 24/7 session-management feature. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API broadcast guide.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can lead to a placeholder image, a warning, interruption or termination. Even when you have licensed third-party content, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Keep license records and confirm that they cover live use, relevant territories and any archived replay. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.
Choose between local OBS and cloud playout
OBS gives you control over the scene and source composition, while cloud playout can keep a prepared program running without your personal computer online. Compare the practical trade-offs before choosing:
| Consideration | Local OBS | StreamNeo cloud playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where playback runs | Your computer, using local media files. | In the cloud, from uploaded videos; your computer can be off. |
| Separate audio and video files | Add them as independent sources and verify their combined playback yourself. | StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it is not a live camera feed. Prepare the program as video before uploading. |
| Scene control | OBS gives you scene and source composition controls. | StreamNeo loops uploaded videos and playlists; the supplied product facts do not describe OBS-style scene controls or overlays. |
| Recovery | Plan how to respond to interruptions in OBS, computer power or the local connection. | Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream is included. |
| Storage and quality | Media files are stored locally; OBS source support does not specify a hosted storage allowance or service tier. | Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prepared YouTube program, StreamNeo’s three-step workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
Common problems and what to check
- The visual or audio does not loop: Check the Loop setting on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist for VLC Video Source. For the audio, confirm the selected source’s playback behavior and test the end-to-start transition.
- The sources drift, restart differently or stop together: Separate sources are configured independently, and OBS documentation does not guarantee synchronization or lockstep restarts. Test the complete scene, including after a scene switch or OBS restart, before a long broadcast.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that the stream URL and private stream key in OBS match the values in YouTube Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The Live Control Room reports a problem: Check the preview and stream-health details, then verify OBS is still sending the intended scene and that the computer and internet connection remain available.
- A live stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Review YouTube’s copyright notifications and confirm that your licenses cover live use. For licensed third-party content, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The replay is missing: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived automatically. Keep a local recording backup if a replay matters and schedule a restart before the threshold when appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a still image instead of a moving visual?
Yes. Add the image as the visual source and loop it while the separate sleep-sounds source plays.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use the same YouTube stream for a continuous feed and a separate event?
YouTube’s API guide gives an example of that arrangement, but it does not guarantee automatic 24/7 session management for every channel.
